Francis E. Bane

Hillman Barge Co. retiree, longtime church member

Francis E. Bane, 83, of Brownsville (Centerville Borough), went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, October 19, 2009, in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

He was born December 13, 1925, in Brownsville, a son of the late John D. and Elizabeth Jones Bane.

Mr. Bane had been employed by Hillman Barge Co. of Brownsville as a grinder and toolman and retired in 1988 after 29 years of service. He was a longtime member of Bible Baptist Church of Hiller and enjoyed reading, gardening and working in his yard.

On April 28, 1951, he married Nancy O. Gillis, who survives.

Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Whetsel of Uniontown and Joann Morris of Marianna; two brothers, Donald H. Bane and wife Irene of Uniontown and James M. Bane of Uniontown; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Robert O. Bane; and a sister, Lillian Johnson.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 24, with Pastor Barry Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Westland Cemetery. Lucille L. Calvert

Homemaker, resident of Brave

Lucille L. Calvert, 70, of Brave, died Monday, October 19, 2009, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

She was born February 2, 1939, in Mannington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Ray Lemley and Mae Simpson Lemley.

Mrs. Calvert was a homemaker and a Methodist.

Surviving are her husband, Charles W. Calvert; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Ryan Calvert and wife Judy of Spraggs; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda McDaniel and husband Dale of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; two brothers, Kyle Lemley and Denzil Lemley, both of Daybrook, W.Va.; two sisters, Bertie Merrifield of South Africa and Pauline Gee of Bloomdale, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, deceased are a sister, Mary Ellen Wharton, and two brothers, Delbert Lemley and a brother who died in infancy, Arzie Lemley.

Deacon Dalhart T. Dobbs Sr., Ed.D., was born into eternal life Monday, October 19, 2009.

He was born February 27, 1931, in Washington, a son of the late Jannetta Eubank Dobbs and the late Clifton Dobbs Sr.

Dr. Dobbs’ early Catholic education began at Immaculate Conception High School in Washington, where he received his diploma. He received his bachelor of science in education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania; his master of science degree in counselor education from Gannon University; his doctor of education in educational leadership from Nova University; and his masters of science and certificate of advanced studies from Fredonia SUNY.

At the age of 69, Dr. Dobbs graduated his theology studies to be ordained a deacon of the Roman Catholic Church.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and, upon his return, married the former Charlotte Newby and began a professional career as a teacher at Academy High School. Years later, Dr. Dobbs was honored by Mayor Louis J. Tullio for being Erie’s first black male teacher. He was an Upward Bound instructor and trainer for Adults in Education and a guidance counselor for minority undergraduates and potential high school dropouts. In addition, he was a university instructor in communication for the disadvantaged at Gannon University.

Dr. Dobbs retired from Erie School District as director of federal programs and special projects. As former director of the Erie Career Opportunities Program, he gained state and national recognition for his expertise in administering programs and coordinating services.

He was also director of the Erie EPDA Program, having provided technical assistance and other comprehensive services to both the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Bank Street College. While director of ESAA and Neutral Site Project for writing school curriculum, Dr. Dobbs received the COBBE Man of the Year Award. He also received a school board commendation for his ability to coordinate services, programs and strategies to facilitate the efforts of school board members, administrators, teachers, parents and students.

A prolific writer and dynamic speaker, Dr. Dobbs presented papers and gave addresses for many state and federal programs and conferences sponsored by such organizations as Pennsylvania Department of Education, ESAA, Title I Parent’s Councils, University of Pittsburgh’s General Assistance Center and Education Commission of the United States. He served as a guest lecturer at several colleges and universities and as a consultant to school officials and parent/citizen groups in three states. The author of several articles and brochures, Dr. Dobbs was the feature of newspaper articles and the guest speaker on many radio and television talk programs. He was the recipient of several humanitarian awards.

In his community, Dr. Dobbs served as a member of several boards, committees and organizations, including Board of Trustees for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Booker T. Washington Center Board of Trustees, Martin Luther King Center Board of Trustees, Gannon University Board of Trustees, Penn State Behrend Agricultural Board of Trustees and Bishop’s Diocesan Christian Formation and Education Council. He was well sought after for his institutional, historical, educational and professional acumen and advice.

As an active and faithful Roman Catholic, Dr. Dobbs’ life was ordered by God and centered in the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Serra Club and Order of the Knights of Columbus.

Loving family members that mourn him and cherish his memory are his wife of 46 years, Charlotte Newby Dobbs; his daughters, Stephanie Dobbs Lapine (Misha), Jennifer Dobbs Woods, Stacy Dobbs Camino (Daniel) and Sarah Dobbs, all of Erie; sons Dalhart Dobbs Jr. (Dawn) of Cranberry, Dana Dobbs (Laura) of Chester, Md., Julius Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio, and a special son, Joe McBlain; two brothers, Clifton Dobbs Jr. (Jenny) and Dr. Vernon D. Dobbs; a sister, Carmelita Dobbs and her sister-in-law, Magdolene Dobbs, all of Erie; a host of grandchildren, Isabel and Dalhart III, Amanda, Emma and Stefan, Zoe, Raven, Felix and Sidney, Xavier, Roman and Isis, Jaida and Adia, Laines, Dalhart, Jasmine and Francisco; and nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

Deceased are two brothers, Gaylord L. and George E.; and three sisters, Ida J., Rose M. and Camilla A.

Mary Louise Flis

Founder, longtime owner of Flis 5 Bridal Shop

Mary Louise Flis, 84, of Washington, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in Washington Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was born September 13, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of Samuel M. and Rose Maggi Comito.

Mrs. Flis was the founder and had owned and operated Flis 5 Bridal Shop for more than 28 years. The business continues today and is now known as Alison’s Bridal, owned by her daughter, Alison.

She was a member of Miraculous Medal Church.

Mrs. Flis enjoyed her family and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans, which she had done for her family and many friends, and reading and doing puzzle books.

She graduated 23rd in her class at Trinity High School and attended Penn Commercial.

On September 23, 1945, she married Albert John Flis, who died March 28, 2005.

Surviving are five daughters, Kathy Keranko, Rosemary (Bill) Tarr and Alison (Dan) Chunko, all of Washington, Eleanor (John) Van Lenten of Louisville, Ky., and Kelly (Willie) Flis of Washington; three sisters, Emma Aquilino, Norma Tracanna and Beatrice Lee, all of Washington; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A sister, Taresa Toth, is deceased.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in William G. James R. Frederick

WWII vet, Federal Bureau of Mines retiree

James R. Frederick, 93, of Brownsville (Centerville Borough), died Monday, October 19, 2009, in Uniontown Hospital, following a brief illness.

He was born March 23, 1916, in Coal Center, a son of the late Robert and Caterina Chaippini Frederick.

Mr. Frederick was a 1934 graduate of West Pike Run High School, a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania earning a bachelor of arts degree in English and also attended the University of Pittsburgh.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Frederick had been employed by Jones & Loughlin Steel Corp. as a mining engineer for more than 20 years and later by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a safety technician, retiring in 1981.

He had been a longtime member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church of Richeyville, Charleroi Elks and Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown.

Mr. Frederick was an avid Penn State football fan and enjoyed horse and dog racing.

He was the last of his immediate family.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Frederick of State College and James Frederick of Centerville; a granddaughter, Melissa Snyder and husband Dave; a great-grandson, Ian Frederick Snyder; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Helen Girdish Frederick, who died January 18, 2003; three sisters, Juanita Barney, Mary Albenze and Frances Frederick; and a brother, Andrew Frederick.

Friends will be received from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, October 23, in John B. Alexander W. Hamilton, 82, of Washington, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in his home. He was born February 6, 1927, in Hopewell Township, a son of Robert and Mabel Wilson Hamilton.

Samuel L. Householder

WWII vet, VFW member was automobile mechanic

Samuel L. Householder, 87, of Corley Road, Manns Choice, (New Buena Vista), died at 1:10 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2009, in Hollidaysburg Lutheran Home.

He was born Saturday, April 1, 1922, in Ford City, Armstrong County, a son of the late Harry and Oceaola Wolfe Householder.

Mr. Householder worked as an automobile mechanic and service manager at Brown Motor Co. in Pittsburgh. He also had worked for Darr Oldsmobile in Washington.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Bedford, Canonsburg Post 191 Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Bedford Post 113.

Mr. Householder served in the U.S. Army as a private during World War II.

He was the widower of Helen M. “Muz” Medofer Householder, whom he married July 19, 1948. Mrs. Householder died January 5, 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, Jane H., wife of Richard Stewart of Strabane; a son, Harry M., husband of Margie Metts of Eighty Four; and three grandchildren, Shana Stewart, Eric and John Householder.

Deceased are a sister, LaRena Debaker, and a half brother, Milford Boylstein.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 24, in Mickle-Geisel Funeral Home, Schellsburg, with the Rev. Raymond Short officiating. Interment will be in Schellsburg Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by Fort Bedford Honor Guard. Ronald E. Jamison

Vietnam vet was TD Ameritrade retiree

Ronald E. Jamison, 62, of Waynesboro, formerly of Dry Tavern, died Saturday, October 17, 2009, in his home. His death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.

He was a graduate of Jefferson-Morgan High School, Class of 1965, and graduated with a bachelor of science in business administration from Youngs-town State University in 1977.

Mr. Jamison was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. During his service to his country, he served on the USS Okanogan and the USS Point Defiance.

He was employed by Rockwell International Corp. for more than 20 years, holding positions of manager of accounting and plant controller. He retired in 2006 after seven years of employment as a manager of finance for TD Ameritrade in Omaha, Neb.

Surviving are a son, Kevin E. Jamison, a daughter-in-law, Angela F. Jamison and a granddaughter, Gabriella B. Jamison, all of Ellicott City, Md.; a sister, Darlene E. Stoner of Gettysburg; and a brother, Greg E. Jamison of Cortland, Ohio.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 23, in Jefferson Cemetery, with full military graveside honors. Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home of Waynesboro is handling the arrangements.

Fred Harrison Moore Jr.

Retired from Jessop Steel Co. in 1971

Fred Harrison “Bud” Moore Jr., 92, of Washington, died Friday, October 16, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born October 6, 1917, the third child of Fred H. Sr. and Jessie L. Wilson Moore.

Mr. Moore was born and raised in Statler’s Run, W.Va., and was a 1936 graduate of Blacksville High School.

Following high school graduation, he worked on oil pipelines in Michigan, Texas and Pennsylvania. In 1940, he began his career as a bar mill worker at Jessop Steel Co., retiring in 1971.

He was an active member of United Steelworkers Local 1141. He held memberships at Rice’s Landing Boat Club and Anawanna Sportsman’s Club.

Mr. Moore was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing trips to Canada and Alaska.

Surviving are his loving wife of 72 years, Margaret (Peg) Coen Moore of Washington; a son, Herbert N. (Lisa) Moore of Saint Johns, Fla.; a brother, Ted K. Moore of Statler’s Run; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Karol Moore.

Deceased are a son, Fred H. Moore III; two sisters, Vera Moore Tennant and Ruth Moore Steinbeck; and a brother, Willie, who died in infancy.

Frank A. Mysza

U.S. Marine Corps Korean War vet

Frank A. “Muzzy” Mysza, 78, of Prosperity, formerly of Uniontown, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, in Southmont of Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.

Mr. Mysza was born November 1, 1930, in Uniontown, a son of the late Adolph and Josephine Drabeck Mysza.

He was Catholic.

Mr. Mysza was employed for many years as superintendent of security at Republic Steel, coal mining division, in Uniontown, until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, receiving the he National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one star and United Nations Service Medal. He also served as a bodyguard for Marilyn Monroe during the Korean War.

He loved to garden and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with all of his grandchildren.

On February 22, 1961, he married Lucille Marilyn Licursi, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Pete Mysza of Washington, Dean (Jill) Mysza of Philadelphia and Frank (Lisa) Mysza of Washington; three brothers, Joseph (Mary Anne) Mysza of Massilon, Ohio, Adolph (Jean) Mysza of Parma, Ohio, and Thomas (Marlene) Mysza of Cleveland, Ohio; five sisters, Julie Florkevich of Uniontown, Aggie Kobosavich of Cleveland, Betty Flak of Cleveland, Mary (Stanley) Stanish of Uniontown and Dinah (Andy) Fiffick of Cleveland; six grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor, Morgan, Alexius, McKenzie and Briana Mysza; and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Ann Waltz, is deceased.

Walter Szczotka

Retired coal miner from Beth Energy in Marianna

Walter Szczotka, 85, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of Washington, passed away Friday, October 16, 2009, after a brief decline in his health.

He was born July 11, 1924, in Manifold, Washington County, a son of the late Adam and Barbara Szczotka.

Mr. Szczotka began working in the coal mines at the age of 15, and became proficient at operating the continuous mining apparatus. He worked for Beth Energy in Marianna. He was known to his fellow miners as “Willie,” but to his family and closest friends he will always be remembered as “Dib.”

He was fortunate to retire at 64 and moved in 1994 to Florida, where he spent the remainder of his days making friends with everyone he came in contact with. He was a never ending source of energy and never seemed to want to quit working. Even as his health began to fail, he still managed to deliver the morning paper to everyone on the third floor of his apartment complex. Sunshine seemed to follow him wherever he went and he will be missed by so many of the residents of Good Samaritan Village, where he and his wife resided.

On July 9, 1949, he married Dolores (Dolly) Senkoski, who survives. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Also surviving are three children, Donna Sitka Lester, M.D., of St. Cloud, Fla., Walter Dennis Szczotka (Penny) of Washington and Michael Allen Sitka (Cindy) of Houston; six grandchildren, Ashley and Rachel Lester, Walter and Kelly Szczotka and Adam and Aaron Sitka; a sister, Wanda Gosciski of Steubenville, Ohio; and multiple nieces.

Deceased are a son, Johnny, who died in infancy, and three siblings, Frank, Annie and Eleanor.

Memorial services are incomplete at this time. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Comforter, 480 West Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, FL 32714.

Anna J. Toth

Active church member, Center in the Woods member

Anna J. Toth, 93, of California, formerly of Fredericktown, died Friday, October 16, 2009, in UPMC-Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born September 6, 1916, in West Point, N.Y., a daughter of the late Felix and Ida Metz Atz.

Mrs. Toth was formerly employed by Bethlehem-Center School District in the cafeteria.

She was a faithful member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, where she was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and Christian Mothers. She and her late husband were founding members of St. James Church in LaBelle and she was an active member of Center in the Woods, California.

Mrs. Toth enjoyed reading, conversation and being around people in general. She also enjoyed traveling. She greatly enjoyed the several trips she took across the country with her son, but especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

On January 28, 1935, she married John J. Toth, who died November 9, 1969.

Surviving are nine children, Pauline P. Bujarski of Spruce Creek, George Toth (Charlotte) and Richard Toth (Louise), both of Parma, Ohio, John M. Toth (Judie) of Tacoma, Wash., Emiliann Gold (Irving) of San Diego, Calif., Michael Toth (Tina) of Denbo, Christopher Toth (Margaret) of Clarksville, Deborah Boback of Carmichaels and Selene Sowden of Pittsburgh; a brother, Henry Atz of Hermitage; 24 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a brother, Rudolph Atz, and a sister, Gladys Garity.

Friends will be received from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where a blessing service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 23, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Church, St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Paul Grunebach as celebrant. Interment will be in Greene County Memorial Park, Morgan Township. Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and a parish vigil service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
