David McMillen
Retired welding instructor was WWII vet, sportsman
David (Ed) McMillen, 91, of Houston, died at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in Presbyterian SeniorCare, Washington.
He was born December 21, 1917, in Canonsburg, a son of George Edward Sr. and Nettie Denny McMillen.
Mr. McMillen lived most of his life in the Houston area, where he was a member of Houston United Presbyterian Church.
He was a graduate of East Washington High School, Class of 1935.
Mr. McMillen attended Waynesburg College before joining the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars. After serving his country, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a vocational technical degree.
A certified welder, Mr. McMillen was a welding instructor at Technician Training School in Pittsburgh and prior to his retirement, he was a steamfitter/welder with Local 449 of Pittsburgh.
He was a member of Chartiers Lodge 297 F&AM of Canonsburg, Syria Shrine and was past president of Washington, Greene County Caravan 2.
Mr. McMillen was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing and trap shooting. He was a member of Amateur Trap Shooting Association and National Rifle Association and was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a life member and past president of Canonsburg Sportsmen’s Association, a charter member of Chartiers Township Volunteer Fire Department, past Commander of American Legion Post 253 and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg. He also belonged to the Bears Club in Meadow Lands and Houston Independent Club, among various other organizations.
On July 19, 1946, he married Lillian Davis, who died September 18, 1992.
Surviving are a son, James David (Cheryl) McMillen of Houston; a daughter, Carol (Norb) Barthelmes of Washington; three grandchildren, J.D. McMillen Jr., Michael McMillen and David Barthelmes; three great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Lillian and Lindsay McMillen; a stepbrother, Joseph “Mickey” McMillen of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his wife and parents, are his stepmother, Josephine Weaver McMillen; two sisters, Mildred and Betty; and a brother, George McMillen Jr.
Friends are welcome from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Salandra Funeral Service Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, November 9, with the Rev. Clarejean Haury, pastor of First United Presbyterian Church of Houston, officiating. Interment in National Cemetery of the Allegheny’s, Cecil Township, will follow with full military rites by VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 Honor Guard. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday by Chartiers Lodge 297 F&AM of Canonsburg. Surviving are several additional nieces and nephews, Kathleen Miles, Deborah Miles, Barbara Plants, Cindy Plants, Sandra Brown, William Miles, John Plants, Charles Plants Jr., Kenneth Lee and Richard Plants.
Also surviving are two sisters, Alice DePaoli and May Plants.
George P. Sevec
WWII vet, 50-year member of Local 286
George P. Sevec, 86, of Clarksville, died Thursday, November 5, 2009, in Golden Living Nursing Center, Waynesburg.
He was born February 21, 1923, in Nellie, a son of the late John and Eva Sevec.
Mr. Sevec worked in construction for Laborers International and was a member of Local 286 in Brownsville for more than 50 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Sevec was an excellent bowler who also enjoyed spending time fishing. He was a great swimmer and had a great love for dogs.
He was a member of St. Thomas Church, Clarksville.
Surviving are a sister, Eva Vojtush of Clarksville; a brother, John Sevec (Elizabeth) of Washington; a sister-in-law, Verna Sevec; the LaRosa family, Richard, Susan, Annabelle and Richard; six nieces; three nephews; three grandnephews, two grandnieces; and five great-grandnieces and -grandnephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, are three brothers, Joseph, Frank and Andrew Sevec; and a sister, Veronica Sevec.
Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Greenlee Funeral Home, 42 Bank Street at Crawford Road, Fredericktown, where a blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 7, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Clarksville, with the Rev. J. Francis Frazer as celebrant. Interment will follow in Crucible Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Greene County Humane Society, 183 Jefferson Road, Waynesburg, PA 15370. Clarence “Bud” Shaw, 82, of Casselberry, Fla., died November 1, 2009.
He was a Waynesburg High School graduate.

Patricia Susan Slebodnik
Nurse’s aide worked in senior care
Patricia Susan Slebodnik, 62, of Canonsburg, died Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in Canonsburg General Hospital.
She was born October 22, 1947, in Washington, a daughter of the late Robert and Helen Marchione Kiggans.
Mrs. Slebodnik had been a nurse’s aide for five years at Horizon Senior Care in Canonsburg and also worked at other senior care centers, including Kade Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington.
She attended Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church and enjoyed playing bingo.
Her husband, Robert Slebodnik, died in February 2002.
Surviving are two sons, Edward (Rebecca) Bush of Canonsburg and Kevin Bush of Washington; a sister, Laura Kiggans of Washington; and four grandchildren, Edward Bush Jr., Donovan Bush, Dominic Bush and Morgan Bush.
Deceased is a brother, Robert Kiggans.

Cecil homemaker, member of St. Mary’s Parish
Josephine Rose “Beke” Turiczek, 96, of Cecil, died Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in Townview Health and Rehab Center, Canonsburg.
She was born June 9, 1913, in Cecil, a daughter of the late Calister and Josephine Baptiest Vallet.
Mrs. Turiczek was a member of St. Mary’s Parish and Hilltoppers, Cecil.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed bingo and crocheting and had been an avid bowler.
Surviving are a son, Stephen T. (Louise) Turiczek Jr. of Cecil; two daughters, Alice K. (Bernard) Vater of Johnstown and Judith Pruss of Cecil; five grandchildren, Lisa (Wes) Bruce and Tammy (Tony) Rolin, both of Cecil, Janet (Doug) Freshour of Johnstown, Richard (Teri) Vater of California and Susan (Keith) Blasko of Davidsville; 12 great-grandchildren, Wesley Bruce, Isabella, Anthony and Stephen Rolin, all of Cecil, Justin and Christopher Freshour of Johnstown, Ryan and Cary Vater of Landsville, Shelby Vater of California and Todd, Nicole, and Kayla Blasko of Davidsville.
Deceased are her husband, Stephen Joseph Turiczek, in 1971; five brothers, Andrew, Sidney, Baptiest, Calister and Serphin Vallet; and three sisters, Alexine McPherson, Harriet Gauthier and Alma Andrews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, 3378 Millers Run Road (Route 50) Cecil, PA 15321. Prayers of transfer will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 7, in the funeral home, followed by funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Cecil, with Father Stan Gregorek officiating.
