New Eagle veterans finally honored

NEW EAGLE – Larry Anselmino began to doubt that his buddies would ever be able to raise the money needed for a new veterans memorial in their hometown.

They’d become discouraged after standing outside local restaurants for hours and taking home just a few bucks for their dream to erect a new honor roll of local veterans of New Eagle.

“I didn’t think this would ever get finished,” said Anselmino, 73, a member of the fundraising committee who never even served in the military.

“It takes money to buy this stuff,” he said while standing Tuesday before the new $78,000 granite memorial that was finally completed about two weeks ago.

The fundraising effort received its biggest boost from a $10,000 grant from Eighty Four Lumber Co., he said.

The honor roll was the dream of Jake Simoncelli who died in 2007 before seeing it come to fruition.

It needed to be completed because many names were falling off the old honor roll, Anselmino said.

“This had to be done for the veterans,” he said.

Quinet Monument Co. of Bentleyville installed the three granite panels weighing a combined 4 tons that contain the names of the veterans, said Mike Berdar of New Eagle, a consultant on the project.

Two of the panels were made from Pennsylvania black granite while the gray one was quarried in Barre, Vt. Six jet black granite benches form a semicircle in front of them.

New Eagle will dedicate the honor roll at Memorial Drive and Route 88 with a veterans service at 11 a.m. Saturday. The committee is still selling commemorative bricks for the walkway. To make a donation, call 724-258-6157.
