WWII Army vet was
General Motors employee
Franklin Eugene Black, 82, of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.
He was born Wednesday, October 14, 1925, in Washington, a son of Franklin and Margaret Wright Black.
Mr. Black served with the U.S. Army for nine years during World War II and the Korean conflict.
He was a member of American Legion Post 253 of Canonsburg.
Prior to retirement, he worked at General Motors Bettis Plant.
Surviving are a daughter, Jacqueline Young (Douglas Sr.) of Monroe, N.C.; a son, Michael Black (Donna) of Washington; a sister, Betty Labutis of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Jeremy and Aubrey Black and Jessica Young; and several nieces and nephews.
His wife, Ellen Labutis Black, died September 5, 1987.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 1, with the Honor Guard chaplain officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg, with full military rites accorded by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 and American Legion Post 902.

Patricia Olenik Holupka, 78, of Uniontown, formerly of Nemacolin, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in LaFayette Manor, Uniontown.

Washington Steel retiree enjoyed sports
Eugene C. Iddings Sr., 76, of Scenery Hill, formerly of Marianna, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in ManorCare, McMurray.
He was born April 27, 1932, in Marianna, a son of William Ellis and Helen Marie Kelly Iddings.
Mr. Iddings was a 1950 graduate of West Beth High School and received an associate's degree in electronics from ITT Tech, Pittsburgh. He worked for Bethlehem Mine 58 as a fire boss for 11 years and was a maintenance foreman in Houston Melt Shop at Washington Steel for 30 years until his retirement in 1994.
He was a member of St. Mary and Ann's Roman Catholic Church of Marianna for more than 50 years, where he was an usher and member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of United Steel Workers Association, United Mine Workers Association and Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees.
He also enjoyed sports.
On September 29, 1951, he married Geneva Risbin, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Eugene Iddings Jr. and wife Fran of Washington; a daughter, Frances Appel of Scenery Hill; three grandchildren, David Iddings, Andrea Appel and Chaz Appel; five sisters, Lerayne Fetsko of Marianna, Marge Fellows of Joplin, Mo., Myrt Matthews of Zelienople, Kay Monica of Marianna and Audrey Knestrick of Buffalo, Minn.; four brothers, George Iddings of Marianna, Robert Iddings of Marianna, Wray Iddings of Washington and Jim Kelley of Cayucos, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son-in-law, Charles F. Appel III (Monty), who died September 3, 2007; a sister, Betty Dector; and three brothers, Clifford, Wilbert and William Iddings.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where prayer services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary and Ann's Church, Marianna, with the Rev. Paul Grunebach as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary and Ann's Cemetery, Marianna. JOSEPH KUROWSKI
Air Force sergeant retired from Bethlehem Mine 51
Joseph Kurowski, 80, of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in Jefferson Medical Center.
He was born December 27, 1927, in Bentleyville, a son of Joseph and Hennrietta Piwonar Kurowski.
Mr. Kurowski was a member of Ave Maria Roman Catholic Church and United Mine Workers Local 1197.
He retired from Bethlehem Mine 51 in Ellsworth and was a sergeant with the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Kurowski enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports all year around, including watching his granddaughters play college softball. He loved spending time with his family. It was what he lived for. Sundays were a special time for him because the whole family would come to his house and enjoy each other's company. When he wasn't with his family, he could be found tinkering in his garage.
Loved by many, Mr. Kurowski was compassionate, loving, dependable and supportive. He surely was a jack of all trades, but most of all he was a loving husband and a wonderful brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph and Terry Kurowski of Ellsworth, Robert and Jennie Kurowski of Lone Pine and Dennis Kurowski of Ellsworth; a daughter, Carrie Herilla of Coal Center; grandchildren Amanda and Brittany Kurowski, Tara Herilla, Timi and husband Harry Close, Amy and husband Matt Burt, Courtney Kurowski, Bobby and wife Jayme Kurowski, D.J. Kurowski and Alyssa Kurowski; great-grandchildren Noah Close, Jacob and Lucas Burt and Tyler Kurowski; a sister, Elizabeth Yarkosky of Washington; and a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Helen Kurowski of Eighty Four.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Ann Perchinsky Kurowski; a sister, Stella Samec; and a brother, Stanley Kurowski.

NAACP treasury secretary, Mayview Hospital volunteer
Kathleen A. Malone, 78, of Upper St. Clair, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in her home.
She was born November 28, 1929, in Meadow Lands, a daughter of George and Anna Pirozak Funka.
Mrs. Malone was treasury secretary of NAACP in Washington.
She was active in Westminster Presbyterian Church and a volunteer at Mayview State Hospital.
She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Malone; loving mother of Tim Malone and Shawn (Melissa) Malone; grandmother of Michael; and sister of David Funka.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2828 Washington Road, Peters Township (724-941-3211), where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Surviving are a son, Dennis Presky and wife Hedy of Chartiers Township; a daughter, Gaye Lynn Presky of Washington; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters Pat Rossell of Virginia, Jessie Bevan of Roscoe and Julia Washanski of Fayette City.
Deceased are her husband, Willis Presky, and a son, James Presky.

WWII Navy vet enjoyed woodworking, traveling
Harold Edward "Kans" Rodabaugh Sr., 80, of Fredericktown (Deemston Boro), died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born February 20, 1928, in Irwin, a son of Clyde and Viola Updegraf Rodabaugh.
Mr. Rodabaugh was a U.S. veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy as a Seaman 1st Class. He served aboard the USS Yancey and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal.
He worked for Beth Energy Mine 60 as a fire boss/hoist engineer for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1990.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, hunting and visiting Amish country.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Packrall and husband Thomas of Deemston Boro; a son, Harold E. Rodabaugh Jr. of Deemston Boro; two stepsons, James Godetz of Andover, Kan., and Robert Cook of Fredericktown; two stepdaughters, Sherry Hundertmark of Deemston and Leisa Huey of Layton, Utah; five grandchildren, Thomas Packrall, Marc Packrall, Tara Rodabaugh, Ashley Rodabaugh and Justin Rodabaugh; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Curtis Rodabaugh of Irwin; and a sister, Alberta Lucas of Irwin.
Deceased are his first wife, Margaret Godetz Rodabaugh, who died November 1, 1969; his second wife, Beverly Elliott Rodabaugh, who died November 22, 2000; a sister, Auretta Gellard; and two brothers, Gaylord and Dale Rodabaugh.

DORIS LEWIS SARGEANT
Executive director of Brentwood, N.Y., Public Library
Doris Lewis Sargeant, 76, of South Setauket, N.Y., died Wednesday, July 23, 2008.
She was born March 8, 1932, a daughter of Matthew Lewis Sr. and Alzenia Heath Lewis Kemp.
Mrs. Sargeant received her bachelor's of art degree in library science from University of DuBuque in 1954. She went on to earn a master's of library science and attended University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Tech.
She was the retired executive director of Brentwood, N.Y., Public Library.
Mrs. Sargeant was a member and past president of Smithtown Rotary Club, Rotary International Delegate to the United Nations, chairman for Rotary Gift of Life Program and received highest honor for contributing to Rotary Foundation.
She also was the recipient of National Community Service Award for Negro Business and Professional Women's Club.
She was the beloved wife of the late Lloyd Sargeant.
Surviving are two stepsons, Jean Rinaldo of California and Kenneth Rinaldo of Ohio; two stepdaughters, Catherine Rinaldo and Michelle Fortnam, both of California; two brothers, Matthew Lewis of North Carolina and Marvin Lewis Sr. of McDonald; a sister, Deborah Kemp of West Virginia; and seven stepgrandchildren.
Deceased is a stepson, Brian Rinaldo.
Friends and family will gather from 9:30 to 11 a.m., the time of a memorial service, Saturday, August 2, in First Baptist Church, McDonald. Her remains will be interred following the service in Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to McDonald First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 143 N. Waynesburg High School grad known for generosity
Charles William Stoneking, 70, of Washington, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township, following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 19, 1938, in Greene County, a son of William Howard and Irene Gump Stoneking.
Mr. Stoneking graduated from Waynesburg High School in 1958.
He was Protestant, always had a kind and generous heart and would, and did, give the shirt off his back to someone in need.
Surviving are his stepmother, Wanda Stoneking, who raised him; a brother, Francis (Nancy) Stoneking of Rochester, Mich.; a stepbrother, David (Helen) Cooper of Washington; a niece, Kathy (Nathan) Hilt of Cranberry Township; and a great-nephew, Aidan Hilt.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G.
