Stephen Lendway
Stephen Lendway, 83, of Finleyville, Nottingham Township, formerly of Donora, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 2, 2009, in the emergency room of Mon Valley Hospital.
He was born August 7, 1925, in Nottingham Township, a son of Stephen and Susan Benzo Lendway.
Mr. Lendway was owner/operator of Lendway and Sons Heating and Air Conditioning and Modern Automatic Systems, both located in Donora, for more than 62 years. The business now is run by his son, David, and grandsons Brandon and David Michael.
He attended Venetia School and Trinity High School.
Mr. Lendway was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Donora and was past president of Donora Chamber of Commerce and Donora Lions Club. A member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1409 Monongahela, James C. Ford Post 949 American Legion, Carroll Township, he also was a life member of Disabled War Veterans and a member of Military Order of Purple Heart, Mon Valley Leathernecks and Slovak Club in Monongahela.
He was a U.S. Marine having served in World War II. He earned one battle star for North Africa and three battle stars for Asiatic Pacific. He served in the 2nd Marine Regiment and the 22nd Regiment. Mr Lendway was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Presidential Unit Citation with a star, the Navy and Marine Corps medals, and the Bronze star four- year Good Conduct Victory Medal.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Louise S. "Lola" Dzik Lendway; two sons, Stephen J. Lendway Jr. (Shirley) of Roanoke, Va., and David P. Lendway of Finleyville; five grandchildren, David M., Brandon P., Spencer, Paul and Leslie R. Lendway; three great-grandchildren, Josh, Michael and Haley Lendway; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, John Bostek and Paul Fabian; and two sisters, Dolores Lendway and Helen Banansky.
Mr. Lendway was the last of his immediate family.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in James A. Rabe Funeral Home Inc., 701 Thompson Avenue, Donora, where prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Valley Parish St. Dominic Church with the Rev. Pierre Falkenhan as celebrant. Interment with full military honors will follow in Monongahela Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Lendway's name to DAV. Family and friends may view the obituary and offer online condolences at www.rabefuneralhome.com. The Mon Valley Leathernecks will conduct services in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
