Charlotte Mearl Beatty
Co-owner of Frank R. Beatty Inc.
Charlotte Mearl Beatty, 71, of Washington, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
She was born May 17, 1937, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Ewing Shipley and Edria Powell Rhoades.
Mrs. Beatty attended Trinity High School and went on to be the owner, along with her husband, of Frank R. Beatty Inc., which included F.B.T. Trucking. She also was an agent for Eastern Express and Yellow Freight and volunteered at Washington Hospital.
She was a member of Ohio Valley Traffic Club and American Legion Post 907, Taylorstown, Ladies Auxiliary.
Mrs. Beatty attended Lighthouse Community Church and loved her Boston terriers, traveling, bingo and bowling.
On February 26, 1955, in Washington, she married Frank R. Beatty, who died September 7, 1983.
Surviving are two sons, Robert D. (Paula) Beatty and Charles E. Beatty, both of Washington; a daughter, Frankie B. (Jerry) Garrison of Washington; four brothers, Walter (Alice) Rhoades of Prosperity, E. James Rhoades of Washington, Jack (Phyllis) Rhoades of Ohio and William (Marlene) Rhoades of Washington; a sister, Patricia (Walter) Beatty of Washington; seven grandchildren, Nichole, Bobby and Colt Beatty, Kevin and Brennen Garrison and Levi and Chance Beatty; four great-grandchildren; her longtime companion, Alfred Wiltrout; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a brother, Thomas R. Rhoades.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Piatt & Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, with the Rev. James Boyer
1936-2009
The Rev. James “Bus” Boyer, 72, of Burgettstown, died peacefully Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in his home, with his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 18, 1936, in West Virginia, a son of James Steven and Anna Elizabeth Cooper Boyer.
The Rev. Boyer was pastor for 17 years at Unity Gospel Church in Burgettstown, Hillside Chapel in Francis Mine for three years and was the chaplain for Country Friends in Weirton, W.Va.
Besides spending time with his family, his greatest love was his ministry and playing guitar and singing country and gospel music at nursing homes.
He also was a self-employed carpenter.
On August 18, 1973, he married Elizabeth (Betty) Hughes, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, George DeWeese of Oklahoma, Richard DeWeese of Florida, and Jesse Boyer of Burgettstown; four daughters, Tonia Revay of Langeloth, Tammy Dalton of Colliers, W.Va., Loraine Cataldo of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Lori Marks of Penn Hills; 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; four brothers, Steve Boyer, Kenneth Boyer, Charles “Moke” Boyer and Donald (Pete) Boyer; and five sisters, Dorothy Brandon, Virginia “Sis” Lang, Mary Ann Kukich, Juanita Roush and Bonnie Hoberek.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, James D. Boyer; two daughters, Theresa and Sally Mae Boyer; and three brothers, Clarence E., Ray William and Harry Boyer.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Lee & Martin Funeral Home, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in Atlasburg Church of the Nazarene. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Florence. Jean Cline Diewald
Retired Hopewell School District employee
Jean Cline Diewald, 83, of Independence Township, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, in her home.
She was born April 19, 1925, in Adah, a daughter of Louis and Sabina Lombardi Giacomel.
Mrs. Diewald was active in the Cub Scouts and Independence Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and extremely active in New Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church, Independence Township.
She retired from Hopewell School District, where she worked in the cafeteria.
Surviving are two sons, George R. Cline and wife Beverly and Ted Diewald and wife Lisa; six grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Mildred Giacomel of Canonsburg; a sister, Nancy Nimal of Washington; a sister-in-law, Florence Giacomel of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her first husband, George Reckard Cline, who died in 1955; her second husband, George Edward (Ted) Diewald, who died in 1998; and a brother, Angelo Giacomel.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, in New Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church, with her pastor, the Rev. Randall Clow, officiating. Honor her memory by making a donation in her name to New Bethlehem United Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund. Raymond C. Filby
U.S. Air Force veteran
Raymond C. Filby, 73, of Claysville, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1935, in Jefferson, a son of Russell A. and Marie A. Pyle Filby.
Mr. Filby was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Claysville.
A 1953 graduate of Claysville High School, he operated Ray’s Barbershop in Claysville from 1960 to 1985. He also was employed by Cooper Industries for 28 years until his retirement in 1994.
Mr. Filby served as an airman first class in the U.S. Air Force, serving at the 4082nd USAF Hospital.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandson.
On September 2, 1956, in Claysville, he married Connie R. Powers, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey R. Filby of Shaker Heights, Ohio, and Terry C. Filby of Cuddy; two sisters, Betty Hall of Odenton, Md., and Joan Mills of Bridgeville, Del.; and a grandson, Nathan Larry Filby.

Thomas David Hemmings
U.S. Navy veteran of WWII
Thomas David (Dave) Hemmings, 84, of Monongahela, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1924, in Monongahela, a son of John Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Herrington Hemmings.
Mr. Hemmings was a graduate of Monongahela High School, Class of 1942, and a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy and holding the rank of gunner’s mate second class. He was retired from Equitable Gas Co. with more than 30 years of service and had attended Grace Lutheran Church and Free Methodist Church, both of Monongahela.
He was one of the founding members of Carroll Legion James C. Ford Post 949 in Dunkirk. He was very dedicated to his family, being the oldest of his 14 surviving siblings, and was a beloved father and grandfather. He took pleasure in traveling and especially liked to do so by train. Mr. Hemmings loved to be outdoors and devoted a lot of his time taking care of his mother’s property, as well as his own, and when he could, he indulged in bird-watching. He truly enjoyed the view from his window, taking in the beautiful scenery of the river and the railroad.
Surviving are a son, Keith and wife Paulette Hemmings of McKees Rocks; a daughter, Cathy Sue and husband William Levis of Bethel Park; a grandson, Bradley Ryan Hemmings; eight brothers, Herbert and wife Shirley Ann Hemmings of Lakeside, Ariz., Harold “Boots” and wife Dolores Hemmings of Orlando, Fla., Donald and wife Patricia Hemmings of Cincinnati, Ohio, Howard Leroy (Lee) Hemmings of Monongahela, George “Hambone” and wife Mary Rose Hemmings of Donora, Richard “Skip” and wife Ange Hemmings of Monongahela, Paul and wife Patty Hemmings of Cincinnati and Robbie and wife Sandy Hemmings of Montgomery, Ala.; six sisters, Mary (Peg) and husband William Pohts of Garfield, N. J., Shirley May and husband Herbert Seighman of Monongahela, Alice and husband Charles Ingram of Monongahela, Ruth Ann and husband John “Butch” MacDougall of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, Carol and husband Floyd Lee of Tampa, Fla., and Donna and husband John Pocky of Charleroi; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She also leaves a close friend, Nancy Pemberton.
In addition to his parents, deceased are his wives, Zelma Polen Hemmings, with whom he celebrated 44 years of marriage, and Grace Mitchell Hemmings; and a brother, John Hemmings Jr.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, with the Rev. William Bailey and the Rev. Raymond Ursin co-officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery with full military honors accorded by Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad. Carl F. Horvath, 81, of Houston, died Thursday, March 5, 2009.

Thomas F. Kelley Sr.
Former youth sports coach
Thomas F. Kelley Sr., 68, of Eighty Four, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, in his home, after a brief illness.
He was born September 22, 1940, in Eighty Four, a son of Alvie Earl and Marian Belle Martin Kelley.
Mr. Kelley graduated from Bentworth High School in 1958. He served in the Air Force Reserve and attained the rank of medical staff sergeant.
He worked for his father at Kelley Industries for several years.
On January 2, 2009, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in the Washington office as a letter carrier after 35 years of service.
Mr. Kelley played many sports and coached youth sports for Trinity, East Washington, Eighty Four and Bentworth for more than 40 years.
He enjoyed working with and teaching the youth. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, the Nottingham Christian Center Youth Group and his church family and friends.
Mr. Kelley was a member of Nottingham Christian Center and National Association of Letter Carriers.
On May 18, 1968, he married Patricia A. Tush, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Thomas F. Kelley Jr., who lives at home; two daughters, Tracey A. (Sean Sr.) Scott of Washington and Donna Rae (Ryan) Sallee of Eighty Four; seven grandchildren, Morgan and Maverick Kelley, Brittini, Alysha Rae and Sean Jr. Scott and Kaitlyn and Amber Rae Sallee; two brothers, Paul Kelley of Pelzer, S.C., and Raymond Kelley of Donora; three sisters, Patricia Mellars of Leeds, Ala., Marian Partezana of Columbus, Ohio, and Sara Ames of Eighty Four; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a sister, Eva Evans.

Michael Sebro
61-year member of Holy Trinity Church
Michael Sebro, 85, of Cokeburg, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
He was born November 1, 1923, in Van Voorhis, a son of Nicholas and Anna Medvick Sebro.
Mr. Sebro was a 1942 graduate of Ellsworth High School and attended Alliance College in Cambridge Springs.
He was a 61-year member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in Charleroi.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Sebro served as an aircraft welder. For his service, he was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and World War II Victory Medal.
In 1984, he retired from Bethlehem Mines Corp. after 44 years of service. He was employed as a belt operator in the cleaning plant and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1197.
An avid sportsman, Mr. Sebro played baseball for several local community leagues for may years and was a life member of the Cokeburg Moose.
On February 7, 1948, he married Mary Error, who survives. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, surviving are his two daughters, Doreen Fazzolare (Frank) of Amity and Joyce Sebro of Edinboro; a sister, Helen Vilcheck of Cokeburg; and a grandson, Nicholas Fazzolare.
Deceased are his parents.

Former Burgettstown School District bookkeeper
Mary Ann Tasz, 91, of McDonald, died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, in Marian Manor, Green Tree.
She was born February 25, 1918, in Joffre, a daughter of Nicholas and Bessie Pendracky Gratchen.
Prior to retirement, Mrs. Tasz had been employed as a bookkeeper for Burgettstown Area School District for a number of years and later for H&R Block.
She was a graduate of Union High School in Burgettstown.
Mrs. Tasz was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown and its Christian Mothers. She also was a member of Lodge 89 SNPJ in Midway.
On July 31, 1937, she married Joseph F. Tasz, who died November 14, 1990.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann (Bill) Gilbert of Burgettstown; two sons, John E. Tasz (Karen) of Midway and Ronald Tasz of McDonald; three brothers, John Gratchen of Wintersville, Ohio, George Gratchen of Virginia Beach, Va., and Andrew Gratchen of Joffre; a sister, Frances Prata of Bulger; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a brother, Joseph Gratchen, and a sister, Ann Kuzior.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Taucher Funeral Home, 23 Erie Mine Road, Burgettstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Burgettstown, with the Rev. Robert Connolly, pastor, as celebrant. Ruth Tuttle

Ruth Tuttle, 95, of Waynesburg, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, in Greenery Specialty Care Center, Canonsburg.
She was born October 18, 1913, in Bula, W.Va., a daughter of Herbert Lee and Doan Tennant.
Her husband, Albert Tuttle, died October 27, 1997.
Mrs. Tuttle was a homemaker and resided most of her life at Oak Forest. She was Baptist.
Surviving are a son, Albert Eugene Tuttle of Alliance, Ohio; two daughters, Vivian Price of Prosperity and Dorothy Weaver of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Cheek of Wind Ridge.
Deceased are a daughter, Maxine Phares; seven brothers, Robert, Burl, Michael, Fred, Earl and Clyde Tennant and an infant brother; and three sisters, Ruby Tuttle, Margaret Hull and an infant sister.

Sonny Wilson
U.S. Army veteran
Wilbur M. “Sonny” Wilson, 87, of Mt. Morris, died at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, in Rolling Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Waynesburg.
He was born July 26, 1921, in Coolsprings, Fayette County, a son of James Henderson and Beulah Tuttle Wilson.
Mr. Wilson worked at J&L Steel Corp. Bobtown Mine in his early years before serving in the U.S. Army with the 790th Railway Operations Battalion in the European Theater during World War II. After his military service, he worked for the Monongahela Railroad for about nine years before working for Lubrizol Corp. in Painesville, Ohio, until his retirement in 1974. He returned to Greene County after his retirement and resided and worked at the former Michael Lucas Funeral Home in Mt. Morris. Later, Mr. Wilson was self-employed in construction.
He was a member of Mt. Morris United Methodist Church and Temple Lodge No. 28, F&AM of Painesville, Ohio, and was a former member of James T. Maxon American Legion Post 992 of Mt. Morris and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bobtown.
Surviving are his twin sister, Wilma (Sis) Johnson of Dilliner (Dunkard); several nieces, nephews; and his “adopted family,” Jill and Alan Heldreth, and their children, Timothy, Thomas and Hannah, all of Mt. Morris.
Deceased are three brothers, Simeon Wilson, who died in infancy, Harold Wilson and James Wilson; three sisters, Agnes Nehls, Sara Jane Johnson and Maye Pollock; and two half brothers, Clark Wilson and Clyde Raymond Wilson.
