Charles E. Burke

WWII vet was Consolidation Coal Co. retiree

Charles E. Burke, 89, of Mt. Morris, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009, in MonGeneral Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

He was born Saturday, October 4, 1919, in Blacksville, W.Va., a son of James Burke and Mamie Patterson Burke.

Mr. Burke lived most of his life in Mt. Morris.

He was a veteran, having served with the U. S. Navy on the USS West Virginia during World War II.

Mr. Burke was a retired coal miner, having worked at Consolidation Coal Co. Humphrey 7 Mine in Mt. Morris.

On Monday, January 5, 1948, he married Betty Stapinsky, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John C. and Rosa Burke of Morgantown and Harold E. (Chuckie) and Louise Burke of Vienna, W.Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wilma Farace of Mt. Morris and Anna Ruth Moore of Blacksville; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, Owner/Director, 324 Mt. Morris Road, Mt. Morris, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, with the Rev. Fred Tomlinson officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Graveside military rites will be accorded by James T. Maxon American Legion Post 992 of Mt. Morris. Information is available online at www.milliken-throckmorton fh.com.
