DUNLEVY – An off-duty state police trooper and three of his fishing pals were rescued early Thursday after their small boat capsized in the Monongahela River.

Charleroi firemen pulled the men to safety after seeing one of them waving a flashlight about 40 feet out in the Mon in Dunlevy, borough Fire Chief Robert Whiten Jr. said.

The boat flipped when one of the men went to grab for a spotlight that had fallen into the river, Whiten said.

Whiten declined to identified the trooper at the officer’s request because he said he works undercover. The other men are John Bintrim, Tom Burrie and Jeff Cermak and they live in the Washington and Waynesburg areas, Whiten said.

No one was injured when the 14-foot flat-bottom boat capsized while the men were night fishing using a spotlight and high-powered bow.

“It’s all in the drink,” Whiten said of the fishing gear.

The type of fishing for large carp and catfish is legal in the Mon, said Emil Svetahore, the state Fish and Boat Commission’s regional manager. He said he was awaiting a report on the accident.

The trooper used a waterproof cell phone to call Washington County 911 for help, Whiten said.

The men were clutching boat cushions or life preservers when they were found, he said.

He said they appeared to be embarrassed by the incident, and were examined at the scene by Mon Valley Emergency Medical Services. Belle Vernon Fire Department also assisted in the call.

There was no indication of alcohol being involved in the accident, Whiten said.

Troopers are people : 8/20/2009
I agree with not giving the troopers identity out due to his sensitive nature of work, but in the same aspect, was the fact he was a Trooper important to the story? Why were the other mens occupations left out... for example, what if one of them were a convience store clerk, or maybe roofer, would the article be headlined, "Get Go Gas Clerk and buddies get wet". I kinda doubt it would...

Why drag jobs in?

How suprising...Someone in the media ridiculing a police officer. And make no mistake, this was what was meant in the headline. Maybe if you had thought about this a little bit before writing this story you would have realized that by putting the names of the people with him in the article, you would have realized that you could be placing them in jeopardy as well. But i'm sure that your shot at the state police was not intended that way.
