Frank Dawson
Frank Dawson, 76, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009.
He was born January 19, 1933, in Southview, a son of Joseph and Stella Bowland Dawson.
Mr. Dawson served in the Korean conflict with the U.S. Army. He had worked for Consol at the Westland mines and was a member of United Mine Workers of America.
Surviving are his wife, Marcella DeBaker Dawson; a son, Frank Dawson of Hickory; a daughter, Peggy Turner of Key West, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Dawson of Imperial; two sisters, Sara Kasharsky and Bertha Smith, both of Houston; three grandchildren, Brandon Dawson, Heather Chebatoris and Holly Quear; a great-grandson, Owen; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Richard Dawson, and three sisters, Twila Reiner, Martha Cornell and Catherine Ness.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 27, with the Rev. John Dykstra, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church, officiating. Member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church
Lucille Dryburg, 86, of Brownsville, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.
She was born on February 20, 1923, in Uniontown, a daughter of Earl and Nettie Mae Lewis Nelson.
Mrs. Dryburg was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in California.
She was an avid Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Surviving are a son, Walter Dryburg Jr. and wife Jo Ellen of McMurray; three grandchildren, Emily, Alison and Martha; a sister, Ruth Beglin and husband Wray of Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, Walter Dryburg Sr.; a brother, Frank Jacobs; and two sisters, Dorothy Mayle and Eva Anderson.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Thursday in Skirpan Funeral Home, 135 Park Street, Brownsville, where a prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday, March 27, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, California, with the Rev. George Moneck as celebrant. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Richard Eddy Sr.
U.S. Marine Corps veteran
Richard Eddy Sr. of Hamlin, N.Y., died Saturday, March 21, 2009.
Mr. Eddy served with the U.S. Marines for six years.
His former wife, Bonnie Eddy, survives.
He was a son of Caroline Eddy of Delmont and the late Samuel Eddy; father of Richard (fiancee Debbie) Eddy Jr. of Farmington, N.Y., and Barb (Rich) King of Batavia, N.Y.; brother of Ronald (Susan) Eddy of Ohio and Sharon Moore of Pennsylvania; and grandfather of Alex King.
There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in Phillips Church Cemetery, Spraggs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New York State Veterans Home, 220 Richmond Avenue, Batavia, NY 14020.

Agnes Ducar Elish
Local teacher was U.S. Navy veteran
Agnes Ducar Elish, 90, of Canonsburg, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in Consulate Nursing Home in McMurray.
She was born October 24, 1918, in Stockdale, a daughter of Frank and Anna Gazi Ducar. During her childhood, she attended the local elementary school in Stockdale.
Mrs. Elish was valedictorian of California High School Class of 1935. Following high school, she earned her bachelor of science degree from California State Teachers College. Following her graduation from California, Mrs. Elish took a position teaching first and second grades in her hometown grade school. She earned $100 for an eight-month school year, from which she donated teaching materials such as study guides, books and puzzles that she would bring from home for the benefit of the students.
At one time, Mrs. Elish started a Girl Scout troop in her hometown.
When the United States entered World War I, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE. She attended basic training at Victoria Hotel in Boston and Hunter College in Bronx, N.Y., and became storekeeper first class. She then served from 1941 to 1945 at Norman Oklahoma Naval Base, where the Navy based propeller airplanes. She was honorably discharged as storekeeper first class in 1945.
Following her discharge from the Navy, Mrs. Elish resumed teaching first and second grades in Stockdale.
She received her master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh and then attended Temple University to obtain a school administrator’s certification. She was offered and accepted a position in Riverside, N.J., supervising the reading program from first to ninth grades.
In 1953, she met and married her husband, then-Washington County Controller Peter Elish, who preceded her in death.
Following her marriage, she taught for Canon-McMillan School District for 30 years.
After her retirement, she traveled extensively with her husband throughout Europe and the United States.
Mrs. Elish was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg.
She also was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Association, SNPJ Heritage Room Museum and the Women’s Auxiliary of Canonsburg Hospital. She was a member of the board of directors at Mayview State Hospital and was active in various local political organizations.
She enjoyed playing bridge, solving crossword puzzles and reading and was a member of the Wednesday Friends Book Club at Canonsburg Library.
Mrs. Elish had a strong sense of family togetherness and enjoyed family gatherings and reunions. She documented many family events and occasions by keeping records and pictures and creating albums spanning the four generations of her family, thereby creating a veritable treasure of family genealogy.
Surviving are her son, Peter and wife Jeannette Elish of Canonsburg; a grandson, Christopher Elish; a sister, Anna Deane Ducar; a brother, Stephen Ducar and wife Judith of O’Fallon of Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a brother, Theodore Ducar.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Mario L. DeAngelo Funeral Home, 194 East College Street, Canonsburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Full military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 902 of Houston and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg Honor Guard. Edwin A. Jacobs
Machinist for S.P. Kenny Engineer Corp.
Edwin A. Jacobs, 88, of Fredericktown, formerly of Washington, died at 5:40 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington.
He was born July 10, 1920, in Washington, a son of John Harold and Sarah Willametta Mountain Jacobs.
Mr. Jacobs was a member of the former Millsboro United Methodist Church and most recently a member of Rices Landing United Methodist Church.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a gunner’s mate third class in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Mr. Jacobs worked as a machinist for S.P. Kenny Engineer Corp. and also drove coal trucks.
He was an accomplished guitar player and played in several local and Pittsburgh jazz bands.
On May 22, 2000, he married Anna L. Bane Jacobs, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, John H. Jacobs and wife Susan of Pittsburgh and Dave L. Jacobs of Chicago, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two stepsons, John Rogers and wife Leanna of Carmichaels and William Rogers and wife Nancy of Jefferson; two stepdaughters, Barbara Howes and husband Jim of Deemston Borough and Judy Penvose and husband Jay of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a daughter, Linda Lou Allen; a brother, Raymond Jacobs; and two grandchildren, Dennis and Angela Sitar.
There will be no public viewing. Family and friends are welcome to attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday, March 27, in Yoskovich Funeral Home (724-966-5500), Martin J. Yoskovich, funeral director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, with Pastor James D. Lewis Jr. officiating. James Edward Meriweather
U.S. Army veteran
James Edward Meriweather, 68, of Houston, Texas, entered into rest Sunday, March 22, 2009.
He was born October 4, 1940, in McBean, Ga., a son of Lewis Meriweather Sr. and Beatrice Gilchrist Meriweather.
Mr. Meriweather proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife, Marilyn Brown Meriweather; mother Beatrice Gilchrist Meriweather; siblings Marvin Meriweather, Zearolean Meriweather and Arvoyna Meriweather; aunts and uncles Thelma Meriweather, Irene and Bessie Mae Meriweather, Nazarene Meriweather, Ruby and Rose Gilchrist, Bill, Mark, Jabal and Tim Meriweather and Herman Meriweather; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He also leaves many friends.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services, Friday, March 27, in Crespo Funeral Home, Broadway Chapel, Houston, Texas. He will be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery with military honors.

Ansys Inc. employee of 23 years
Janet W. Sasek, 63, of Houston, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Washington Hospital.
She was born June 12, 1945, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Evelyn Welch Surow Braun of Houston and the late John Surow.
Mrs. Sasek was a 1963 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Houston.
She had worked as an administrative assistant for Ansys Inc. of Southpointe, formerly Swanson Analysis, for 23 years.
Mrs. Sasek was a member of Moose Lodge 22 in Washington, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg and Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 902 in Houston.
Surviving are a son, Ed Sasek (Victoria) of Linfield; a daughter, Jody Zylo (Kirk) of Houston; three grandchildren, Trevor and Alexandria Sasek and Kolby Zylo; three sisters, Jean Cholak (Rick) of Meadow Lands, Joan Susko (Michael) of Houston and Joyce Matich (Nick) of Bethel Park; a brother, Jeffrey Braun (Holly) of Belle Vernon; her longtime companion, Rich Cox; and a brother-in-law, Robert Penvose (Beverly) of Houston.
Deceased is a sister, Nancy Penvose.

Jane Arleen Temas
Enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren
Jane Arleen Temas, 79, of Marianna, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township.
She was born in Altoona, a daughter of Earl and Helen Focht Clark. She attended Marianna Borough Schools.
Mrs. Temas was a homemaker and also worked for 10 years in the kitchen at The Meadows Racetrack.
She attended First Christian Church of Marianna and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and playing bingo and slot machines.
On July 6, 1948, she married Nick Temas, who is deceased.
Surviving are four children, Nick E. (Kathy) Temas of Claysville, Debra A. Edgar of Marianna, John M. (Candy) Temas of Millsboro and Laurel L. (Joe) Redd of Marianna; eight grandchildren, Nick (Kim) Temas, Rachel (David) Fickes, Carrie Price, Jason Price, Tiffany Temas, Jane Cape, Justin Cape and Joeylynn Redd; and six great-grandchildren, Austin Demeter, Alexandria Strychalski, Chance Temas, Brian Medlen Jr., Jocelyn Babirad and Kaitlyn Temas.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Nichol Funeral Home, 1728 Main Street, Marianna, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, with the Rev. Dominic Sgro officiating. Interment will follow in Horn Cemetery.

U.S. Navy veteran of WWII
Benjamin M. Thames, 82, of Bethel Park, formerly of McMurray, died Monday, March 23, 2009.
Mr. Thames was an aviation machinist in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was the beloved husband of Linda Hopkins Thames; father of Douglas B . Thames and Barbara Polito (Anthony); stepfather of John A. Sleboda (Monica) and Erin Edwards (Floyd); brother of Mae Nester (Frank), Shirley LeBeau (Jim) and Archie Thames (Kate); grandfather of the late Samara Polito; and stepgrandfather of G. Kyle, David and Carlton.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in David J. Henney Funeral Home, 6364 Library Road (Route 88), Library.
