Orderly for former Woodville, Mayview state hospitals

William R. Ayres, 57, of Washington, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born November 23, 1950, in Strabane, a son of Earl M. and Virginia Foster Ayres.

He was a 1968 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School.

Mr. Ayres worked as an orderly for the former Woodville and Mayview State hospitals.

Surviving are a son, Alex Ayres of Finleyville; two sisters, Barbara Dellorso (Matthew) of Washington and Nancy Ufolla of Houston; and six brothers, Kenneth Ayres (Joanne) of Washington, Thomas Ayres (Debra) of Cleveland, Ohio, Joseph Ayres (Barbara) of Canonsburg and James Ayres (Judith), David and Howard Ayres, all of Houston.

Deceased is a sister, Kathy Ayres.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, with the Rev. Thomas D. Hamilton Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township. Rebecca J. Sawicky Bassich, 47, of Washington, formerly of Bentleyville, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Washington Hospital.

She was born March 19, 1961, in Washington, a daughter of the late John and Betty Mayle Sawicky.

Mrs. Bassich was a 1979 graduate of Bentworth High School.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Surviving are a daughter, Melanie Bassich of Washington; two sons, Robert Bassich of Bentleyville and Jason Bassich of Washington; seven grandchildren, Miranda Bassich, Gabrielia Bassich, Abigail Large, Bridget Gregg, De'Shaun Marino, Alayah Marino and Dominick Marino; a sister, Darla Beveridge and husband Robert of New Eagle; three brothers, Bruce Sawicky of Detroit, Mich., Richard Sawicky and wife Jackie of Leland, N.C., and David Sawicky of Bentleyville.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, is a son, Paul W. Bassich Jr.

THOMAS DORRINGTON CARNAHAN III

A model of courage

and humor

Thomas Dorrington Carnahan III, 52, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington, after courageously battling advanced cancer for more than six years and becoming an inspiration and role model for all who knew him.

He was born December 25, 1955, in Washington, a son of Thomas D. Carnahan II and Laurella "Lolly" Majors Carnahan of Washington.

Mr. Carnahan graduated from Trinity High School in 1973 and Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1977. At both institutions, he was a member of competitive rifle teams, achieving the rank of 18th in the nation in his senior year of college.

In 1977, he joined Fairmont Supply Co., where he served in several sales and managerial positions, most recently as director of information technology.

Throughout his numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Mr. Carnahan showed his dedication to his career by refusing to allow his illness to interfere with his achievement of excellence.

In 1978, in Elizabeth, he married Kimberly Hunt, who survives.

Among his hobbies, talents and enjoyments were spending time with his family, photography, rifle, boating, sailing, fishing, snow and water skiing, mowing the lawn, vacationing, dining out, home construction and improvement and riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The most cherished legacy he leaves behind is his example of living with courage, strength, tenacity and humor in the face of adversity.

He was a life member of Church of the Covenant, Washington, where he served as an elder.

Surviving, in addition to his parents and wife, are two daughters, Lorien Leigh Carnahan of Washington and Chelsea Dawn Carnahan (Adam) Kearns of Mt. Lebanon; twin sons Thomas Dorrington "TD" Carnahan IV and Callan Kirk Carnahan, both of Washington; a sister, Helen Carnahan (Bill) Haines of Prosperity; and many beloved family members.

He will be sadly missed by his many friends.

Deceased is a brother, G. Kirk Carnahan, who died in 1982.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19, in Church of the Covenant, 267 East Beau Street, Washington, with The Revs. Hugh Crawford and Ben Scott officiating. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Meghan E. Crawford, 27, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Marianna and Fredericktown, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008.

She was born July 24, 1980, in Brownsville, a daughter of Ronald Crawford of Fredericktown.

Surviving, in addition to her father and his longtime companion, Tracy Baltich, are a son, Isaac R. Crawford of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Hanna Ulman of Janesville, Minn.; a brother, Thomas R. Crawford; a sister, Lindsay Crawford; and a stepsister, Amanda Baltich, all of Fredericktown.

Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m., the time of services, Friday, May 16, in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, with Pastor John Thomas officiating. Interment will be private.

Elizabeth Rachel DeFelice, 95, of Cecil, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in ManorCare, Bethel Park.

She was born June 29, 1912, in Avella, a daughter of Mike and Susan Jellison Pehulic.

Mrs. DeFelice was a member of Cecil Alliance Church.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and sewing.

Surviving are sons Ronald DeFelice of Cecil and Jack (Violet) DeFelice of California state; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Milrod (Margaret) Pehulic of Cecil; two sisters, Helen Deblander of Arizona and Dororthy "Bunny" (Edward) Newton of California state; and a daughter-in-law, Janet DeFelice of Cecil.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Patsy DeFelice, who died in 2001; and two sisters, Mildred Ventresca and Irene Manardi.

Canonsburg homemaker

Betty Jean DeLanie, 90, of Canonsburg, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Canonsburg General Hospital.

She was born Sunday, May 12, 1918, in Washington, a daughter of Robert James and Jean R. Morrison Knox.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Mrs. DeLanie Methodist.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Robert G. DeLanie of Canonsburg and David L. DeLanie of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Judith Ann Sunday of Canonsburg; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Deceased is her husband, Kenneth C. DeLanie, who died in February 1997.

ERNEST HATFIELD

A generation passes

Ernest Hatfield, 88, of 850 Beech Street, Washington, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Washington Hospital, after a short illness.

He was born, along with his now deceased twin brother Earl, June 6, 1919, in Washington, sons of Albert Martin and Bessie Amos Hatfield.

On August 14, 1941, in Wellsburg, W.Va., during a double ceremony with his twin brother, he married Emily Mae Eckert, who died December 9, 1993.

After working for Pennsylvania Railroad a few years, and at his mother's advice, Mr. Hatfield took a position as caretaker for Church of the Covenant, Washington. He retired after 52 years of service with the church, where he and his wife also were members.

Mr. Hatfield was the last of his immediate family and, although he and his wife were unable to have children, they enjoyed the company of several surviving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are four brothers, Clyde, Carl, Earl and Donald Hatfield; and a sister, Goldie Clark.

ANDREW C. HETE JR.

EMT was avid hunter

and fisherman

Andrew C. Hete Jr., 26, of Bentleyville, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from injuries sustained in an apparent accident in his home.

He was born March 28, 1982, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, a son of Judith E Kuhns Reich of Canonsburg and Andrew C. Hete of Houston.

Mr. Hete was employed as an emergency medical technician with both Bentworth Ambulance Service and Rostraver-West Newton Emergency Medical Service.

He was Presbyterian.

Mr. Hete was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was a member of Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Department.

On August 7, 2008, he married Brandi Wolpink, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Christian M. Hete, and a daughter, Gabrielle F. Hete, both at home; a brother, Brian C. Hete of Canonsburg; his stepfather, Jeffery Reich of Canonsburg; maternal grandparents Vernon and Kathleen Sisco Kuhns of St. Marys; his paternal grandmother, Anna Marie Duke Hete of Houston; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Deceased is his paternal grandfather, Andrew Hete.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg (724-745-8120), where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, with the Rev. Thomas D. FRANK W. JAMISON

WWII vet owned Jamison's Auto Repair and Towing

Frank W. Jamison, 81, of McDonald, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born March 25, 1927, in McDonald, a son of Herbert and Margaret Hadden Jamison.

Mr. Jamison served during World War II in the U.S. Army.

He was the owner/operator of Jamison's Auto Repair and Towing in McDonald. Having driven a bus for Fort Cherry School District, he took students to school, many athletic events and field trips.

Mr. Jamison was a life member of McDonald Vounteer Fire Department and a member of American Legion Post 485 and McDonald Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 567.

On October 16, 1954, he married Sarah (Sally) Gearhart, who died May 31, 2002.

Surviving are two sisters, Margaret Love of McDonald and Mary Stewart of Americus, Kan.; a brother, Herbert "Russ" (LaVerne) Jamison of McDonald; a sister-in-law, Daisy Jamison of Oglesby, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a brother, James Jamison.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., the time of services, Saturday, May 17, in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, with the Rev. SWAGGARD

'67 WHS grad taught

architectural drafting

David Charles Swaggard, 58, of Lorton, Va., died April 24, 2008, from leukemia.

He was born December 11, 1949, a son of Helen E. and Frank M. Swaggard of Washington.

Mr. Swaggard was confirmed in First Lutheran Church.

He was a 1967 graduate of Washington High School and continued his education at California University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Swaggard taught architectural drafting and industrial arts in Woodbridge Senior High School while mentoring young wrestlers as their coach.

He owned is own business, D.C. Swaggard Construction, before offering his expertise to Nash Construction.

Mr. Swaggard's "footprints" can be found in northern Virginia and Maryland, many in the homes of his enduring friends.

Surviving are his loving wife, Dorothea Anne Swaggard, and their son, Travis Colton Swaggard, both of Lorton.

Also surviving are two brothers, James R. Swaggard of Palm City, Fla., and Donald R. Swaggard of Burgettstown; a sister, Carolyn J. Miller of Burgettstown; 16 nieces and nephews; and a large extended family.

He will be sadly missed by his trusted and most loyal companion, Murphy.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Ronald Swaggard.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, in Sydenstricker United Methodist Church, 8505 Hooes Road, Springfield, Va. Following the service, family and friends are invited to the Swaggard residence. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Wachovia Bank, 8998 Lorton Station Blvd., Lorton, VA 22079, (703-541-5260).
