PATIENCE STUART HAYDEN WINTERBOTTOM

Enjoyed gardening and traveling

Patience Stuart Hayden Winterbottom, 95, died peacefully in her sleep, at home, Sunday, February 3, 2008.

She was born January 25, 1913, in Washington, a daughter of Rupert Hayden and Bess Hazel Stewart. Shortly after, the family moved to Dormont.

Mrs. Winterbottom was a graduate of Carnegie Mellon (when it was still Carnegie Tech) School of Library Science. While a student, she met Kenneth, who was a University of Pittsburgh graduate student at the time. She married Kenneth Marion Winterbottom August 17, 1935. After living in Melborne, Fla., during World War II, they returned to the Pittsburgh area. They were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair Township.

She loved gardening, even having her own flower garden at her daughter's after she and her husband moved into an apartment. She enjoyed traveling as much as her husband enjoyed the planning, and they traveled to the Caribbean and to Europe several times.

In the late 1950s, she was a volunteer reader at the Residence School for the Blind in Pittsburgh. In the 1960s and early 1970s, she was a substitute public school librarian for Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Peters Township, Keystone Oaks and Mt. Lebanon school districts.

She was an avid mall walker at South Hills Village and enjoyed being a people watcher there, enjoying a chocolate chip cookie and coffee before returning home.

She was known as "Pat the Hat," the volunteer visitor in a baseball cap and running shoes during the 1980s and 1990s at Presbyterian SeniorCare in Washington, Baptist Homes in Mt. Lebanon and Manor Care McMurray. She always said doing this was "doing her good deed for the old folks," even though most of the folks she visited were much younger than herself.

Although her name was Patience, she had little of it, except when it came to her granddaughters. She was a dedicated "Granny" and helped keep track of her granddaughters so her daughter Jill could return to school, a generous gift of herself for which her family is very grateful. If she was delighted to be a "Granny," she was ecstatic to become a "Great Granny".

Mrs. Winterbottom is survived by her daughter, Jill Stuart-Winterbottom Moncilovich; granddaughters Marion Lynn Stefansky and Martha Alana Moncilovich; and a great-grandson, Alan Peter Stefansky.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 10, in First Presbyterian Church, College and Wheeling streets, Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
