W&J wins game, loses PAC tourney coin flip Observer-Reporter Small college basketball roundup Emily Hays set career highs with 22 points and 15 rebounds to help Washington & Jefferson clinch a share of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s basketball regular-season championship following an 83-79 victory over Thiel on Saturday. The Presidents (10-2, 18-7) however, will be the No. 3 seed for next week’s PAC tournament and will host Thiel on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Waynesburg, the No. 5 seed, will played at No. 4 Bethany while Westminster, the No. 2 seed, will host Grove City. Thomas More, Westminster and W&J were all tied atop the league standings, but the Saints won the coin-flip tiebreaker and will host the PAC Semifinals and Championship Game this weekend in Crestview Hills, Ky. Stephanie Smith drilled five three-pointers on her way to a 17-point game off the bench for W&J. Keenan Killeen and Maria Hillenbrand each added 12 points. Amber Bodrick led Thiel (3-9, 8-16) with 19 points. Jena Cook scored 16 points off the bench for the Tomcats. Nicole Valentino and Fontella Jones each added 15 and 11 points respectively. California 63, Indiana 54: Now that Dani Mills is back, things are looking up for California. Mills, playing in a reserve role, scored a game-high 21 points on 9 of 16 shooting to lead the Vulcans past Indiana 63-54 in a PSAC West contest at Hamer Hall.
Though Cal (6-3, 17-7) shot only 40 percent for the game, the Vulcans were far better than Indiana (8-2, 18-7). The Vulcans defense held the Indians to 28 percent shooting for the game. California also outrebounded Indiana 53-37. Kim Nowakowski grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for the Vulcans and also scored 12 points. Bre Dillon also added 13 points in the win. Staci Heberling led Indiana with 13 points. Katie Glaws also scored 11 points and Jahzinga Tracey added 10 points.
Waynesburg 75, Saint Vincent 58: Katie Lewandowski hit six three-pointers while Sarah Gossett connected on five for Waynesburg as the Jackets defeated Saint Vincent 75-58. While Lewandowski, who scored a game-high 23 points, and Gossett, who added 15 points and 10 rebounds, were hot from the outside, Michaelene Jones was strong inside. She scored 13 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds. Jenna Pratte also scored 10 points for Waynesburg (8-15), which snapped a five-game losing streak. Laura Klimchock led Saint Vincent with 19 points while Maura Wahl added 10 points. Men Washington & Jefferson 58, Thiel 51: Washington & Jefferson rallied from a 33-21 halftime deficit and stormed back to defeat Thiel 58-51 in a PAC contest in Greenville. Washington & Jefferson, the No. 3 seed, will host Thomas More Tuesday at 8 p.m. W&J (8-4, 12-13) held Thiel to 21 percent shooting in the second half as the Presidents outscored the Tomcats 37-18 after the break. Wahab Owolabi led W&J with 15 points and nine rebounds. Josip Lucic-Josak made all seven of his free throws in a 13-point effort. Jon Koch also scored 12 points in the victory.
Joe Herrmann led Thiel (2-10, 5-19) with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Cory Chaffee added 10 points in the loss for the Tomcats. California 67, Indiana 46: California shot 51 percent for the game, including 57 percent in the first half, and cruised to a 67-46 win over Indiana at Hamer Hall in a PSAC West contest. California (7-2, 19-5) also made 10 of 19 three-pointers, including three by John Owens who finished with 11 points. James Hairston led a balanced Cal attack with 12 points. Theron Colao added 10 points. Indiana (3-7, 6-18) made less than 33 percent of its shots in the game and was only 7 of 20 from the foul line. Gerald Brooks led Indiana with 13 points while Avery Oliver added 10. Waynesburg 82, Saint Vincent 74: Beau Wilson scored a game-high 27 points on 8 of 11 shooting as Waynesburg defeated Saint Vincent 82-74. It was the 23rd time in his career that Wilson scored 20 or more points. Leading by only one point at halftime, Waynesburg shot almost 52 percent in the second half. Jeff Nero also scored 15 points for the Jackets (12-12).
Saint Vincent had three players score in double figures, led by Billy Bains’ 24 points. Tre’sor Kalambay and Javille Brooks each added 12 points. Saint Vincent (14-11) outrebounded Waynesburg 41-32 but committed 20 turnovers.
