Frank Andy Sr.

WWII vet, auto industry retiree was outdoorsman

Frank Andy Sr., 89, of Washington, died Monday, November 2, 2009, in his home.

He was born August 31, 1920, in Morton, W.Va., a son of Ben and Angela Marie Muto Andy.

Mr. Andy lived most of his life in the Chartiers Township area and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Washington.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze stars.

Mr. Andy was a partner in Andy’s Tire and Auto, Studebaker dealership in Canonsburg and then J&F Tire in Houston until his retirement.

He was a member of Canonsburg Sportsmen’s Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553 in Strabane and American Legion Post 902 in Houston. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on his farm. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

On June 6, 1948, he married Sylvia Verrone, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Frank (Debora) Andy Jr.; two daughters, Christine (Dennis) Bitz and Karen J. Andy, all of Washington; seven grandchildren, Jason and Angela Andy, Eric, Daniel and Alexsandra Bitz and Matthew and Michael Myzak; a brother, Albert (Terri) Andy of Chartiers Township; and five sisters, Elizabeth Rungo, Angeline (Dominick) Pastorial and Barbara Shipley, all of Washington, and Betty (Al) Cargnello and Virginia Agostinelli, both of Houston; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a great-granddaughter and several brothers and sisters.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/ supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg (724-745-8120), where a blessing service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Thursday, November 5. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. Full military rites will be accorded by VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Pittsburgh Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis or Amedysis Hospice Care.


Annadill C. Bigler

70-year member of IC Church

Annadill C. “Oma” Bigler, 100, of East Washington, died at 2:55 p.m. Sunday, November 1, 2009, in McMurray Hills Manor.

She was born March 4, 1909, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Charles R. and Mary E. Quinn Rodgers.

Mrs. Bigler was a 70-year member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Christian Mothers of the church.

She was a member of Washington Hospital Auxiliary AARP and was a charter member of Christian Mothers Rosary Society.

Mrs. Bigler attended diocesan schools of Pittsburgh, graduated from Carlow College and attended Penn State University. She taught in the Pittsburgh diocesan schools for 15 years, three years at St. Boniface in the North Side of Pittsburgh and 12 years at Immaculate Conception Grade School in Washington.

She loved to play bridge.

On June 4, 1931, she married John B. Bigler, who is deceased.

Surviving are a son, W. Walter “Wally” Bigler of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, John A. (Sandy) Bigler of Ohio, Tracy (Alan) Starnes of Ohio, William W. “Spike” (Kathleen) Bigler Jr. of Colorado, Heidi Bigler of Arizona, Jennifer (Jason) Niehoff of Texas, Carrie (Matt) Sellman of Illinois and Ashley Clink of Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Andrew, Jason, John, Clair, Rachel, Nathan, Alexis and Dakota; a daughter-in-law, Ines Bigler of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a daughter, Maryanne Clink; a son, George B. Bigler; and two sisters, Elizabeth Florian and Marietta Hayes.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Warco-Falvo Funeral Home Inc., Wilson at East Katherine avenues, Washington, S. Timothy Warco, supervisor/director, Susan Falvo Warco, director, S. Timothy Warco II, director. A brief prayer service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, with the Rev. Nicholas A. Spirko as celebrant. Burial will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Township. James M. Capenos

Active member of Crossroads Church

James M. Capenos, 47, of Green Tree, died Friday, October 30, 2009, after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Capenos was an employee of Horizon Information Systems and was a member of Crossroads Church in Oakdale, where he was very involved in the sound for the church.

He was the loving father of Eric J. and Nick, both of Washington; stepfather of Stephanie Williams; son of Mary R. and the late Jack M.; and brother of Mark (Cindy) of West Newton and Paul of Green Tree. Also surviving are nephews and a niece, Shawn, Jason and Kristin.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in William Slater III Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 4, in Crossroads Church, 1000 Crossroads Drive, Oakdale, PA 15071. Joseph Corba

Steelworker enjoyed music

Joseph Corba, 86, of Avella, formerly of Bridgeville and Cecil, died Sunday, November 1, 2009, in Canonsburg General Hospital.

He was born March 20, 1923, in Carnegie, a son of the late John and Anna Corba.

Mr. Corba enjoyed music. He played guitar, piano and organ. He also loved caring for his pets.

He worked as a steelworker in the tube mill for Teledyne Columbia-Summerill Inc., Carnegie Plant.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Corba of Avella; a daughter, Linda Corba Jordan of Washington; a grandson, Jesse (Kristi) Jordan of Baldwin; and a sister, Jean Kozlowski of Crafton.

Deceased, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, John, Michael and Paul Corba; and four sisters, Mary Franczak, Ann Owl, Julia Fontaine and Millie Ferrone.

Friends will be received from noon to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, in Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Route 50), Cecil, PA 15321, where services will be held at 7 p.m. with Monsignor George Appleyard officiating. Private interment will be in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.


Arthur R. Day Jr.

Retired minister served local churches

The Rev. Arthur R. Day Jr., 87, of West Newton, died Sunday, November 1, 2009, in Redstone Highlands, Greensburg.

He was born April 3, 1922, in Washington, a son of the late Arthur R. Day Sr. and Edna Dunn Day.

The Rev. Day was a retired minister, having served Upper Ten Mile Church in Prosperity from 1952 to 1954; Claysville Presbyterian Church from 1954 to 1962; and retired in 1987, after 25 years of service, from West Newton United Presbyterian Church, where he was honored as pastor emeritus. Following his retirement, he served as the moderator for Sutersville Presbyterian Church. He also served the Presbytery of Redstone in various leadership positions.

He was a graduate of Trinity High School and Washington & Jefferson College, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa Scholar and completed his studies at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Day enjoyed writing poetry and had several of his works published.

A former member of West Newton Rotary, he also was the former chaplain of West Newton Volunteer Fire Company and a founding member of West Newton Historical Society. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Claysville Lodge F&AM 243.

Surviving are three daughters, Lydia Hunter and husband James of Kenai, Ark., Rebekah Markle and husband Daniel of West Newton and Mamie Sawdy and husband William of West Newton; seven grandchildren, Bethany Wright, Todd Hunter, Heatherjean Hunter, Elizabeth Driscoll and husband David, Benjamin Markle and Jacob and Mara Sawdy; three great-grandchildren, Liam Wright, Patrick and Erin Driscoll; a brother, David Day and wife Peg of North Carolina

In addition to his parents, deceased are his wife, Jean S. Day in 1980; a grandson, Peter Hunter; a sister, Dorothy King; and two brothers, John and Joseph Day.

Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday in West Newton United Presbyterian Church, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, November 6, with his nephew, the Rev. Patrick Day, officiating. A private committal service, with the Rev. Patrick Sileo officiating, and interment will take place in West Newton Cemetery. James W. Fuller Sr.

Retired truck driver was drag racing enthusiast

James W. Fuller Sr., 68, of Prosperity, died Sunday, November 1, 2009, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 21, 1941, in Washington, a son of William and Alberta Frye Fuller.

Mr. Fuller attended Washington High School.

He was a retired truck driver, having been employed by the former Suwak Trucking Co. and was a member of Teamsters Local 585.

Mr. Fuller was a drag racing enthusiast and enjoyed camping.

On January 25, 1960, he married Carolyn Bird, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, James Fuller Jr. and wife Kathy of Augusta, Ga.; three daughters, Kandy Fuller and Barbara Ringer, both of Prosperity, and Susie, wife of Edward Miller, of Washington; three brothers, Billie, Daniel (Carleen) and Robert (Bonnie) Fuller, all of Washington; three sisters, Shirley Fuller, Karen (Chuck) Megysey and Sandra (Oscar) Gump, all of Washington; and nine grandchildren, “Bud,” Jeremy, Josh, Brandon, Kristin, Christine, Alexx, Parker and James Robert.

Deceased are a son, Charles Wayne Fuller, who died in infancy; three sisters, Lorena Craig, Bonnie Orum and Patricia Andreetti; and a brother, Elmer “Buster” Fuller.

Friends are welcome from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hummell and Barnhill Funeral Home Inc., 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, Douglas M.
