Three firefighters from Fayette County suffered heat exhaustion while battling a fire that damaged two neighboring houses Wednesday in West Brownsville

The injured, whose names were not released, were taken to Uniontown and Mon Valley hospitals during the 3:10 p.m. fire on Pittsburgh Street, West Brownsville Fire Chief Todd King said.

“I think they are going to be fine. The heat. It was really, really bad,” King said.

The owner of the houses, Rich Brumley, was outdoor burning behind one that had been vacant and being demolished at the time, King said. The fire got out of control and spread to the neighboring house where Brumley lives, causing damage to a window and the siding and roof, King said.

The fire was brought under control by about 5 p.m.

Firefighters from eight departments were called to help rotate crews because of the heat and high humidity, King said.

Two of the injured are with the North Brownsville fire department, and the other belongs to the station in Hiller.
