Services for Kersey R. (Danny) Dever, formerly of Washington, who died December 20, 2008, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, in Washington Cemetery. Everyone is asked to meet at the new entrance of the cemetery at 1:45 p.m.

Cecelia F. Drabeck

Owned Drabeck’s Motor Hotel

Cecelia F. Drabeck, of Washington died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born February 4, 1918, in Treveskyn, a daughter of William and Josephine Grusewski Ostrowski.

Mrs. Drabeck was a graduate of Carnegie High School.

During World War II, she worked as a welder for Dravo in Pittsburgh. She was co-owner with her husband, Fredrick, of Drabeck Filling Station and Diane’s Family Dinner, where she did most of the cooking. She later owned Drabeck’s Motor Hotel on Route 19.

Mrs. Drabeck was a member of St. Patrick Church and Canonsburg Senior Citizens.

She loved to dance, especially polkas, and also loved singing and playing cards. She enjoyed going to The Meadows Racetrack.

On April 16, 1934, she married Fredrick J. Drabeck, who died November 7, 1983.

Surviving are two sons, Fred J. (LaVerna) Drabeck Jr. of Washington and Gerald W. Drabeck of Springfield, Tenn.; two daughters, Dianna C. (Thomas) Yurkovich of Kent, Ohio, and Wanita K. (Charles) Kraus of Aliquippa; seven grandchildren, Fred III, Debbie, Denis, Craig, Gerald Jr., Daniel and Kaitlyn; five great-grandchildren, Emily, Brianna, Ty, Jerry III and Cody; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her immediate family.

Deceased are a sister, Julia Hundenski, and a brother, Stanley Ostrowski.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, 724-745-8120, where a blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 12, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. Entombment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.

Norma A. Hainer

Norma A. Hainer, 93, of West Bethlehem Township, died Friday, January 9, 2009, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

Wilbert Irving Hull

34-year Brockway moulder was avid fisherman

Wilbert Irving Hull, 78, of Washington, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Kindred Care, Oakdale.

He was born August 28, 1930, in Waynesburg, a son of Earl W. and Mildred Hillberry Hull.

Mr. Hull was a hot-end moulder at Brockway Glass for 34 years. He also had worked in security and as a driver at Holiday Inn on Racetrack Road for 14 years and as an auxiliary police officer in Washington.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed woodworking, reading, gardening and helping at his son’s shoe repair store. He also loved to travel and spend time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Hull was a member of Liberty Methodist Church and also was a member of Moose Lodge.

On January 26, 1950, he married Ruth Mae McAdams, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Mark L. (Mary Ann) Hull of Washington; a daughter, Judy A. (Charles) Miller of Centerville; three brothers, Dwight W. Hull of Washington, Ralph E. Hull of Natchitoches, La., and Kenneth E. Hull of Orange, Calif.; a sister, Helen Michaels of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Heather S. (Kevin) White; and three great-grandchildren, Logan, Olivia and Caitlyn White.

Deceased is a brother, David Hull.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, January 12, with the Rev. Larry G. Wiltrout officiating. Robert Lee Moore

Longtime dairy farmer was Valley Camp Coal employee

Robert Lee Moore, 73, of West Alexander, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital.

He was born September 24, 1935, in Clarington, Ohio, a son of Herbert and Margaret E. Jenni Moore.

Mr. Moore was a member of West Alexander United Methodist Church.

He was a 1955 graduate of West Alexander High School.

Mr. Moore was employed by Valley Camp Coal for 25 years and was a longtime dairy farmer.

He was a longtime member of United Mine Workers of America and National Pilots Association and was a life member of Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation.

Mr. Moore enjoyed repairing old radios and televisions and going to antique gas and steam engine shows.

Surviving are a son, Benjamin (Diane) Moore of Wheeling; four daughters, Stephanie (Carl) Moore-Inglesby of Fleming, Betty Jane Moore of Utica, N.Y., Dawn Anne (Craig) Strong of Oneida, N.Y., and Heidi (Aaron Stimmell Jr.) Moore of West Alexander; a brother, Paul Moore of Cambridge, Ohio; a sister, Beverly Mitchell of Glen Dale, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Hannah and Nathan Inglesby; and a stepgrandson, Israel Duvall.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Nancy Moore; a brother, Don Moore; his foster mother, Katie Postlewait; and a stepgrandson, Jeremy Duvall.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, 101 Main Street, West Alexander. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Mary Jane Phillips

Housekeeper enjoyed bingo, cards

Mary Jane “Day” Phillips, 84, of Washington, died at 6:50 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

She was born March 24, 1924, in Washington, a daughter of Mack and Gwendolyn H. Catlin Strothers.

Mrs. Phillips was a housekeeper for many families.

She loved bingo, playing cards and traveling to different casinos.

Surviving is her husband, Louis R. Phillips of Washington.

Also surviving are two daughters, Ellen “Reekie” (Clyde) Jones Jr. of Washington and Gwen “Pumpkin” Gordon of Washington; three grandchildren, Clyde Jones of Pittsburgh, Rodney Jones of Washington and Dana (Clyde) Brown of Washington; four great-grandchildren, Colby Jones of Pittsburgh, Katara Brown of Washington, Trevor Jones of Washington and Pamela Brown of Washington; a great-great-granddaughter, Serayah Leech of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a brother, Ralph Strothers, and two sisters, Alberta Strothers and Evelyn Strothers.

William A. Throckmorton

WWII vet was West Greene Elementary School principal

William A. Throckmorton, 85, of Waynesburg, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, after an eight-month illness.

He was born Saturday, July 28, 1923, in Waynesburg, a son of Robert L. Throckmorton Sr. and Ella Watson Throckmorton.

Mr. Throckmorton was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, where he was a member of Lamplighters Sunday School Class.

He was a World War II veteran, having served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a pilot. He served in China and Burma and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Air Medal three times.

Mr. Throckmorton was a member of James Farrell American Legion Post 330 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793, both of Waynesburg.

He was a graduate of Center Township High School and of Waynesburg College Class of 1952. He received his master of arts degree from Syracuse University in 1957 with additional graduate work from the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University and West Virginia University.

Mr. Throckmorton taught for 10 years in several Waynesburg schools and was principal of North Ward School in Waynesburg. He was elementary principal of West Greene School District for 25 years from 1962 until his retirement in 1987. While working as principal, he was referred to as “Mr. T.” Following his retirement, he served on West Greene School Board.

He enjoyed woodworking, watching football and fishing.

His wife of 64 years, Sue Murdock Throckmorton, with whom he eloped to Winchester, Va., on July 18, 1942, died August 23, 2006.

Surviving are three daughters, Carol and husband Paul Kraft of Waynesburg, Jan and husband Timothy Bergen of Monroe, Ohio, and Joyce Poag of Waynesburg; three grandchildren, Traci and husband Dan Seto, Angela Poag and Brian and wife Shannon Throckmorton; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Seto, twins Matthew and Noah Seto, Kaili Seto and Alexys Throckmorton; a sister, Katherine Toothman of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are a son, William Throckmorton, who died April 13, 1987; and a brother, Robert L. Throckmorton Jr., who died November 2, 1972.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton, owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 11, with the Rev. John Poling and Harry Rich officiating. Patrick Keith Walters

Former Mathies Mine employee enjoyed farming

Patrick Keith Walters, 57, of Monongahela, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born May 26, 1951, in New Eagle, a son of Patricia Hamilton Mellor of Carroll Township and the late Clinton Walters.

Mr. Walters was employed at Mathies Mine in New Eagle from 1971 until its closing.

He was a very giving man.

Mr. Walters was Methodist and enjoyed farming.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are two daughters, Beth Anne Stubbs of New Castle, Del., and Lisa Davis of Niceville, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Holly Medlan of Monongahela; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Clinton Walters.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 12, with the Rev.
