JOHN JOSEPH BURICH SR.
John Joseph Burich Sr., 84, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in his home.  
He was born in Brier Hill, a son of Joseph and Barbara Popernack Burich.
Mr. Burich was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in the medical corps in Panama.  
He worked for Duquesne Light Mine for 42 years and was then elected to serve as the United Mine Workers District 4 International executive board member, a position he held for four years. During this time, he also worked for the International Safety Division of United Mine Workers in Washington, D.C. He spent 20 years working on the safety committee for Local 6310 and was proud of all of his service to UMWA. He served as chairman for the Miner’s Memorial that was built at the welcome center off Interstate 79 in Garards Fort.
Mr. Burich was a life member of Greensboro Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6303 and served as post commander for many years. Until his recent illness, he remained an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars to ensure that veterans would continue to have a place to gather. He also was a member of American Legion Post 400 in Carmichaels, Knights of Columbus John F. Kennedy Council 3569 of Carmichaels and Moose Lodge 461 Waynesburg and served on Mon Center board of directors and Mon View Park board of directors. He was a Democratic committeeman for Monongahela Township for more than 25 years.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed sports. He was an outstanding baseball pitcher for the Duquesne Light baseball team in the old Big 10 League. He coached Little League baseball and was president of the organization for several years. He also was assistant scoutmaster for a local Boy Scout troop. He was a high school basketball referee for 15 years and bowled on the Greensboro VFW bowling team for 25 years. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed all types of hunting and fishing.
Mr. Burich was well-known for his barbecued chicken. He loved preparing his special recipe for events at his church for more than 25 years, for the VFW and for family gatherings.
For 18 years, he and his wife, Mary, headed south to their Florida home. He loved being a “snowbird.”
Mr. Burich was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Greensboro and its Holy Name Society.
He was the strength of his family and will be deeply missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mary Chekosky Burich; three children, John Burich and wife Joyce of Vermilion, Ohio, Mary Ann Kushner and fiancé Mel Lockett of Greensburg and Pauline Crumrine and husband Barry of Eighty Four; four grandchildren, John D. Kushner, Danielle Crumrine, Jennifer Caudell and Lynn Hudak; a great-granddaughter, Mia Elizabeth Caudell; and two sisters, Elizabeth Hamburg of LaVelle, Wis., and Catherine Gurick of Greensboro.
Deceased are four brothers, Joseph, George, Sam and Steve Burich.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10:15 a.m., time of service, Saturday, February 6, in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels, (724-966-5100), followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass in Holy Family Church, Greensboro, with the Rev. Lawrence Holpp as celebrant. Full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 400 and VFW Post 3491, Carmichaels, and VFW Post 6303, Greensboro, at Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Greensboro. A parish wake service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Friday evening in the funeral home.

Helen Frazzitta, 92, of Bloomington, Ind., died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in The Residence at McCormick’s Creek, Spencer, Ind.
She was born June 6, 1916, in Long Branch Borough, a daughter of Andrew and Anna Rebres Sedlak. Prior to moving to Indiana, she lived in Long Branch for 84 years.
Mrs. Frazzitta was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family and her many friends.  
She was a member of Howe Methodist Church of Long Branch and American Legion Auxiliary of Roscoe.
Deceased are her husband of 68 years, Joseph Frazzitta; a daughter, Patricia Albright; five brothers, Andrew, John, Joseph, George and Paul Sedlak; and two sisters, Anna Sedlak and Mary Raboci.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and William Black of Bloomington and Marie and Edward Moninger of Silver Spring, Md.; a former son-in-law, James Albright of Long Branch; eight grandchildren, Tracy Black of San Diego, Calif., Lisa Beck of West Brownsville, Christine Albright of Pittsburgh, Richard Black of Palatine, Ill., James Albright of Houston, Eric Black of Bloomington, Aaron Moninger of Silver Spring and Allison Moninger of Silver Spring. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be recieved from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Melenyzer Funeral Home, Roscoe, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, with the Rev. Gary Gregg officiating. Burial will follow in Howe Cemetery, Long Branch. Arrangements are being handled by Allen Funeral Home, Bloomington.

U.S. Army veteran, LTV Steel retiree
Leroy S. Frye, 81, of Burgettstown, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
He was born August 14, 1927, in Hickory, a son of Floyd Albert and Sarah Viola Sloop Frye.
Prior to retirement, Mr. Frye was employed by LTV Steel in Aliquippa.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown, Knights of Columbus Burgettstown Council 3440 and 4th Degree Bishop Boyle Assembly.
He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict.
Surviving are a brother, William Frye of Hickory; a sister, Thelma Marquis of Hickory; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are his wife, Elma Zuccaro Frye, who died October 19, 1998; four brothers, Albert, David, Jim and Harry Frye; and four sisters, Elizabeth Sherwood, Adeline Sheller, Mary Rankin and Jean Dormo.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 7, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church with the Rev. Robert Connolly, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

WWII riveter was St. Hugh R.C. Church member
Helen Klamerus, 89, of Carmichaels, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, in Uniontown Hospital.
She was born February 7, 1919, in Isabella, a daughter of Michael Hegyes and Elizabeth Maskerinetz Hegyes.
On September 14, 1935, she married Joseph Klamerus, who died in 1984.
During World War II, Mrs. Klamerus worked as a riveter in Detroit, Mich., on a B-24 bomber assembly line.
She was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church and Altar Rosary Society, Carmichaels.
In addition to her parents and husband, deceased are a daughter, Margaret Klamerus; two brothers, Peter and Michael Hegyes; and a sister, Elizabeth Betsko.
Friends will be received from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., the time of a prayer service, Saturday, February 7, in Lesako Funeral Home Inc., 204 Dowlin Avenue, Carmichaels. A Mass will follow at noon in St. Hugh Church with the Rev. John Bauer as celebrant. Interment will be in LaFayette Memorial Park, Brier Hill.

Member of Friendship Community Church
Gladys Bates Piatt, 82, of Washington, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009. 
She was born May 27, 1926, in Merrittstown, a daughter of Carl Miller and Ada Seighman Bates.
Mrs. Piatt attended school in Jefferson School District through 10th grade. 
She retired from being a salesperson at Stone Thomas in Ohio Valley Mall.
Mrs. Piatt was a member of Friendship Community Church and of Friendship Community Church’s “The channels of Joy.”
She enjoyed garage sales, driving her car and spending time with her family and friends and loved her precious cat, “Lovie.” 
On August 21, 1942, in Ashland, Ky., she married Charles L. Piatt, who died May 1, 2003.
Surviving are three daughters, Betty Grash of Waynesburg, Linda (Dave) Guthrie of Melbourne, Fla., and C. Darlene (Frank) Kuharic of Washington; a son, Dr. Charles (Diane) Piatt of Dalton, Ga.; two brothers, Donald (Ivy) Bates of Jefferson and Ronald (Threse) Bates of Vero Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Dr. Valerie Grash, Marlyn (Mike) Wise, Krystal (Brian) Smith, Joseph Grash Jr., Jennifer Klingo, Brandon (Amanda) Klingo, Stacie (Kris) Kniha, Jason (Ashleigh) Kuharic and Jared Piatt; six great-grandchildren, Samantha Wise, Austin Smith and Kaylee, Brandon, Allison and Delana Klingo; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are three sisters, Ruth Johnson, Hazel Piatt and Edith Harden.
