Carl (Bud) Middleton, 76, of Waynesburg, died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008, in his home.

JOE W. LEONARD

Air Force veteran retired from Crucible Steel

Joe W. Leonard, 78, of McMurray, died Sunday, January 20, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born March 7, 1929, in Cairo, W.Va., a son of George and Pauline Fox Leonard.

Mr. Leonard was retired as a products clerk with Crucible Steel in Midland and worked for many years as a service attendant for BP Oil Co. at Donaldsons Crossroads.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Chartiers Lodge 297 F&AM and Chartiers Lodge 97 Order of Eastern Star, both in Canonsburg, and First Presbyterian Church of Finleyville.

Surviving are three daughters, Karen Vernon of Kent, Ohio, Patricia Cornish of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Susan Mahoney of South Bend, Ind.; two stepdaughters, Jackie Buechele of McMurray and Carol Mulgrew of Calgary, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are his first wife, Shirley, who died in 1973; and his second wife, Helen, who died in 2006.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, with the Rev. Candace Cook officiating.

Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Memorial contributions may be made to Donnell House, 10 Leet Street, Washington, PA 15301; or to a charity of one's choice.

WILLIAM F. SPEELMAN JR.

Retired corrections officer, heavy equipment operator

William F. Speelman Jr., 82, of Whitehall, formerly of Rices Landing, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in his home, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Masontown, Fayette County, a son of William Sr. and Kathryn Stillwagon Speelman.

Mr. Speelman was employed by Greene County Prison, Waynesburg, as a corrections officer for seven years, before retiring in 1987. Prior to that, he was a heavy equipment operator for United Mining Workers District 4 for 37 years.

His first wife, Evelyn Tennant, is deceased.

Surviving is his wife, Michelle N. Mertz. They celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary September 22, 2007.

Also surviving are two daughters, Kathryn E. and husband Keith Shumaker of Jefferson and Sandra and husband William Dodds of Twinsburg, Ohio; two sons, William D. and wife Mary Speelman of Nemacolin and Joseph E. Speelman of Whitehall; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Simpson of Jefferson; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services information will be announced. Arrangements are being handled by Schisler Funeral Home Inc., 2119 Washington Avenue, Northampton, PA 18067. Contributions may be made to L.V. Hospice, 17th and Chew streets, Allentown, or c/o the funeral home.

Roy F. Isiminger, 90, of Dearborn, Mich., formerly of Springhill Township (Mt. Carmel), died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in Oakwood Skilled Nursing Home, Dearborn.

KATHRYN LEON CAVASINNI

McMurray resident

Kathryn Leon Cavasinni, 84, of McMurray, died Sunday, January 20, 2008.

She was the beloved wife of 62 years of Frank Cavasinni Jr.

She will be remembered by her family, including daughter Barbara Flynn (Michael) of Potomac, Md.; son David Cavasinni (Amy) of Vero Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Peter Flynn (Dara), Bethany Schreiber (Karl), Brenna Flynn and Davey and Devin Cavasinni; and great-grandson Karl Schreiber Jr., who gave her much joy since his birth three and a half months ago. She was a cherished sister of Elizabeth Baisley of Moorpark, Calif., Isaac Leon (Patricia) of Canonsburg and Mary Solomon (Michael) of West Homestead.

She will be sadly missed by her many loving nieces and nephews and her niece by marriage, Dr. Mary Cavasina.

As the highly respected matriarch of the Leon family, she was readily available to counsel and share her wisdom and generosity with family members of all ages.

Betty J. Hutter, 78, of Washington, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

She was born October 11, 1929, in Washington, a daughter of Robert and Adeline Fox Bird.

Mrs. Hutter attended Washington schools.

On August 25, 1946, she married Charles Hutter, who survives.

She owned and operated Betty's Bar for 34 years, prior to retiring in 2005, when she sold her bar to her nephew, Chuck McMasters, who renamed it Chuckie J's.

She enjoyed spending time with friends and family.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Betty "Little Face" Dyson of Washington, with whom she made her home; grandchildren Bobby Lynn (Vince) Alderson of Canonsburg and John (Andrea) Dyson of Washington; great-grandchildren Addie Christine and Andrew Vincent Alderson; and former son-in-law Dan Dyson of Ocala, Fla.

Deceased are a brother Robert S. Bird; and two sisters, Lucretia McMasters and Mildred McConnell.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 23. Lois J. Nietert, 81, of Washington, died Thursday, January 17, 2008.

She was born August 1, 1926, in Jamaica, N.Y., a daughter of Henry and Katherine Schuerger Koch.

Mrs. Nietert was a faith-filled member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bridgeville. She also was a longtime active member of South Hills Kennel Club. She was a caring guardian of pets and took a personal interest in every pet and its family. She was known as the "Nutro Lady." She also instilled her love of gardening and birding in many people and touched the lives of everyone she met.

Her husband, Richard Nietert, is deceased.

She was the loving mother of Richard A. (Cathy) Nietert of Washington, Jonathan R. (Andrea) Nietert of Nottingham Township and Heidi (Mike) Cochran of New Windsor, Md.; grandmother of Ross A. Nietert, Alexandrea N. Nietert and Cicely R. Cochran; and sister of Janet Bishop of Quakertown, Doris Schlichter of Allentown, Alan Koch of Williamsburg, Va., and Carol Temple of Albuquerque, N.M.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 26, in Zion Lutheran Church, 3197 Washington Pike, Bridgeville. Louise I. Houston, 77, of Houston, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in her home.

She was born Tuesday, November 4, 1930, in Midland, a daughter of Edward and Gladys Meredith Hoffman.

Prior to retirement, she was a nurse at Western Center.

Surviving are two daughters, Emma Houston, with whom she made her home, and Cindy Greely of McKeesport; a brother, Ronald Hoffman (Jean) of Washington; three grandchildren, Niki and Freedom Greely and Baylee Swarrow; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Charles W. Houston, who died February 5, 2007; a son, Raymond E. Greely; a daughter, Tara Swarrow; a brother, William Hoffman; and a sister, Mildred Cushey.

Michael J. Kiger, 30, of Spraggs, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, from injuries he received in an automobile accident.

He was born Friday, April 8, 1977, in Morgantown, W.Va., a son of Victor O. and Sara Whipkey Kiger of Spraggs.

Mr. Kiger had worked as an equipment operator for Toby Hoy and Billy Howard. He also worked for Wades, R.M. Manufacturing and Bamco, where his work earned the company a patent.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a daughter, Emily E. Kiger, and a son, Nathan M. Kiger, both at home; three brothers, Brian K. Kiger of Spraggs, Christopher L. Kiger of Mt. Morris and Jeffery A. and wife Christy Kiger of Copperas Cove, Texas; and his maternal grandmother, Virginia Whipkey of Mt. Morris.

Betty Irene Malie, 82, of Amwell Township, died Saturday, January 19, 2008, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, following a lengthy illness.

She was born January 21, 1925, in Washington County, a daughter of John and Laura Hunt Hayes.

For many years, she worked at Krency's Bakery.

On April 3, 1944, she married Vincenzo James Malie, who died December 26, 1987.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan (Ralph) Schmidt of Finleyville and Donna Lee (Dennis) Locy of Lone Pine, with whom she made her home; a son, Bob Hayes of Tecumseh, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Deceased are two sons, James Allen and Butch Malie.
