Mary Jane Blackburn of Washington died Friday, October 30, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington.

Christina Anne Cooper

Former 4-H Club member

Christina Anne Cooper, 27, of Burgettstown, died Friday, November 6, 2009, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born September 17, 1982, a daughter of John and Sharon Winters Cooper of Burgettstown.

She was a former member of the 4-H Club and was a Washington County DUI poster child.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a son, Benjamin Wilson, at home; a sister, Amber Cooper of Washington; a brother, John Cooper of Steubenville, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m., the time of service, Monday, November 9, in Thomas-Little Funeral Service Inc., 106 St. John Street, Midway, Patrick Konieczny, owner/director.

Sylvia Prigg Hagerty

Member of Church of the Covenant

Sylvia Prigg Hagerty, 94, of Washington, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, November 6, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born July 13, 1915, in Washington, a daughter of Harry C. and C. Elizabeth Mounts Prigg.

Mrs. Hagerty was employed as a clerk for Woolworth’s for 17 years, until her retirement in 1977.

She was a graduate of Trinity High School.

Mrs. Hagerty was a member of Church of the Covenant.

On October 1, 1936, she married Frank Gale Hagerty, who died in 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Willoughby of North Carolina and Susan (Michael) Caro of New York; a brother, James Prigg of Washington; a sister, Grace Prigg of Washington; a son-in-law, Dale Calvert of Washington; two grandsons, Mark Willoughby and Seth Caro; three granddaughters, Kimberly Calvert, Jody Wooten and Janis Crawford; a great-grandson, Trevor Willoughby; and a great-granddaughter, Beth Willoughby.

Deceased are a son, Frank C. Hagerty; a daughter, Betty Calvert; a brother, LeRoy Prigg; three sisters, Maudeline McQuay, Helen Danley and Mary Lou Auld; and a granddaughter, Jean Willoughby.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation. Services and burial will be private. Mary E. Hartley

Owned and operated Flowers by Howard

Mary E. Hartley, 85, of Carmichaels, died at 6:10 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009, in her home.

She was born April 27, 1924, in Inglesmith, a daughter of the late James Oscar and Lula Robison Barnes.

Mrs. Hartley was a graduate of Everett High School and attended California University of Pennsylvania.

She served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member and Bible class instructor at First Christian Church of Carmichaels.

Mrs. Hartley taught art and home economics at the Youth Development Center in Waynesburg until 1969. She and her son, Howard Hartley, owned and operated Flowers by Howard in Carmichaels from 1969 until 2003.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a daughter, Marlene DeFrank and husband Ted of Rices Landing; two grandchildren, Candace Klimek and husband Scott and David DeFrank and wife Christina; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Paige DeFrank; a sister, Alverta Hall and husband Earl of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Jeanne M. Hartley; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Hartford D. “Hottsey” Hartley; a son, Howard D. Hartley; and a sister, Vada Morris.

Family and friends are welcome from noon to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Yoskovich Funeral Home, Martin J. Yoskovich, director, 300 South Vine Street, Carmichaels, where a service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 9, with the Rev. Reagan L. Fike and Pastor R. Scott Teets officiating. Samuel R. Kerr Jr.

U.S. Army veteran enjoyed fishing

Samuel R. (Sam) (Sonny) Kerr Jr., 61, of Trees Mills, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2009.

He was born May 13, 1948, in Waynesburg, a son of the late Samuel R. and Eva Jean Kuhn Kerr.

Mr. Kerr recently retired from Dominion Transmission, formerly CNG, in Delmont.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Kerr was a member and past commander of Slickville American Legion Post 18 and a member of Delmont Volunteer Fire Department, Slickville Sportsman Club and New Alexandria Fireman’s Club.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Kerr will be greatly missed by his loving family. He will be especially missed by his canine companion, Buddy, his boxer.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 41 years, Mildred “Dolly” Pekich Kerr; daughters Stacey Smith and husband Doug of Export and Michelle Christner and husband Jerry of Jeannette; and a special cousin, Chuck Craig.

He was the proud grandfather of Minna and Cody and proud great-grandfather of Dominick, who was his “little buddy.”

Hermania L. “Granny” Matko, 89, of Fredericktown, died Thursday, November 5, 2009, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lengthy illness.

She was born March 10, 1920, in Charleroi, a daughter of Mike and Katie Debnar.

Mrs. Matko was a longtime member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, St. Michael Archangel Church of Fredericktown and a member of Croatian Fraternal Union St. George Lodge 354 of Cokeburg and Croatian Bowling League.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, gardening and spending time with her family.

Surviving are four daughters, Joanne Harvey (William) of Scenery Hill, Kathleen Moore of Deemston, Donna Linton of Scenery Hill and Jean Higgins (Daniel) of Washington; two sons, Robert Matko (Roseanne) of Belle Vernon and John Matko (Barb) of Richeyville; a brother, William “Cook” Debnar of Canonsburg; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Steve Matko, who died December 14, 1994; a son-in-law, Norman Moore, who died June 23, 2007; a grandson, Donnie Moore; five sisters, Mary Smeloski, Emma Genzano, Katie Mosser, Irene Coulson and Genevieve Poteray; and four brothers, Mike, John, Andy and Daniel Debnar.

Friends will be received from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday in John B. Greenlee Funeral Home, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, where a prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday, November 9, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Fredericktown, with the Rev. Freda R. Soles McVay, 76, of Cameron, W.Va., died Friday, November 6, 2009, in Cameron Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, W.Va.

She was born January 14, 1933, a daughter of the late Arch and Mildred Moose Soles.

Mrs. McVay was a member of Windy Gap Church of God, Cameron Moose Lodge 758 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 18 in Cameron.

She retired from Greene Valley Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are four sons, Hubert (Patti) Ross of Aleppo, David (Cindy) Ross of Graysville and Randy (Darlene) Ross and Ronnie (Karen) Ross, both of Cameron; three sisters, Verena (Bob) Willhide, Shirley (Jim) Cain of Warren, Ohio, and Katie (Howard) Cain of Cortland, Ohio; a brother, Ralph (Karen) Soles of Littleton, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her husband, Dale E. McVay; two brothers, Charles Soles and Rex William Soles; and a great-granddaughter, Makenzie Dulaney.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Anderson Funeral Home, 39 Maple Avenue, Cameron, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 9, with the Rev. Jack Gray officiating.

Robert Bradford Smith

Land surveyor enjoyed harness racing

Robert Bradford “Smitty” Smith, 83, of Washington, died Friday, November 6, 2009, in his home.

He was born September 16, 1926, in Coraopolis, a son of the late Harry Bradford and Sararose Peters Smith.

Mr. Smith graduated from Coraopolis High School in 1947.

He was a land surveyor for Gavlick Construction for more than 55 years.

Mr. Smith was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose, past president of Arden Club and a longtime member of Washington Country Club. He was also a member of Coraopolis Methodist Church.

He enjoyed Pittsburgh sports as well as harness racing. He owned several racehorses, most notably “Iron City Smitty.”

On June 27, 1964, he married Jacquelyn Jo Mosier, who survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Rebecca (Joe) Kolter of Mt. Lebanon, Bonnie Jo (Ben) Rankin of North Chelmsford, Mass., and Tracy Lynn (Michael) Tush of Washington; a sister, Marjorie Smith of Coraopolis; and three grandchildren, Jason (Erin) Kolter, Laura Rankin and Alex Tush.

Deceased is a sister, Agnes Elizabeth (Aggie) Smith.

Glenn Richard Swartz, 65, of Claysville, died unexpectedly Friday, November 6, 2009, in his home.

He was born September 12, 1944, in Washington, a son of Glenn W. and Anna Mae Swartz.

Mr. Swartz attended Claysville United Methodist Church.

He was a 1963 graduate of McGuffey High School.

Mr. Swartz was formerly employed by Troutman’s Department Store in Washington and as a tree trimmer.

He enjoyed walking, hunting and guns.

Surviving is a sister, Nancy I. Swartz, with whom he made his home.

Deceased are his parents.
