James M. Capenos

Member of Crossroads Church, Oakdale

James M. Capenos, 47, of Green Tree, died Friday, October 30, 2009, after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Capenos was an employee of Horizon Information Systems and was a member of Crossroads Church in Oakdale, where he was very involved in the sound for the church.

He was the loving father of Eric J. and Nick, both of Washington; stepfather of Stephanie Williams; son of Mary R. and the late Jack M.; and brother of Mark (Cindy) of West Newton and Paul of Green Tree. Also surviving are nephews and niece, Shawn, Jason and Kristin.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in William Slater III Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, in Crossroads Church, 1000 Crossroads Drive, Oakdale, PA 15071. Mike Dayak, 90, of Muse, died Saturday, October 31, 2009.

Barbara Jean Dillon

Retired McGuffey counselor was Nittany Lions fan

Barbara Jean Dillon of Bethel Park died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon, after a lengthy and courageous battle with breast cancer.

She was born October 24, 1938, in Mercer, a daughter of the late Mary Raney Dillon and Edward Houser Dillon.

Miss Dillon grew up in Mercer and graduated from Mercer High School in 1956.

She graduated from West Liberty (W.Va.) State College in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene. She later earned a master’s degree in health education from Boston University in 1962.

For several years, she taught in the dental hygiene program in Palm Beach Junior College, Lake Worth, Fla.

She then earned a master of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1968 and became a guidance counselor in McGuffey High School in Claysville. She retired from that position in 2000, after many years of faithful service. During her years in McGuffey, she was instrumental in developing many of her student’s career choices. She especially enjoyed visiting colleges, universities and technical schools, so she could give better advice to her students on their career options. Her students were very important to her, and their successes gave her great satisfaction.

Miss Dillon was a very loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. She was also a devoted fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions. She especially enjoyed tailgating with her family and friends before and after each Nittany Lions home football game.

She was very involved in breast cancer support groups and believed very much that no one should go through this disease without support from others who are dealing with breast cancer in their lives. She was also a strong advocate for early detection practices.

Miss Dillon was an active member of John McMillan Presbyterian Church in Bethel Park, where she had served as a deacon. The church was a very significant part of her life.

Surviving are her loving brother, Charles (Barney) and wife Diane of State College; an aunt, Edna Shumate of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and many loving cousins.

She also leaves many loving friends who were part of her extended family.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in John McMillan Presbyterian Church, 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., the time of service, Tuesday, November 3, in Cunningham Funeral Home, 144 South Pitt Street, Mercer. Burial will follow in Mercer Citizens Cemetery.

The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her honor to John McMillan Presbyterian Church, 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102.

Robert A. Farrier

U.S. Army veteran was Columbia Gas retiree

Robert A. Farrier, 77, of Carmichaels, died Friday, October 30, 2009, in his home.

He was born February 22, 1932, in Masontown, a son of the late James and Margaret Channing Farrier.

Mr. Farrier served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and retired as a well tender for Columbia Gas Transmission Co.

He was a member of the American Legion in Centerville and an avid Steelers fan.

On June 18, 1982, he married Grace Maureen Conroy, who survives.

Also surviving are a daughter, Jackie Coughenour (Rick) of Salisbury; a stepdaughter, Joan Brooks (Rick) of Columbus, Ga.; a brother, Edward Farrier of Dunbar; two sisters, Dolores Robinson (Robert) and Darlene Babyak (Michael), both of Masontown; five grandchildren, Katie and Brad Coughenour, Jimmy and Jessica Whoolery and Kirsten Brooks; and a special great-grandson, Jordan Whoolery.

Deceased are a stepson, James Whoolery; and a sister, Elaine Shipley.

A celebration of his life will be held for family members at a later date. There are no other services. Arrangements are under the direction of Paul M. Karen S. Owens Henze

Former Finleyville business owner was bookkeeper

Karen S. Owens Henze, 50, of Finleyville, beloved wife of Donald Henze Jr., went to be with our Lord Jesus in heaven, Friday, October 30, 2009, in the Center for Compassionate Care, Mt. Lebanon.

She was born January 5, 1959, in New Eagle, a daughter of Paul and Joan Krieger Owens of Finleyville.

Mrs. Henze had been employed as a bookkeeper for the former Value Cleaners in Finleyville.

She was also owner of the former Unique Gifts in Finleyville.

Mrs. Henze was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Finleyville, where she had taught CCD, and was active with K’s Angels Relay for Life in Peters Township. She was a former member of Gastonville Elementary Center Parent Teachers Association and Union Township Recreation Board, where she was instrumental in acquiring funding from grants to purchase equipment for both Pleasantview and Union Township parks.

Surviving, in addition to her husband and parents, are three sons, Jason Henze and wife Jeni of Castle Shannon, Joshua Henze and wife Chanté of Dormont, and Barrett Henze of Finleyville; a daughter, Sabryna Henze of Finleyville; four brothers, Paul Owens Jr. and wife Carolyn of Cheswick, David Owens and wife Debra of South Park, Donald Owens and wife Marybeth of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Thomas Owens and wife Lisa of Finleyville; two sisters, Joan Waxman and husband Rocky of South Park and Diane Lucci of Finleyville; her father- and mother-in-law, Donald and Donna Henze of Finleyville; a sister-in-law, Suzonne Baynham of Finleyville; a brother-in-law, Nicholas Levinsky of Finleyville; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a sister, Kathleen Levinsky; and a nephew, Ryan Owens.

Mrs. Henze was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in Kegel Funeral Home Inc., Tim P. Kegel, supervisor, 3560 Washington Avenue, Finleyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, in St. Francis Church, Finleyville, with the Rev. Robert J. Boyle as celebrant. Interment will follow in Finleyville Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffet Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15243, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Georgia F. Markham

Georgia F. Markham, 67, of Marianna, died at 11:40 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2009, in her home.

Edna Barclay Miller

Former LeMoyne House director loved to read, sew

Edna Barclay Miller, 89, of Prosperity (Dunns Station), entered heaven Friday, October 30, 2009.

She was born August 29, 1920, in Carmichaels, a daughter of Israel and Erma Debolt Barclay.

Mrs. Miller graduated from Carmichaels High School in 1938.

In addition to raising her family and homemaking on the family farm, she held positions at J.C. Penneys and Troutmans department stores and served as director of the Lemoyne House in Washington. She also served on the Morris Township election board, was active in the Morris Township and Washington County historical societies, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Washington Current Events Club.

She loved to read, enjoyed sewing, needlework and gardening and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins fan.

Mrs. Miller attended Amity United Methodist Church and West Union Presbyterian Church.

On February 10, 1940, she married the love of her life, Watson Phillips Miller, who passed in 1982.

Surviving are five children, Marilyn Pfisterer (Clyde) of Indianapolis, Ind., Clark Miller of Dunns Station, Barbara Heastings (Richard) of Washington, David Miller (Suzanne) of Blacksburg, Va., and Sandy Talbott (Scott) of Bethel Park; a loving niece, Joyce Cooper (Lori) of Butner, N.C.; a nephew, Jerry Cooper (Betty) of West Union; 15 grandchildren, Linda Newman, Mike Newman, Mark Newman, Brandy Dziak, Jessica Gromley, Chelsea Miller, Shelby Miller, Joanna Liesl Zollars, Stephen Dragan, Dan Miller, Kerry Ellis, Lauren Miller, Doug Miller, Aaron Talbott and Ethan Talbott; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Claire Hathaway of Carmichaels and Martha Metroka of Riverside, Calif.

Deceased are a son, Gregory Alton Miller, who passed away shortly after birth in 1955; and seven siblings, William Barclay, Ruth Hall, Alma Barclay, Charles “Chuggie” Barclay, Marjorie Cooper, Anabel Hoge and Jack Barclay.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd., 395 East Maiden Street, Washington. Additional visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m., Monday, November 2, in Amity United Methodist Church, 644 Amity Ridge Road, Amity, with the Rev. Lois Swestyn officiating. Burial will follow in Amity United Methodist Church Cemetery.
