Beverly Jean Harvey Berkhofer

Former Washington resident

Beverly Jean Harvey Berkhofer of Saddle Brook, N.J., passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

She was a 1961 graduate of Washington High School.

Mrs. Berkhofer was a past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2973, Ladies Auxiliary, in Suffern, N.Y.

She was the beloved wife of Robert Berkhofer; devoted mother of Bridget Kelley and Barbra Maglio; loving grandmother of Daniel and Miranda Maglio; cherished daughter of Ruth Harvey of Washington and the late John Harvey; dear sister of Joanna Pagliarulo (sisters forever); and the coolest aunt whom Steven Pagliarulo and Kimberly Lindner could ever have hoped for. She is always on their minds and forever in their hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, October 23, in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Meadow Lands, with Father John O'Shea as celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Alexander Wilson Hamilton

U.S. Navy veteran

Alexander Wilson Hamilton, 82, of Washington, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in his home. He had been ill since June 2009.

He was born February 6, 1927, in Hopewell Township, a son of Robert and Mabel Wilson Hamilton.

Mr. Hamilton enlisted in the U.S. Navy on February 2, 1945. For his service, he received the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged July 26, 1946.

On September 13, 1950, he re-enlisted in the Navy, receiving the Korean Service Medal, Japanese Occupation Medal, China Service Medal and United Nations Medal. He was honorably discharged April 25, 1952.

Mr. Hamilton attended the reunions held for World War II and Korean conflict veterans.

A 1945 graduate of Trinity High School, he also attended Milwaukee Engineering School.

Mr. Hamilton worked at Washington Steel, as an electrician, from 1959 until 1992.

He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion, Sunset Lodge 623, F&AM, and Washington-Greene County Car Caravan and served as president of Tall Cedars Motor Unit.

At the time of his death, Mr. Hamilton was the chairman of supervisors in Hopewell Township and served as secretary of Upper Buffalo Cemetery Association.

He was a member of Third United Presbyterian Church and enjoyed traveling and farming.

On September 15, 1956, he married Ruth Cundall, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Matthew A. Hamilton of Philadelphia; a daughter, Deborah Chapell of Pittsburgh; a brother, Robert (Phyllis) Hamilton of Claysville; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hamilton; a niece; and several nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Eleanor Moss, and a brother, Jay Hamilton.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 23. Burial will follow in Upper Buffalo Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Cardiovascular Institute at Allegheny General Hospital, 320 East North Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Thelma Politan Hundagen, 96, of Beech Bottom, W.Va., died Sunday, October 18, 2009.

Surviving are four sisters, Rosella Finney, Marie Polly, Lucille Tomsic and Caroline D'Orazio, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Politan.

Charlotte A. Kanya

Clerk at Veterans Administration hospital

Charlotte A. Kanya, 50, of Washington, died unexpectedly Monday, October 19, 2009.

She was born July 7, 1959, in Washington, a daughter of Patrick Shannon of Mt. Lebanon and the late Donna Zecker Yescavage, and was raised by her late grandparents, Charles and Wilma Amon Zecker.

Ms. Kanya graduated from Trinity High School and attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for two years.

She worked as a clerk at Brecksville, Ohio, Veterans Administration hospital for 19 years.

Ms. Kanya was Catholic.

Surviving are a half sister, Lisa Fay of Frederick, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visitation or service. Private burial was held in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. William G. Veronica F. Nestor

Member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church

Veronica F. Nestor, 87, of Muse, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, in her home.

She was born March 24, 1922, in Southview, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Tomazin Steiner.

Mrs. Nestor lived the past 85 years in Muse and was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church and its Christian Mothers and Guild.

She was a graduate of Cecil High School and had been employed in the decorating department at the former Canonsburg Pottery Co.

Mrs. Nestor was a founding member of Muse Volunteer Fire Department, a member of both Muse and Canonsburg Senior Citizens and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 861 and was a 60-year member of SNPJ Lodge 138 in Strabane.

On July 20, 1946, she married William H. Nestor, who died October 25, 1994.

Mrs. Nestor was the last of her immediate family.

Surviving are her son, William (Roxanne) Nestor; two grandchildren, Adina and Jerrod Nestor; a great-grandson, Caleb Nestor; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a son, Frank R. Nestor; two sisters, Agnes Pedeski and Matilda Heckathorne; two brothers, Robert and Fred Steiner; and her dear niece, Mary Lou Pedeski.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg (724-745-8120), where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 24. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.

Gerald Squires

WWII veteran was apple farmer

Gerald (Jerry) Squires, 85, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Monday, October 19, 2009, in his home.

He was born April 21, 1924, in Bentleyville, a son of Roy and Anna Squires, the third of four children (Katherine, Lloyd and Phyllis).

In 1942, he interrupted his education to join the U.S. Army Air Forces and serve in World War II. While based in England, he served as a ball turret gunner on B-17 and B-24 bombers and flew many missions over Europe. After returning home, he finished school and soon married Elizabeth (Libby) Sphar in Brownsville.

Mr. Squires held a variety of jobs over the years, including working for the U.S. Forest Service. He was always happy; he moved to Council, Idaho, in 1970, to become an apple grower. His business was the last commercial orchard in the once famous apple-growing valley. He had recently said that relocating to Idaho was the best move he made.

He retired in 1988 and later moved to Boise, Idaho.

Mr. Squires enjoyed spending time with family, working on household projects, travel and walking on the Boise Greenbelt with his wife, Libby.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Libby, and three children, Janet (Ron) Meyer of Indian Valley, Idaho, Rob (Connie) Squires of Soda Springs, Idaho, and Leigh Anne (Kaz) Kazimir of Boise. He will also be missed by his six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 23, in Bowman Funeral Parlor, Boise, with a committal ceremony to follow at 3 p.m. in Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. Donations may be made in his name to American Heart Association, 270 South Orchard, Suite B, Boise, ID 83705.
