JACQUELINE MANSELL HALVERSON

Favorite pastime was crocheting for loved ones

Jacqueline Mansell Halverson, 61, of Carmichaels, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, July 17, 2008, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg.

She was born March 22, 1947, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Carol Barger Mansell of Bethel, Ohio, and the late Ivan W. Mansell.

On July 22, 1972, she married David Marshall Halverson, who is deceased.

Mrs. Halverson was a loving and devoted daughter, mother, sister and aunt and a special grandmother. She delighted in all children and spent her life trying to better the lives of many. Although she had only one daughter, she was a "mother" to many. Her generous heart knew no boundaries. Her favorite pasttime was crocheting for her loved ones. She was a devoted Christian and member of Mather Christian Church.

Surviving are her loving daughter, Davida Romanakis and husband Paul of Waynesburg; her precious grandchildren, Zachary, Alex, Marissa and Maddie Romanakis; Tamara Hopkins of Waynesburg, whom she proudly considered to be her daughter; a stepdaughter, Janie Kay and son Jordan Kay of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Janine Mansell of Carmichaels; two brothers, Bill Mansell of Lincolnton, Ga., and Ivan Mansell of Bethel, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

She also leaves her beloved pet, Abigail.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a sister, Darlene Adams, and a precious grandson, Paul Romanakis.

Her beautiful smile and kind heart will be missed by all who loved and knew her.

Family and friends are welcome from noon to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Yoskovich Funeral Home (724-966-5500), Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, with Pastor Kenneth Jones officiating. ELIZABETH JONES MESLER LIBERATORE

Retired bookkeeper had operated Mesler's Dairy Bar

Elizabeth Jones Mesler (Beth) Liberatore, 88, formerly of Beallsville, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 26, 1920, in Vesta 6, a daughter of William and Anna Lewis Jones.

She graduated from Bentleyville High School in 1938.

In 1953, she divorced her first husband, Howard Mesler, who died in Chicago in 1987.

She operated Mesler's Dairy Bar in Bentleyville for 14 years from 1947 to 1961.

On July 2, 1961, she married George Liberatore, a barber from Beallsville.

She worked for Quality Quick for 22 years as a bookkeeper, retiring at the age of 80.

Mrs. Liberatore was since 1964 a faithful member of Beallsville Methodist Church, where she was a board member and president of Joy Bears.

Surviving are two sons, a daughter and their spouses: Howard "Buddy" Mesler and Becky of Daisytown, William (Bill) Mesler and Sandy of Washington and Frances "Sissy" Egnosak and David of Scenery Hill; grandchildren Carrie Egnosak of Fair View, Mark Mesler and his spouse, Michelle, of San Jose, Calif., and Kim Main and her spouse, Kash; great-grandchildren Sarah, Maggie, Jordan and Marcas; a brother, William Jones and his wife, Marge, of Glendale, Ariz.; a sister, Elsie Kitzmiller of Monongahela; four sisters-in-law, Loretta Jones of Levittown, Mary Gaster of Low Hill, Nellie Amato of Maugansville, Md., and Judy Liberatore of Low Hill; and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are a stepdaughter, Janice Liberatore Shamlian and her husband, Haig, of Eugene, Ore., and a former daughter-in-law, Gail Liberatore, and her children, George A. Liberatore, Donna Goozdich, Richard Liberatore and Deanna Samarin and their spouses and children.

Deceased are her husband, George Liberatore, who died July 24, 1987, and a daughter, Ruth Annette Mesler, who died on her first birthday, March 16, 1943.

Also deceased are two bothers, Francis and Leslie Jones, and a stepson, George E. Liberatore and wife Penny.

Friends will be received from noon to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Thompson-Marodi Funeral Home Inc., 809 Main Street, Bentleyville (724-239-2255), where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, with the Rev. KATHLEEN WATERS LOAR

Waynesburg woman helped with Meals on Wheels

Kathleen Waters Loar, 86, of Waynesburg, died at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Washington Hospital. She had been in her usual health, and death was due to an apparent heart attack.

She was born Monday, October 17, 1921, in Deep Valley, a daughter of John B. Waters and Agnes Fonner Waters.

Mrs. Loar was a 1940 graduate of Hundred High School.

She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Waynesburg, where she was a member of John Wesley Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women.

Mrs. Loar served as treasurer of the Sunday school for several years and as literature secretary.

She was a life member of Warrior Trail Association and AARP and was a former member of East Franklin Grange.

For 25 years, she helped with Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Loar worked several years for Deep Valley Telephone Office and Bertram and McCleese Waychoff in their home. She also worked for the school superintendant's office and G.C. Murphy in Waynesburg. Mrs. Loar then worked in the office of the Holiday Motel for Gail and Elva Scott.

On November 15, 1941, she married her husband, Paul E. Loar, who died October 26, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Judy K. and husband Clinton Scott of Baltimore, Md., and Jenny L. Loar of Waynesburg; a son, Jerry Paul and wife Mary Lou Loar of Manassas, Va.; a granddaughter, Traci Loar Seto; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Seto, twins Matthew and Noah Seto, and Kaili Seto; two stepgrandchildren, Matthew and Kaitlin Scott; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Abigail Kathleen Scott; a brother, Claude L. Waters of East Liverpool, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are three sisters, Maxine Waters Putman, Shirley Waters Stewart and Hannah Leona Waters, who died in infancy, and two brothers, Carl W. Waters and Raymond Eugene Waters, who died in infancy.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 21, with the Rev. William Parker officiating. FRANK M. SCHAFFOLD

Washington man served in U.S. Army, enjoyed Steelers

Frank M. Schaffold, 58, of Washington, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in his home.

He was born December 12, 1949, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late William G. and Patricia M. Williams Schaffold.

Mr. Schaffold was a graduate of Langley High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from January 15, 1968, until his honorable discharge as a specialist fourth class August 17, 1970. His awards include a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with two overseas bars, an Army Commendation Medal and a M-14 Sharpshooters award.

He was vice president of operations at G.W. Peoples.

Mr. Schaffold enjoyed yard work and landscaping and was an avid Steelers fan.

On February 14, 1981, he married Sharon A. Burford, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Stephen Schaffold of Los Angeles, Calif., and Matthew Schaffold of Washington, and two sisters, Carol Sutey of McKees Rocks and Mary Jane Schaffold of Pittsburgh.

Deceased is a brother, Richard G. Schaffold.

CHARLES K. THOMAS

WWII Army veteran, ironworker enjoyed hunting

Charles K. (Kelly) Thomas, 84, of Canonsburg, died Friday, July 18, 2008, in Golden Living Nursing Home in North Strabane Township.

He was born November 24, 1923, in Canonsburg, a son of Joseph and Edna Albert Thomas.

Mr. Thomas served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. During his service, he earned an American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as an ironworker by Local 3 in Pittsburgh and for many years as a teller at The Meadows Racetrack.

On March 1, 1945, he married Theola (Terry) Ripley of Pierre, S.D., who is deceased.

Mr. Thomas enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, casino gambling, going to the racetrack and traveling.

Surviving are his daughter, Victoria T. (Dr. Raymond J.) Strawn of Canonsburg; a son, Larry D. (Kathleen) Thomas of Graysville; a sister, Ruth Reda of Canonsburg; four brothers, Adam Thomas of McMurray, Malvin Thomas of Philadelphia, Anthony Thomas of Washington and Philip Thomas of Las Vegas; and a granddaughter, Dana Davis.

Deceased, in addition to his wife, are a sister, Lillian Dell, and three brothers, Samuel Thomas, Thomas Thomas and Joseph Thomas.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation and services will be private. Interment will be held in Washington Cemetery.
