Sara R. Yohe Adams

Former Ginger Hill resident

Sara R. Yohe Adams, 87, of Rostraver Township, formerly of Ginger Hill, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, in Country Care Manor, Fayette City.

She was born October 10, 1921, in Ginger Hill, a daughter of George W. and Rosalie Jones Yohe.

Mrs. Adams was a graduate of Monongahela High School, Class of 1938.

She was a member of Round Hill Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth Township.

Mrs. Adams was a former member of National Pike Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington.

Surviving are two sons, Charles W. Adams and wife Karen of Kimberly, Ala., and John R. Adams and wife Mary of Rostraver Township; two grandsons, Daniel Adams of Rostraver Township and Cpl. Brian Adams, U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Iraq; two brothers, Davis G. Yohe of Monongahela and Larry W. Yohe of Battle Creek, Mich.; and a sister, Barbara Crowe of Holly Springs, Ga.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Robert Adams, who died October 12, 1993, and her brother, Marcus G. Yohe.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 West Main Street, Monongahela, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 8, with the Rev. Lowell Meek officiating.

Interment will take place in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Carroll Township.

David Eugene Applegate

Member of Central Assembly of God Church

David Eugene Applegate, 72, of Washington, a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 3, 2008, at home, with his family at his side.

He was born April 5, 1936, in Washington, one of four children to George and Louise Kopp Applegate.

Mr. Applegate was a longtime member of Central Assembly of God church of Houston, where he taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. He served on the church board, was a Sunday school superintendent and youth leader, and, as a building committee member, oversaw many church construction projects and building additions. He also served as a board member for Washington County Youth for Christ ministry. He loved teaching and sharing his faith in Christ with others, and was a man of profound wisdom and faith.

He was a 1956 graduate of Trinity High School, where he played football and wrestled competitively.

He loved to read, play golf, travel with his family and go hunting with his son and brothers-in-law.

As an employee, he was a machine operator for Washington Steel Corp. from July 1956 until his retirement in July 1998.

He also served for many years as secretary of the Washington Steel employees union.

On January 15, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, Frances M. Kulla of Washington. They were blessed with 52 years of marriage, two children and five grandchildren.

Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Frances Marie; a son, David Paul Applegate and wife Debi Applegate of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Kathy Louise Barnes and husband Rick Barnes of Hermitage; two brothers, Jack Woods and wife Gerry of Cincinnati, Ohio, and George Applegate and wife Phyllis of Richmond, Ky.; two sisters, Judy Bilak and husband Mike of Follansbee, W.Va., and Lorene Mueller of Washington; grandchildren Eric and Kari Barnes of Springfield, Mo., and Audrey, Emily and Zachary Applegate of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Hummell and Barnhill Funeral Home Inc., Thomas W. Hummell, supervisor, and Douglas M. Jones, director, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, and from 10 to 11 a.m., the time of services with the Rev. Steve Getchell officiating, Monday, December 8, in Central Assembly of God Church, 155 McGovern Road, Houston. Entombment will follow in Peace Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray. Francis A. Briggs

Blacktop Paving Co. retiree

Francis A. “Sonny” Briggs, 69, of Washington, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2008, in his home.

He was born January 4, 1939, in Canton Township, a son of Warren and Ruth McDonald Briggs.

Before his retirement, Mr. Briggs was a foreman with Blacktop Paving Co.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are five children, Warren Briggs of the state of Washington, Deborah Coger of Carmichaels, Teresa Glotfelty of Dunlevy, Robert Briggs of Celina, Tenn., and KaSandra Briggs of Washington; brothers and sisters Margaret Gallo of Washington, Martha Tsampis of Edison, N.J., Warren Briggs Jr. of Wilkes-Barre, Mabel Wesley of Piscataway, N.J., and Donald Briggs of Meadow Lands; and several grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, Samuel and John Briggs.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public visitation or services. Burial will be private in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township.

Patricia McCormick Gray

Patricia McCormick Gray of Washington died peacefully and painlessly in her home Monday, December 1, 2008, following 11 months of living with cancer. Although the disease sapped her physical strength, it was unable to steal her emotional strength and determination.

She enjoyed her family and friends, her passion for knowledge and understanding, and her gardening and her home throughout the seasons until her last moments.

Mrs. Gray was born November 21, 1920, in Latrobe, a daughter of William Edward and Jessie Smith McCormick.

She graduated from Latrobe High School and attended Sullins College in Virginia, leaving after two years so that a younger sibling could attend college.

Prior to her marriage in 1952, she was employed by Latrobe Steel for 10 years.

Surviving are daughters Nancy R. Gray of Washington and Deborah G. (Vincent A.) Scardina of Key West, Fla., and grandchildren who brought her much pride and joy, Cara Leigh Shaffer, Vincent Gray Scardina and Richard Anthony (Tony) Scardina. She also leaves her husband’s family and her many treasured friends who enriched her life and became like family.

Deceased are husband, Richard Roihan Gray, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonal, originally of Greensburg, who passed away in 1997; and siblings Phyllis McCormick Snyder, Dorothy McCormick, Edward McCormick, Robert Kelly McCormick and William McCormick.

Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m., the hour of service, Saturday, December 13, in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington. Friends and family will be received in her home for an open house and light meal following the service. Mrs. Gray will be interred with her husband in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery at a later date.

Kenneth Medvid

Upper St. Clair School District employee

Kenneth Medvid, 55, of Peters Township, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

He was the beloved husband of Debra (Debbie); father of Kenny and Brian Medvid; a son of Sylvia Krek Medvid and the late Nicholas Medvid; a son-in-law of Robert and Rita Kowalewski; a brother of Nick (Elaine) Medvid and Bob (Marcia) Medvid; and an uncle of Nick and Courtney Medvid.

Mr. Medvid was employed by Upper St. Clair School District and a member of Peters Township High School Band Boosters Club.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Duquesne.

Enjoyed reading murder mysteries

Eleanor A. “Sis” Garber Riggs, 66, of Washington, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington, following a lengthy illness.

She was born November 3, 1942, in Washington, a daughter of William and Edith Taylor Riggs.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and reading murder mysteries.

She was a member of the Jessop Club and the Eagles.

She was an avid bingo player.

She was Protestant.

Surviving are two sons, Raymond (Jake) Garber Jr. and Michael (Junell) Garber, and a daughter, Cindy Riggs, all of Washington; five stepchildren; six grandchildren, Logan Riggs, Brittney Garber, Amber Garber, Cheyanne Garber, Raeanne Garber and Landin Garber; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased are her longtime companion, Raymond D. Garber Sr., who died November 1, 2002; a grandson, Blake; a brother, Robert Riggs; and a sister, Edith Mae Gray.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in William G. Carolyn Fullerton Smith

Carolyn Fullerton Smith, 61, of Claysville, formerly of Washington, died Thursday, December 4, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.

She was born January 24, 1947, in Washington, a daughter of Harry “Chick” and Ruth Louise Lacock Fullerton.

Mrs. Smith was a 1964 graduate of Trinity High School. She later attended Penn Commercial and graduated first in her class.

For several years, Mrs. Smith worked as a legal secretary for Bloom, Bloom and Rosenberg. She had also worked at York Realty and Keith R. Sims Insurance Agency.

Mrs. Smith attended Avery United Methodist Church.

She loved to read and solve crossword puzzles.

On April 11, 1975, she married David C. Smith Sr., who survives.

Surviving, in addition to her mother and husband, are three sons, Richard E. (Nicole) Tarr of Canonsburg, David C. (Alexis) Smith Jr. of Tiltonsville, Ohio, and James M. Smith of Claysville; two stepdaughters, Michelle Jean (Ray) Crotts of Spartanburg, S.C., and Melissa Ann (Dr. Timothy) Miley of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, William R. (Sheila) Fullerton of Amity; a sister, Sherry L. (James) Osborn of Washington; three grandchildren, Nicholas Tarr, Morgan Tarr and Tyler Smith; and four stepgrandchildren, Breanna Tate, Alec Tate, Braydon Miley and Kian Miley.

Her father is deceased.

Sprinkles, her late Dalmatian, was her special protector.

David Ingram Stegenga

Member of Meadow Lands United Methodist Church

David Ingram Stegenga, 61, of Houston, died Monday, December 1, 2008, in Donnell House, Washington.

He was born June 20, 1947, in Pittsburgh, a son of Betty Ingram Stegenga of Erie and the late George B. Stegenga.

Mr. Stegenga was a 1965 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School and graduated from Point Park College in 1969.

He owned and operated a local pest control business.

Mr. Stegenga was a member of Meadow Lands United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed traveling and the music of The Moody Blues.

Surviving are a son, David I. Stegenga II (Deborah) of Houston; a grandson, Joseph; three sisters, Jann Mumford (Alan) of Crystal River, Fla., Dr. Dorothy Fryer (Ned) of St. Louis, Mo., and Robin Fox (Henry) of Erie; a brother, George B. Stegenga Jr. (Cynthia); six nieces; five nephews; and two great-nephews.

Friends of the family will be received from 11 to 11:30 a.m., the time of a memorial service, Saturday, December 13, in Meadow Lands United Methodist Church. Walter D. Tabor III

Avid racing fan

Walter D. “Butchie” Tabor III, 42, of McDonald, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

He was born March 31, 1966, in Mt. Lebanon, a son of Walter D. “Butch” and Janet Louise Walnoha Tabor Jr. of McDonald.

Mr. Tabor attended Chartiers Valley High School.

He worked as an electrician for Serakowski Electric in Oakdale.

Mr. Tabor enjoyed racing and was an avid fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Surviving are a sister, Pamela Shea (John Schlebusch) Tabor of McDonald; a niece, Heather E. (Chris Marlar) Ayers of McDonald; and a maternal grandmother, Anna Mae Walnoha of McDonald.

Hugh B. Wallace

Labor relations supervisor

Hugh B. Wallace, 82, of Shelbyville, Ky., died Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

A native of Taylorstown, he was the son of James Homer and Charlotte Ann Boone Wallace.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Wallace was a retired labor relations supervisor for Bechtel Corp. of San Francisco, Calif. From 1947 to 1969, he was the labor relations supervisor for Koppers Construction of Pittsburgh.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Shelbyville.

Mr. Wallace held memberships in Shelbyville Rotary Club, Taylorstown Post 907 of the American Legion and Claysville Lodge 447 of Free and Accepted Masons.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Emily (Brenda) Hodgens Wallace; two sons, Philip D. Wallace (Tammy) of Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., and Dr. David Wallace (Regina) of Shelbyville; a brother, James H. Wallace Jr. of North Ridge, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Bradley Wallace, Nicholas Wallace (Lyndsey), Carrie Beth Candeto (John) and Patrick A. Wallace.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Hall-Taylor Funeral Home, Shelbyville, and 9 to 11 a.m., the time of services, Monday, December 8, in Michael H. Heinrich Funeral Home, 219 Main Street, Claysville, with Pastor Doug Seaman officiating. Interment will follow in Claysville Cemetery.
