JOSEPH C. CUSHEY

Retired carpenter served in U.S. Army Medical Corps

Joseph C. Cushey, 72, of Canonsburg, formerly of Finleyville, died Sunday, August 17, 2008.

He was born March 27, 1936, in Hackett, a son of James and Mary Fine Cushey.

Mr. Cushey was retired as a carpenter with the former Don Cushey Inc. contracting company of Venetia.

He was a charter member of Nottingham Christian Center in Eighty Four and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.

Mr. Cushey enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, whom he loved very much.

Surviving are a daughter, Laurel Cushey of Canonsburg; a brother, Donald Cushey and wife Toni of Venetia; two brothers-in-law, John Hozinec of Bethel Park and Ronald Brewer and wife Maxine of Finleyville; a granddaughter, Vanessa; his former wife, Norma Brewer Cushey; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a sister, Dolores Hozinec.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 21. Interment will follow in Finleyville Cemetery. CATHRYNE GRENCI D'AMICO

Cathryne (Kaye) Grenci D'Amico, died Friday, August 15, 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, grandchildren, a brother and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Albert "Doc" D'amico, a brother and a sister.

RUTH MORRIS DEVENNEY

Washington homemaker was elder, church treasurer

Ruth Morris Devenney, 89, of Washington, died Monday, August 18, 2008, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

She was born August 20, 1918, in Washington, a son of Paul and Zelma Scott Morris.

Mrs. Devenney was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She was a former elder and church treasurer and always attended Mildred Irwin Sunday School class.

She also was a member of AARP and Washington Hospital Auxiliary, and she volunteered at Thomas Campbell Apartments.

Mrs. Devenney was a homemaker and at one time worked summers at Hazel Atlas 2.

On October 23, 1937, she married William Henry Devenney, who died June 27, 1980.

Surviving are three sons, Charles W. (Mary Ann) Devenney and John P. (Nancy) Devenney, both of Washington, and George R. (Carol) Devenney of North East; eight grandchildren, Lori Naser, Karen Thomas and Steven, John P. Jr., Jay, Jeffrey, Preston and Brent Devenney; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Deceased is a brother, Harry S. Morris.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 21, with the Rev. Susan VandeKappelle and Pastor Gary Gibson co-officiating. LEORA M. LENNOX FONNER

Homemaker worked in retail sales for many years

Leora M. "Lee" Lennox Fonner, 81, of Lincoln Borough, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008, in her home.

She was born April 1, 1927, in Washington, a daughter of Charles J. Sr. and Edythe May Hagan Moore, and was the wife of the late Abner J. Liggett and Charles Lennox.

Mrs. Fonner was a homemaker and worked in retail sales for many years. She managed Cox's-Caldwell's and also worked for Duncan Miller Glass Co., Matthews and McKeesport Hospital.

She attended Trinity High School.

Surviving are her husband, James A. Fonner; sons Jeffery L. (Laura) Liggett and Abner Jackson "Buddy" Liggett of Washington; grandchildren Jeffery D. Liggett of Vestaburg, Inza L. (Kenneth) Duchi of Allison Park and Carrie L. (Matthew) Lutz of Westerville, Ohio; five great-grandchildren; sisters Marge King of West Middletown, Jeanne Lawton of Herndon, Va., Marilyn (Louis) Beattie of Ventura, Calif., and Sue (Larry) Pegram of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, C. James (Karen) Moore of Sweetwater, Texas; sisters-in-law Sue Moore of Valencia, Calif., and Jane (Jack) Lawson of McKeesport; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a brother, Donald Moore, who died August 2, 1985.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 30, in Grove United Presbyterian Church, West Middletown. Memorial contributions may be made to Grove United Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Gilbert Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 6028 Smithfield Street, Boston, Elizabeth Township.

PETER NOVICK

WWII Army vet, self-employed barber

Peter Novick, 89, of Brownsville, Centerville Borough, died Friday, August 15, 2008.

He was born March 20, 1919, in Creighton, a son of Harry and Rose Novick.

Mr. Novick was a 1937 graduate of Springdale High School and attended New Kensington School of Business.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Novick worked as a Social Security field manager at the Washington office for 10 years and had been a self-employed barber. He owned and operated Novick's Barber Shop in California for more than 50 years.

He enjoyed writing and had been an amateur boxer in his youth.

On June 20, 1940, he married Frances Fick, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Dr. Peter Novick and wife Carolyn of Santa Barbara, Calif.; three grandchildren, Todd Novick and wife Jeanine, Chad Novick and Alexy Novick; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Pauline Peckney and Mary Wasiloff, and seven brothers, John, George, Steve, Walter, Sam, Paul and James Novick.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, to proceed to a chapel service at 11 a.m. in Deer Creek Cemetery, Harmer Township, with Pastor Bob Ezatoff officiating. VERNA KATHLEEN FRYE VITTEK

Longtime Claysville resident loved music

Verna Kathleen Frye Vittek, 90, a former longtime resident of Claysville and a descendant of Western Pennsylvania's earliest settlers, died Friday, August 15, 2008, in her home in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

She was born the eldest daughter of Gilbert and Hazel Sanders Frye in a log cabin that her father built in West Finley. The family later moved to a large farm in Claysville. Her ancestors included Revolutionary War soldiers, and a great-grandmother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian.

Mrs. Vittek came from a family of 11 children, two having died in infancy.

She became the first person in her family to earn a high school diploma.

In 1934, at age 16, she graduated at the top of her class from Claysville High School.

Mrs. Vittek remembered watching President Franklin D. Roosevelt pass through Claysville when she was a teenager.

She loved music and traveled extensively, including parts of Europe, Hawaii and Alaska.

Her husband, Robert, died in 1971.

Surviving are sons James of Chagrin Falls, Robert (Rita) of Escondido, Calif., and Ralph (Susan) of Carlsbad, Calif.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Everett Frye of Claysville; sisters Geraldine (Clarence) Calvert of Waynesburg and Dolly Grimes of Claysville; and many nieces and nephews in the Claysville and Washington areas.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday in Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, 219 Main Street, Claysville. Private burial services will follow in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Chagrin Falls.
