Daniel Lee Barnett

Jessop Steel retiree enjoyed hunting

Daniel Lee Barnett, 58, of Canonsburg, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born Friday, October 19, 1951, in Washington, the son of Myrtle Barrows of Washington and the late Worthy Barnett.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Barnett worked as a steelworker for Jessop Steel.

Mr. Barnett was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era.

Surviving in addition to his mother, are his wife, Janine Arceri Barnett; a son, Adam Barnett (Nicky Kelsey) of Washington; two daughters, Deyka Loughry (Bill) of Cecil and Danielle Paulen (Brian) of Lexington, S.C.; two sisters, Donna Ullom of Meadow Lands and Debbie Maloy of Washington; six grandchildren, Heather, Austin and Shane Loughry, Kendel and Andrew Paulen and Eric Barnett; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Sollon Funeral Home Ltd., 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, J. David Sollon, supervisor, where a blessing service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, November 2, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg, with the Rev. John Batykefer officiating.

Thomas T. Chopak

Lab technician served in U.S. Navy

Thomas T. Chopak, 77, of Canonsburg, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

He was born January 29, 1932, in Canonsburg, a son of John and Pearl Doroschak Chopak

Mr. Chopak was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955.

Mr. Chopak was employed by Edwin L. Wiegand Co. in Pittsburgh as a laboratory technician for 28 years and drove a cab for Chartiers Taxi Co. for several years.

He was a lifelong resident of Canonsburg, who enjoyed reading and working with his hands around the house.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Jo Chopak, whom he married June 21, 1958; a daughter, Maria J. (Buddy) McMasters; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Jesse McMasters; and a sister, Mary Pavlek.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Andrew (Ted) and John Chopak.

Barbara Jean Dillon

Retired McGuffey counselor was Nittany Lions fan

Barbara Jean Dillon of Bethel Park died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, after a lengthy and courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born October 24, 1938, in Mercer, a daughter of the late Mary Raney Dillon and Edward Houser Dillon.

Miss Dillon grew up in Mercer and graduated from Mercer High School in 1956.

She graduated from West Liberty State College, West Liberty, W.Va., in 1960, with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene. She later earned a master’s degree in health education from Boston University in 1962.

For several years, she taught in the dental hygiene program in Palm Beach Junior College, Lake Worth, Fla.

She then earned a master of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 and became a guidance counselor in McGuffey High School in Claysville. She retired from that position in 2000, after many years of faithful service. During her years in McGuffey, she was instrumental in developing many of her student’s career choices. She especially enjoyed visiting facilities of colleges, universities and technical schools, so she could give better advice to her students on their career options. Her students were very important to her and their successes gave her great satisfaction.

Miss Dillon was a very loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. She was also a devoted fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions as well. She especially enjoyed tailgating with her family and friends before and after each Nittany Lions home football game.

She was very involved in breast cancer support groups and believed very much that no one should go through this disease without support from others who are dealing with breast cancer in their lives. She was also a strong advocate for early detection practices.

Miss Dillon was an active member of John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park, where she had served as a deacon. The church was a very significant part of her life.

Surviving are her loving brother, Charles (Barney) and wife Diane of State College; an aunt, Edna Shumate of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many loving cousins.

She also leaves many loving friends who were part of her extended family.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in John McMillan Presbyterian Church, 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, Tuesday, November 3, in Cunningham Funeral Home, 144 South Pitt Street, Mercer. Burial will follow in Mercer Citizens Cemetery.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to John McMillan Presbyterian Church, 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102.

Shawndel Glendenning

Brick mason enjoyed playing pool

Shawndel Glendenning, 47, of Washington, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, in UPMC-Montefiore hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born February 9, 1962, in Allegheny County, a son of John Glendenning and Joyce Rodgers, both of Washington.

Mr. Glendenning graduated from Washington High School.

He was a brick mason and worked out of various unions.

Mr. Glendenning was a kind and giving person. He enjoyed playing pool and, at one time, enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He and his wife, Jamie Gongaware, were married for more than 20 years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Sierra Glendenning and Shania Glendenning, both of Washington; a brother, John “Lil John” Glendenning of Florida; two sisters, Holly Jo (Jack) Bruno and Talara (Tom) Robinson, both of Washington; and two grandchildren, Jerrin and Lathyn.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 2, with the Rev. Fred Helmick officiating.

Karen S. Owens Henze

Former Finleyville business owner was bookkeeper

Karen S. Owens Henze, 50, of Finleyville, beloved wife of Donald Henze Jr., went to be with our Lord Jesus in heaven, Friday, October 30, 2009, in the Center for Compassionate Care, Mt. Lebanon.

She was born January 5, 1959, in New Eagle, a daughter of Paul and Joan Krieger Owens of Finleyville.

Mrs. Henze had been employed as a bookkeeper for the former Value Cleaners in Finleyville.

She was also owner of the former Unique Gifts in Finleyville.

Mrs. Henze was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville, where she had taught CCD, and was active with K’s Angels Relay for Life in Peters Township. She was a former member of Gastonville Elementary Center Parent Teachers Association and Union Township Recreation Board, where she was instrumental in acquiring funding from grants to purchase equipment for both Pleasantview and Union Township parks.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and parents, are three sons, Jason Henze and wife Jeni of Castle Shannon, Joshua Henze and wife Chanté of Dormont, and Barrett Henze of Finleyville; a daughter, Sabryna Henze of Finleyville; four brothers, Paul Owens Jr. and wife Carolyn of Cheswick, David Owens and wife Debra of South Park, Donald Owens and wife Marybeth of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Thomas Owens and wife Lisa of Finleyville; two sisters, Joan Waxman and husband Rocky of South Park and Diane Lucci of Finleyville; her father- and mother-in-law, Donald and Donna Henze of Finleyville; a sister-in-law, Suzonne Baynham of Finleyville; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Kathleen Levinsky; and a nephew, Ryan Owens.

Mrs. Henze was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Milton F. Jeffers Sr.

Decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II

Milton F. Jeffers Sr., 87, of Houston, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born November 24, 1921, in Washington, a son of Michael and Margaret Rafter Jeffers.

Mr. Jeffers served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the 94th Infantry Division in the European Theater under Gen. George S. Patton. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Theater Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze stars and World War II Victory Medal.

He was a machine operator at Teledyne and J&L Specialty Steel for 19 years.

Mr. Jeffers was a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Houston.

He was a member of American Legion Post 902 in Houston and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 in Canonsburg.

Mr. Jeffers enjoyed playing golf and coaching youth baseball. He was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan who enjoyed all sports.

On August 1, 1942, he married Josephine Mull, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Milton “Rusty” (Janet) Jeffers Jr. of Houston; three grandchildren, Jami Craig, Scott Jeffers and Cody Jeffers; a stepgrandchild, Kelley Murphy; three great-grandchildren, Conner, Casey and Carson Craig; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Kayla, Megan and Jenna Murphy.

Deceased are a brother, Michael Jeffers; and a sister, Margaret Roth.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 925 Allison Avenue, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 2, with the Rev. James L. Littell

American Legion member enjoyed riding motorcycles

James L. Littell, 57, of Washington, died unexpectedly Thursday, October 29, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born March 8, 1952, in Washington, a son of the late Harold Alton and Frances Claire Luster Littell.

Mr. Littell worked for four years in maintenance at Cornerstone Care.

He was Presbyterian.

Mr. Littell attended Avella and Washington schools.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mr. Littell belonged to Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, his friends and fishing with his sons and had once enjoyed hunting.

On June 3, 2000, he married Deborah L. Engel, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James L. Littell Jr. and Jayson L. Littell, both of Washington; a daughter, Kimberly Anne Strawn of Washington; two brothers, Joseph Luster of West Finley and John Baker of Tallahassee, Fla.; three sisters, Arlene Ringheisen of Tallahassee, Rose (Thomas) Taylor of West Finley and Cindy Powell of Washington; a grandchild, Samantha AnneMarie Holmes; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased is a sister, Sherry Kasavich.

Dorothy Mae Welch

Claysville H.S. graduate formerly of Taylorstown

Dorothy Mae Welch, 77, of Adena, Ohio, formerly of Tiltonsville, Ohio, and Taylorstown, died Thursday, October 29, 2009, in Sienna Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Adena.

She was born May 13, 1932, in Taylorstown, a daughter of James M. and Edith Cunningham Scott.

She was a member of Taylorstown Christian Church.

Mrs. Welch was a 1950 graduate of Claysville High School and also graduated from Penn Commercial.

She was employed as a secretary for Nickles Bakery and Fairmont Supply.

Mrs. Welch was a member of Taylorstown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

On April 24, 1951, she married Donald Welch, who died February 4, 1988.

Surviving are two sons, James Lewis Welch (Lisa) of Taylorstown and Scott Welch of Tiltonsville; a daughter, Donna Mae Pettit of Washington; a sister, Joann Shook of Avella; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a former son-in-law, Terry Pettit.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, 219 Main Street, Claysville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday November 2, with Pastor Patricia Lutz officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
