Richard Patrick Brady
WWII veteran was member of American Legion, Elks
Richard Patrick (Dick) Brady, 83, of Monongahela, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Greenery Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.
He was born April 24, 1925, in New Eagle, a son of Alexander and Edna Musante Brady.
Mr. Brady attended Transfiguration Grade School and was a graduate of Monongahela High School Class of 1942 and Duquesne University. He later attended Duquesne Law School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the European Theater during World War II, with the 26th Division and was a recipient of two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, Croix de Guerre and four Battle Stars for campaigns.
Mr. Brady formerly was employed as superintendent of production and planning at Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel in Monessen and Allenport. He then became chief county clerk for one term and retired as director of domestic relations, both in Washington County.
His memberships include Transfiguration Church in Monongahela, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus Bishop Phelan, where he was past grand knight of the 4th degree, Monongahela Elks Lodge 455, where he was past exhaulted ruler, American Legion Frank Downer Post 302 in Monongahela and senior program officer of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 1409.
He was the beloved husband of Mary Spernak Brady, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage July 14, 2008; devoted father of Michael Brady of Harrisburg; and grandfather of Alan Flanders of Florida and Andrea Flanders of Texas.
Also surviving are a special niece, Mary Ann Toth of Belle Vernon; a brother, William and wife Doreen Brady of New Eagle; two sisters, Mary Brady of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kathleen Bordini of Monongahela; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, deceased are a daughter, Patricia Flanders; a brother, Paul Brady; and three sisters, Patricia Daley, Edna DeSimone and Rita Brady.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 10, in Transfiguration Church, with the Rev. George Chortos, pastor, as celebrant. Committal service and interment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monongahela, at the convenience of the family. Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Member of South Run Baptist Church
Mary Snyder Coutry of Pittsburgh, formerly of Springfield, Va., after 92 wonderful years on Earth, made her journey to heaven Wednesday, January 7, 2009.
She was born October 31, 1916, a daughter of Elmer Clinton and Lulu Daniels Snyder.
Mrs. Coutry was a life member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, both of Springfield. She was a member of South Run Baptist Church of Springfield.
She shared 25 years of her beloved husband Bill’s life and love before his passing in 1979.
Mrs. Coutry will be greatly missed by her loving sisters, Betty Hudson of Carmichaels and Edna Sluganski of Pittsburgh, and a sister-in-law, Betty L. Snyder of Fairborn, Ohio.
Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, Mildred Donato and husband Angelo, Carol Modrick, Audrey Coppler, Betty Phillips and husband Thurman, James Snyder and wife Heidi, Patsy Maleski and husband Joseph, Sandra Gwaltney, David Hudson and wife Denise and Randy Sluganski and wife Sandra; and a stepson, Gary Coutry and wife Joan of Florida.
In addition to her parents and husband, deceased are brothers and sisters Edward Snyder, Ethel Johnson, Ada Reagan, James Snyder, Elmer Snyder Jr., Della Sluganski and John William Snyder.

WWII vet owned Bronks Family Shoe store
Michael A. Elias, 85, of Trafford, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville.
He was born January 12, 1923, in Washington, a son of Abraham and Anna Moses Elias.
Mr. Elias was retired from Royer’s Department Store as a general manager for several stores, and he was owner and operator of the former Bronks Family Shoe Store in Irwin.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army Air Forces.
Surviving are his children, Michael G. Elias (Chrissie) and Michelle Anne Elias, both of Level Green, Terry Hamburger (George) of Mt. Lebanon and Pamela Sue Elias of Bethel Park; eight grandchildren, George Michael, Lauren, Alaina, Marissa, Jaron, Michael, Billy and Brianna; and a great-grandson, Matthew.
In addition to his parents, deceased are a son, Marty A. Elias; two brothers, Nasime (Bill) and James Elias; and three sisters, Sarah Higginbotham, Mary Polasky and Lois Ann McBride.

Mary Grace Myriam Flynn
Sister of Mount de Chantal
Sister Mary Grace Myriam Flynn, 81, VHM, member of Mount de Chantal community of Sisters of the Visitation since 1945, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Mount de Chantal, Wheeling, W.Va.
She was born in Wheeling, a daughter of James and Frances Gilligan Flynn.
A 1944 graduate of Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy, she received a bachelor’s degree in education from Duquesne University, a master’s degree in library science from The Catholic University of America and Montessori teacher certification from Michigan Montessori School.
Her service at Mount de Chantal included librarian and teacher of English, Latin and religion in the academy, teacher and director in the Mount Montessori program, dormitory counselor, member of the academy board of trustees from 1975 to 2005 and directress of the formation program for the community of Visitation Sisters. Between 1974 and 2000, she was elected and served six terms of three years as superior of the community. In service to the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, she was a vice-president of the Diocesan Council of Sisters and a member of numerous committees. From 1984 to 1996, she was a councilor of Second Federation of the Visitation Order in the United States. This federation includes communities and schools in the Dioceses of Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Mo., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., Brooklyn, N.Y., and Wheeling-Charleston.
With Sister Mary Loyola Lynn, VHM, Sister Flynn compiled an index published in 1968 of works in English by St. Francis de Sales, co-founder of the Visitation Order. In 2007, she prepared a compilation entitled “Select Salesian Subjects,” published by De Sales Resources and Ministries of Stella Niagara, N.Y.
Surviving are a niece, Mimi Griffith, and three nephews, John, James and Andrew Griffith and their families.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are a sister, Lenore Flynn Griffith.
Friends will be received from noon to 6 p.m. Friday in Mount de Chantal chapel, 410 Washington Avenue, Wheeling, and from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the time of services, Saturday, January 10, with Father Walter Buckius, SJ, as main celebrant. George R. Henderson
Weirton Steel retiree was WWII veteran
George R. Henderson, 85, formerly of Weirton, W.Va., died Sunday, January 4, 2009, surrounded by his family, in his home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., where he retired after 32 years of service at Weirton Steel, Division of National Steel.
He was born September 15, 1923, in Washington, a son of Joseph and Edith Drury Henderson, formerly of South Yorkshire, England.
He attended Pancake School and was a 1941 Washington High School graduate.
Mr. Henderson was a veteran of World War II, having served as an auto mechanic and sergeant, with the 58th Troop Carrier Squadron, 375th Troop Carrier Group. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with six bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Henderson joined Weirton Steel in 1949 as an electrician. He retired in 1981 as a foreman of the blast furnaces electrical department.
He was a member of Cove United Presbyterian Church in Weirton, where he was a ruling elder and served as a deacon until his retirement. He also was a member of Pleasant Valley Country Club.
He married Mary Louise Engle, formerly of Washington and Weirton, and now residing in Sun Lakes. The couple recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Mr. Henderson enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and reading. A “Johnny-Bull” who was deeply proud of his English heritage, he was a devoted family man who could fix anything. His many notes and reminders will continue to guide his family for years to come. Although a man of few words, he was a consummate storyteller whose tales enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
In addition to his wife, surviving are three daughters, Carol Henderson and Denise Tucker of Chandler, Ariz., and Lori (John) Mazzone of Newark, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are his parents, Joseph and Edith Drury Henderson, and a sister, Mrs. Robert Ruth Bennett of Weirton.

Valentino Mattozzi Jr., 57, of Monongahela, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Mon Valley Hospital.
He was born February 27, 1951, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Valentino and Helen Kunkle Mattozzi.
Mr. Mattozzi was retired from Corning Glass.
A Christian, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Finney Mattozzi; a daughter, Jennifer and husband Buster Suppo of Donora; a son, Jonathan Mattozzi of Monongahela; two granddaughters, Lauren and Rebecca Suppo; a sister, Nancy and husband Eugene Dolfi of Pittsburgh; a brother, Elmer and wife Michelle Mattozzi of Monessen; a mother-in-law, Vi Finney of Monessen; a sister-in-law, Janet and husband Richard Merz of Rochester, N.Y.; seven nieces and nephews, Rosalind King-Miller, Michelle Fino, Jessica Lauren Mattozzi, Adam John Mattozzi, Gabrielle Elizabeth Mattozzi, Brant Nystrom and Laurie Nystrom; and great-nephew Brandon King.
He also leaves his faithful dog, “Peanuts.”

Barbara Pauline (Babs) McKibben Nicholas, 73, of Washington, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington. She was a two-time survivor of breast cancer.
She was born August 20, 1935, in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of Harry Kibe “Sam” Ullom and Agnes Pauline Nelson Ullom.
Mrs. Nicholas attended Chartiers schools.
She was a homemaker but had worked as a waitress and short-order cook in local area restaurants.
Mrs. Nicholas loved her dog, Lace.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur C. (Shana) Nicholas of Summerville, S.C., and Robert “Kibe” (Kimberly) Nicholas of Washington; three daughters, Diana (Dan) Kelley of Washington, Barbara K. Kurt Stopperich, 57, of Canonsburg, formerly of West Walnut Street, Washington, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at The Greenery, Canonsburg, following a brief illness.
He was born May 18, 1951, in Canonsburg, a son of Roland W. and Annita Ruth Gibbons Stopperich.
Mr. Stopperich attended Trinity Episcopal Church.
He was a graduate of Trinity High School Class of 1969.
He was employed at one time as a radiator repairman, a mechanic and a truck driver.
He enjoyed working on cars with his mechanical background, going for his daily walks and reading.
Surviving are a son, Kurt Daniel (fiancée Danielle) Stopperich Jr. of Canonsburg; a brother, Roland W. (Carole) Stopperich Jr. of Danville, Ind.; a nephew, Dr. David (Deanna) Stopperich of Avon, Ind.; two great-nieces, Emma and Chloe Stopperich of Avon; and three grandchildren.
Deceased is a sister, Betty Sue Stopperich.

Ronald A. “Butch” Wilson, 65, of Claysville, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, in Townview Nursing Home, Canonsburg.
He was born November 4, 1943, in Washington, a son of the late George W. and Olive Arthur Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a graduate of Chartiers High School.
He was employed by McGraw Edison Co. in Canonsburg and more recently as a driver for Taylorstown Auto Auction.
Mr. Wilson was a member of Meadow Lands United Methodist Church.
He also was a member of Fraternal Order of the Bears in Meadow Lands, Taylorstown American Legion and Moose Lodge in Washington. He enjoyed all sports, especially fishing, dartball, bowling and pool, and he loved dancing.
Surviving are a sister, Carole J. Giacometti of Washington; a brother, William D. Wilson of Arden; and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves his friend and companion, Ellen Beahm.
Deceased is a brother, James O. Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, in Meadow Lands United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, Washington.

Mary Grace Myriam Flynn
Sister of Mount de Chantal
Sister Mary Grace Myriam Flynn, 81, VHM, member of Mount de Chantal community of Sisters of the Visitation since 1945, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Mount de Chantal, Wheeling, W.Va.
She was born in Wheeling, a daughter of James and Frances Gilligan Flynn.
A 1944 graduate of Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy, she received a bachelor’s degree in education from Duquesne University, a master’s degree in library science from The Catholic University of America and Montessori teacher certification from Michigan Montessori School.
Her service at Mount de Chantal included librarian and teacher of English, Latin and religion in the academy, teacher and director in the Mount Montessori program, dormitory counselor, member of the academy board of trustees from 1975 to 2005 and directress of the formation program for the community of Visitation Sisters. Between 1974 and 2000, she was elected and served six terms of three years as superior of the community. In service to the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, she was a vice-president of the Diocesan Council of Sisters and a member of numerous committees. From 1984 to 1996, she was a councilor of Second Federation of the Visitation Order in the United States. This federation includes communities and schools in the Dioceses of Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Mo., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., Brooklyn, N.Y., and Wheeling-Charleston.
With Sister Mary Loyola Lynn, VHM, Sister Flynn compiled an index published in 1968 of works in English by St. Francis de Sales, co-founder of the Visitation Order. In 2007, she prepared a compilation entitled “Select Salesian Subjects,” published by De Sales Resources and Ministries of Stella Niagara, N.Y.
Surviving are a niece, Mimi Griffith, and three nephews, John, James and Andrew Griffith and their families.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are a sister, Lenore Flynn Griffith.
Friends will be received from noon to 6 p.m. Friday in Mount de Chantal chapel, 410 Washington Avenue, Wheeling, and from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the time of services, Saturday, January 10, with Father Walter Buckius, SJ, as main celebrant. George R. Henderson
Weirton Steel retiree was WWII veteran
George R. Henderson, 85, formerly of Weirton, W.Va., died Sunday, January 4, 2009, surrounded by his family, in his home in Sun Lakes, Ariz., where he retired after 32 years of service at Weirton Steel, Division of National Steel.
He was born September 15, 1923, in Washington, a son of Joseph and Edith Drury Henderson, formerly of South Yorkshire, England.
He attended Pancake School and was a 1941 Washington High School graduate.
Mr. Henderson was a veteran of World War II, having served as an auto mechanic and sergeant, with the 58th Troop Carrier Squadron, 375th Troop Carrier Group. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with six bronze stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Henderson joined Weirton Steel in 1949 as an electrician. He retired in 1981 as a foreman of the blast furnaces electrical department.
He was a member of Cove United Presbyterian Church in Weirton, where he was a ruling elder and served as a deacon until his retirement. He also was a member of Pleasant Valley Country Club.
He married Mary Louise Engle, formerly of Washington and Weirton, and now residing in Sun Lakes. The couple recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Mr. Henderson enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and reading. A “Johnny-Bull” who was deeply proud of his English heritage, he was a devoted family man who could fix anything. His many notes and reminders will continue to guide his family for years to come. Although a man of few words, he was a consummate storyteller whose tales enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be sadly missed.
In addition to his wife, surviving are three daughters, Carol Henderson and Denise Tucker of Chandler, Ariz., and Lori (John) Mazzone of Newark, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Deceased are his parents, Joseph and Edith Drury Henderson, and a sister, Mrs. Robert Ruth Bennett of Weirton.

Valentino Mattozzi Jr., 57, of Monongahela, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Mon Valley Hospital.
He was born February 27, 1951, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Valentino and Helen Kunkle Mattozzi.
Mr. Mattozzi was retired from Corning Glass.
A Christian, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Finney Mattozzi; a daughter, Jennifer and husband Buster Suppo of Donora; a son, Jonathan Mattozzi of Monongahela; two granddaughters, Lauren and Rebecca Suppo; a sister, Nancy and husband Eugene Dolfi of Pittsburgh; a brother, Elmer and wife Michelle Mattozzi of Monessen; a mother-in-law, Vi Finney of Monessen; a sister-in-law, Janet and husband Richard Merz of Rochester, N.Y.; seven nieces and nephews, Rosalind King-Miller, Michelle Fino, Jessica Lauren Mattozzi, Adam John Mattozzi, Gabrielle Elizabeth Mattozzi, Brant Nystrom and Laurie Nystrom; and great-nephew Brandon King.
He also leaves his faithful dog, “Peanuts.”

Barbara Pauline (Babs) McKibben Nicholas, 73, of Washington, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington. She was a two-time survivor of breast cancer.
She was born August 20, 1935, in Zanesville, Ohio, a daughter of Harry Kibe “Sam” Ullom and Agnes Pauline Nelson Ullom.
Mrs. Nicholas attended Chartiers schools.
She was a homemaker but had worked as a waitress and short-order cook in local area restaurants.
Mrs. Nicholas loved her dog, Lace.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur C. (Shana) Nicholas of Summerville, S.C., and Robert “Kibe” (Kimberly) Nicholas of Washington; three daughters, Diana (Dan) Kelley of Washington, Barbara K. Nicholas of Wilkinsburg and Trudi Toward of Washington; two sisters, Dixie Lee (D.J. “Sonny”) Avolia of Hickory and Catherine “Kate” (Ron) Deyell of Washington; nine grandchildren, Jeremiah Crowe, Ashley and Trudi Nicholas, Carl Robert and Daniel “Scooter” Kelley, Kibey and Brittney Nicholas and Brook and Bobbi Toward; and three great-grandchildren, Natalee Nichole, Chance Austin and Hayden Thomas.

She was born October 2, 1913, in Moon Run, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Vehar Kaucic.
Mrs. Pelan was a member of St. Genevieve Roman Catholic Church of Canonsburg and SNPJ Lodge.
Surviving are a son, Joseph A. Pelan III (Linda) of South Park; two grandchildren, Lisa Mattocks (Ryan) and Brian Pelan; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Lucas and Ethan Mattocks; two sisters-in-law, Frances Pollack of Avella and Rose Wrubleski of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, Joseph A. Pelan Jr.; four brothers, Jerry, Charles, Frank and August Kaucic; and four sisters, Jennie Rupnik, Mary Celin, Dorothy Pavlik and Josephine Omaits.

Kurt Stopperich, 57, of Canonsburg, formerly of West Walnut Street, Washington, died Sunday, January 4, 2009, at The Greenery, Canonsburg, following a brief illness.
He was born May 18, 1951, in Canonsburg, a son of Roland W. and Annita Ruth Gibbons Stopperich.
Mr. Stopperich attended Trinity Episcopal Church.
He was a graduate of Trinity High School Class of 1969.
He was employed at one time as a radiator repairman, a mechanic and a truck driver.
He enjoyed working on cars with his mechanical background, going for his daily walks and reading.
Surviving are a son, Kurt Daniel (fiancée Danielle) Stopperich Jr. of Canonsburg; a brother, Roland W. (Carole) Stopperich Jr. of Danville, Ind.; a nephew, Dr. David (Deanna) Stopperich of Avon, Ind.; two great-nieces, Emma and Chloe Stopperich of Avon; and three grandchildren.
Deceased is a sister, Betty Sue Stopperich.

Ronald A. “Butch” Wilson, 65, of Claysville, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009, in Townview Nursing Home, Canonsburg.
He was born November 4, 1943, in Washington, a son of the late George W. and Olive Arthur Wilson.
Mr. Wilson was a graduate of Chartiers High School.
He was employed by McGraw Edison Co. in Canonsburg and more recently as a driver for Taylorstown Auto Auction.
Mr. Wilson was a member of Meadow Lands United Methodist Church.
He also was a member of Fraternal Order of the Bears in Meadow Lands, Taylorstown American Legion and Moose Lodge in Washington. He enjoyed all sports, especially fishing, dartball, bowling and pool, and he loved dancing.
Surviving are a sister, Carole J. Giacometti of Washington; a brother, William D. Wilson of Arden; and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves his friend and companion, Ellen Beahm.
Deceased is a brother, James O. Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, in Meadow Lands United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Dale D. DeAngelo Funeral Home, Washington.
