Linda M. Barley

Thomas Presbyterian Church member was homemaker

Linda M. Barley, 66, of Finleyville, Nottingham Township, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

She was born September 14, 1942, in Valley City, N.D., a daughter of William and DeLois Nord Carlson.

Mrs. Barley was a homemaker and a member of Thomas Presbyterain Church in Eighty Four.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond K. Barley; two daughters, Tara Roche and husband Ted of Johnstown, R.I., and Heather Collea and husband Bob of Gastonia, N.C.; a brother, Lee Carlson of Zillah, Wash.; two sisters, Margo Bailey of Sweden and Colleen Flora of Frederick, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Tyler and Brynn Roche and Braden Collea.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, in Thomas Presbyterian Church, Eighty Four, with the Rev. Linda Jaberg officiating. Everyone is asked to please meet at the church Tuesday morning. Interment will be private. Terry Lee Bowers

Member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Finleyville 

Terry Lee Bowers, 65, of Charleroi, formerly of Munntown Road, Eighty Four, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born June 15, 1943, in Bellevue, a son of the late Fred and Betty Spiegelberg Bowers. 

Mr. Bowers was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville. 

He was a graduate of Monessen High School, was an avid reader and enjoyed all aspects of cars and motorcycles. 

Mr. Bowers was self-employed, owning his own construction company. 

He was the former union president for Drywall and Finishers Union belonging to the Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local  2006.  

On July 16, 1966, he married Sally Ruth Ashoff, who is deceased. 

Surviving are three children, Melanie (Marc) Holmes of Washington, D.C., Terry Bowers of Alexandria, Va., and Jeffrey (Jill) Bowers of Eighty Four; and five grandchildren, Ryan, Staci, Kelsey, Jeffrey and Noah. 

Mr. Bowers was the last of his immediate family. 

Deceased is a granddaughter, Sally Ruth Bowers.   

At the request of the family, there will be no public visitation. A memorial Mass and celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 3609 Washington Avenue, Finleyville, with Father Walt Ryzdon as celebrant. All are invited to attend the Mass. Burial will be private.

Violet Broadwater

Carmichaels homemaker loved quilting

Violet (Dolly) Broadwater, 85, of Carmichaels, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in her home.

She was born May 10, 1923, in Revere, Fayette County, a daughter of Charles Barney Hull and Katherine Elizabeth Rhodes Hull.

Mrs. Broadwater was a homemaker and loved quilting.

She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Waynesburg.

On July 2, 1941, she married William E. Broadwater, who died September 19, 2002.

Surviving are three sons, Gary Broadwater and wife Diana of Rices Landing, Terry Lee Broadwater and wife Linda of Jefferson and James Everett Broadwater and wife Donna Jean of Carmichaels; seven grandchildren, Jeff Broadwater and wife Lori, Derrick Broadwater and wife Amy, Heather Broadwater, Pamela Harrell and husband Ronnie, Tim Davidson and wife Tracy, Kimberly Broadwater and Samantha Broadwater; six great-grandchildren, Kelcee, Eli, Max, Xander, Garrin and Sophia; a sister, Marie Harshman of Jefferson; and a brother, Charles Hull of Carmichaels.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, are a daughter, Dian Davidson; and two brothers, Lloyd (Mike) Hull and Cooley (Bud) Hull.

Willie C. Cameron Jr.

Enjoyed spending time with friends and family

Willie C. Cameron Jr., 77, of Washington, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009. 

He was born May 5, 1932, in Eutaw, Ala., a son of Willie C. Cameron Sr. and Mary Lewis Monroe. 

Mr. Cameron attended Mapletown High School and was a father figure and uncle to many children in many places.

He enjoyed shooting pool, music and spending time with friends and family.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving companion of 30 years, Diane Hickman; children William Graham of Washington, Arthur Graham of Lancaster and Tonya Cameron of Connellsville; siblings Alfred Lewis (Juanita), Patrick Lewis (Gloria), Donald “Bubba” Lewis, Linda Cleveland (Chuck), Patricia Lewis, Barbara Jean Schenck (Edward), Maxine Moore and an additional 10 brothers and sisters; grandchildren Natasha Graham, William Graham Jr., Jaida Cameron and Emani Cameron; and a great-grandson, Tyreese Smalls.

He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and friends. 

In addition to his parents, deceased are a brother, Drew Lewis; and two sisters, Bernice Lewis and Georgia Lee.

Friends will be received from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Lantz Funeral Home Inc., 121 Ridge Avenue, Washington. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, in St. Paul AME Church, Washington, with the Rev. Arthur Doctor officiating.

William Andrew Leonard

Commander of Sons of Legion 175

William Andrew Leonard, 54, of Washington, died unexpectedly Friday, May 8, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born November 7, 1954, in Washington, a son of the late Alfred M. Sr. and Thelma L. Colvin Leonard.

Mr. Leonard was a graduate of West Allegheny High School.

He was a former steelworker at Shenango Inc., Neville Island, where he worked for 20 years.

At the time of his death, Mr. Leonard was commander of Sons of Legion, Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, and involved in all activities related to that position. He also was a member of the Arms Club.

He enjoyed sports and watching golf and football on television.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Michelle Nestor, and a brother, Alfred M. (Ruth Ann) Leonard Jr., both of Washington; a sister, Becky (Jim) Forsythe of Greensboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Shelby Nichole Nestor and Jordan Christopher “Boogs” Nestor; two nephews, Joey (Beth) Oravitz and Shawn (Jamie) Leonard Sr.; three nieces, Paula (Paul) Howard, Tammy (Mark) Post and Pam (Andy) Philyaw; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, with Pastor Floyd Marasco officiating. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery.

Kaitlyn Marie Machesky

2004 Carmichaels Area High School graduate

Kaitlyn Marie (Katie) Machesky, 23, of Carmichaels, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born December 13, 1985, in Morgantown, a daughter of Susan R. Havanis Machesky of Carmichaels and granddaughter of Wilma Smitley Havanis of Carmichaels and the late Robert Leonard Havanis.

She was a 2004 graduate of Carmichaels Area High School and attended Westmoreland County Community College in Waynesburg.

At the time of her death, she was working at Cheddars Restaurant in Morgantown. She enjoyed spending time with friends and shopping.

Also surviving are her father, John Machesky and wife Barbara of Connellsville; paternal grandmother Alberta Nicholson of Carmichaels; a half sister, Kristen Machesky of Carmichaels; and a half brother, Nathan Machesky of Connellsville.

She also leaves several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and someone especially close to her heart, Roger Noce.

Cecelia F. Melega

Brownsville homemaker active in music

Cecelia F. Melega, 99, of Brownsville, died Friday, May 8, 2009, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.

She was born November 14, 1909, in Fayette City, a daughter of Paul Cooper Sr. and Anna Kapcar Cooper.

Mrs. Melega was a homemaker and Catholic.

She mostly enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren. She was active in music and the arts and loved to travel.

In August 1929, she married Frank L. Melega, who died May 23, 1997.

Surviving are two sons, Frank R. Melega and wife Lenora of Rices Landing and Jerome P. Melega of Ligonier; three grandchildren, Mark, Jill and Kerry; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Corazzi of Fredericktown.

Deceased are a brother, Paul Cooper Jr., and a sister, Ann Kukol.

John Gibson Murray

Lincoln Electric Co. retiree was WWII veteran

John Gibson Murray, 86, of Willoughby, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Fairmount Health Center at Breckenridge Village, Willoughby, after a brief illness.

He was born December 27, 1922, in Washington. He moved with his wife, Kathryn, from Washington to the Cleveland, Ohio, area in 1947.

Mr. Murray held a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Washington & Jefferson College and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

After entering the U.S. Navy during World War II, he initially was the engineering officer on a Navy minesweeper. Shortly after the Japanese surrender, he was named the commanding officer of the ship and was honorably discharged in May 1946.

By the end of his 37-year career with Lincoln Electric Co. in Euclid, Ohio, he was responsible for the design of all of the company’s arc-welding equipment and line of electric motors. He was honored as the company Man of the Year on four different occasions during his career. He also represented the company on welding standards committees at both the national and international levels.   

He was a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and American Welding Society. He served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Willoughby and on the Philanthropy Committee at Breckenridge Village.

Surviving are his wife of nearly 63 years, Kathryn Wege Murray; children Melynie (George) Kohn of Willoughby, Cheryl (Mark) Patterson of Burlingame, Calif., and Charles (Leslie) Murray of Moraga, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Deceased are his parents, Howard E. and Wilda Gibson Murray; and sisters Esther McConnon and Jane Carson.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 15, in the Lyons Chapel of the Nason Center at Breckenridge Village, 36859 Ridge Road, Willoughby. Private family interment will be May 16 in Washington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Alzheimer’s Association, 8522 East Avenue, Mentor, OH 44060. Charles Daniel Olson

WWII veteran was Columbia Gas retiree

Charles Daniel Olson, 89, of Washington, formerly of South Wheeling, W.Va., died Friday, May 8, 2009, in his home.

He was born September 20, 1919, in Wheeling, a son of Fredrick M. Sr. and Lillie Gertrude DePriest Olson.

Mr. Olson was a retired service supervisor for Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 1 in Wheeling.

Surviving are two sons, Charles K. Olson of New Jersey and Roger K. Olson (Mary Angott) of Washington; three daughters, Shirley B. Webb of Wheeling, Kay Ann Klusovsky and husband Ken of Little Rock, Ark., and Robin Elenitsas (John Metz) of Washington; two brothers, Fred M. Olson Jr. and wife Chris of Benwood, W.Va., and Arthur Olson and wife Glenda of Bridgeport, Ohio; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Olson, Chad Olson, Tabetha Olson, Charlene Steele, TJ Elenitsas, Troy Webb, Michael Webb, Todd Webb, Tom Wheeler, Tony Wheeler, AnnaMae Mason and William Klusovsky; a sister-in-law, Jackie Olson of Benwood; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, deceased are his wife, Mary Rebecca (Becky) Greely Olson, who died in March 2009; a brother, Samuel N. Olson; and two sisters, Ruth Harris and Olivia Blake.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 11, in Halcyon Hills Memorial Gardens Chapel, Sherrard, W.Va. Memorial contributions may be offered to American Legion Post 1, 2401 Eoff Street, Wheeling, WV 26003.

Ronald A. Pelkey

 Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel retiree, U.S. Marine veteran

Ronald A. “Uncle” Pelkey, 77, of Fredericktown, formerly of Vestaburg, died Sunday, May 3, 2009, in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness.

He was born Decemeber 15, 1931, in Finleyville, a son of Clarence and Kathryn Perry Pelkey. Mr. Pelkey was one of 10 children.

Mr. Pelkey was a 1949 graduate of East Bethlehem High School and had served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He had been employed by J&L Steel at Vesta 5 Mine and also Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel at Allenport Works, from where he retired after many years of service.

Mr. Pelkey was a longtime member of Calvin Presbyterian Church of Brownsville, United Mine Workers of America, Fredericktown American Legion Post 391, Owls Club of Fredericktown, Binnstown-Lowhill Lions Club and Mon Valley Leathernecks. For many years, he served as a commissioner for East Bethlehem Township.

He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Kelleteville and with his dog, “Itsy.” He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, gardening and working in his beautiful yard. He was an avid sports enthusiast.

Surviving are his wife of more than 37 years, Frances Jean Packrall Pelkey; several siblings; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he adored.

Services were private and under the direction of John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, with the Rev. Alexander Jalso officiating. Interment was in Westland Cemetery, Centerville. An online guest book and personal condolences may be accessed at www.GreenleeFuneralHome.com.

Martha E. Siple

Cal U. retiree enjoyed crafts, needlepoint, knitting

Martha E. Siple, 87, of Pittsburgh, formerly of West Brownsville, died Thursday, May 7, 2009, in ManorCare, North Hills.

She was born May 26, 1921, in West Brownsville, a daughter of Andrew and Elise Morgan Swartz.

Mrs. Siple was a 1939 graduate of Brownsville High School. She was employed by California University of Pennsylvania, retiring in 1981.

A member of Church of the Nazarene in Monongahela, she enjoyed working with crafts. Some of her favorites were needlepoint, knitting and beadwork. She also enjoyed ceramics.

On October 9, 1941, she married Quinn D. Siple, who died January 8, 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Richard J. Siple and wife Linda of West Brownsville and Glenn E. Siple and wife Linda of Pittsburgh; and four grandchildren.

Deceased, in addition to her parents and husband, is a sister, Mary Burchall.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, with the Rev.
