Marie C. Fazzari

Greene County resident was a homemaker

Marie C. Fazzari, 90, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

She was born December 16, 1918, in Cumberland Township, Greene County, a daughter of Friel “Jack” Cozard and Ida Huggins Cozard.

Mrs. Fazzari was a 1936 graduate of Cumberland Township High School.

She was a homemaker and was baptized in Muddy Creek Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Fazzari was a member of American Legion Post 954 Auxiliary in Jefferson for 61 years and Jefferson Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary.

In January 1947, she married Anthony (Tony) Fazzari, who died October 30, 1995.

Surviving are two children, Carol English of Waynesburg and John Fazzari and wife Lee of Aurora, Ill., and two grandchildren, Andrew John Fazzari and Mark Alexander Fazzari.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Behm Funeral Homes Inc., 1477 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, Gregory P. Rohanna, supervisor, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, with the Rev. Valinda Custer officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to American Legion Post 954 Auxiliary of Jefferson. Chastity Ann Rettinger

Waynesburg College graduate was a volunteer

Chastity Ann Rettinger, 35, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009.

She was born July 2, 1973, in Maryland, and was raised in Waynesburg.

Mrs. Rettinger moved to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1997.

She graduated from Waynesburg College with a business degree and continued her education at Florida Metropolitan University, where she was studying for her CPA and received her MBA.

Mrs. Rettinger was on the board of directors for MAA Baseball and was team mom and treasurer of the Jacksonville Outlaws. She volunteered as a CCD teacher at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jacksonville.

Surviving are her parents, Danny and Vicky Scott; husband Michael Rettinger; two children, Zackery (age 13) and Justin (age 9) Rettinger; two sisters, Jennifer (Brian) Mathis of Chicago and Heidi (Dave) Shobe of Cumberland, Md.; three nieces and two nephews; a mother-in-law, Lura (Stan) Rettinger-Pagano; a brother-in-law, Charles (Lori) Rettinger; paternal grandparents Ray and Mary Scott; maternal grandparents John and Barbara Brant; and four aunts and four uncles.

Deceased is her father-in-law, Charles Rettinger.

Visitation will held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville. A Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jacksonville, with Father Daniel Cody officiating. William Shaffer

Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel retiree enjoyed hunting

William (Billy) Shaffer, 78, of Charleroi, died Monday, April 13, 2009, in the Monongahela Valley Hospital emergency room.

He was born August 17, 1930, in North Charleroi, a son of Francis and Garnet Palfrey Shaffer.

Mr. Shaffer was a member of Mary, Mother of the Church Parish and American Legion Post 22, both of Charleroi.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Shaffer retired after 37 years as a rigger foreman at open hearth of the Monessen plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening, especially growing roses.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Costanza Shaffer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dana J. (Joel) Rebovich of Perryopolis and Dawn A. (Jerry) Contino of Washington; three grandchildren, Justin M. and Craig William Rebovich and Chelsea Noelle Contino; and a brother, Robert C. (Janet) Shaffer of Rostraver Township.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Carl J. Spallino Funeral Home, 819 Fallowfield Avenue, Charleroi. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 17, in Mary, Mother of the Church, Charleroi, with the Rev. David Dzermejko officiating. William R. Kimmey

Former Green Tree landfill heavy equipment operator

William R. (Billy) Kimmey, 59, of Washington, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Washington County Health Center, Chartiers Township. He had been ill for several months.

He was born December 21, 1949, in Washington, a son of William Ross Kimmey of Washington and the late Orlanda Taylor Kimmey.

Mr. Kimmey was a graduate of McGuffey High School and was a former heavy equipment operator at the Green Tree landfill.

He was a member of the Slovak Club.

Surviving are four stepchildren, Ernie, Dawn, Kim and Michelle; and two sisters, Barbara Spohr of Macadoo and Betty Mundell of Washington.

Deceased are two sisters, Ella Mae Calvert and Margie Kimmey.

Charles Edward Alexy Jr.

March 26, 1943 – April 14, 2009

Charles Edward Alexy Jr. died Tuesday, April 14, 2009.

He was born March 26, 1943, in Washington, a son of Charles Edward Sr. and Clara Bof Alexy.

On October 14, 1972, he married Rebecca Ullom Taylor, who survives. After raising their four children in Washington, they moved to Deerfield Beach, Fla., where they enjoyed the last eight years.

Mr. Alexy was a 1961 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

He was a hard working and determined young man who worked his way from truck driver to executive vice president of General Cryogenics Corp. He later was employed by Weavertown Environmental Group and Crawford and Co. After relocating to South Florida, he was then co-owner of Class Action Support Service.

With his larger than life personality, he was a member of various clubs and organizations, including Arden Athletic Club, Fraternal Order of Bears, Order Italian Sons and Daughters of America and American Legion Post 162 of Deerfield Beach.

In Washington, he was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the church council and often served as an usher. For the past eight years, he found his new church family at Christ Church United Methodist in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he was involved in a weekly men’s Wesley Group, and he tried never to miss a service. He was a strong man of faith, and his family rests peacefully knowing that he is at home with the Lord today.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Scott (Melinda) Taylor and Christian Alexy; two daughters, Erin “E.J.” (Charles) Taylor Riggle and Meghan (Christopher) Alexy Broeman; four grandchildren, Mackenna Paige and Camden Rebecca Riggle and Katelyn Leigh and Kelley Bleier Taylor; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Deceased is a brother, Donald Alexy, who died in infancy.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m., the time of service, Saturday, April 18, in Piatt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, with the Rev. Kenneth Schott officiating. Interment will follow in Washington Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at graveside by Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. James David Pemberton

U.S. Army Vietnam veteran was United Airlines retiree

James David Pemberton, 67, of Willis, Texas, formerly of Commerce City, Colo., and Cokeburg, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009, in Triumph Hospital Northwest, Houston, Texas.

He and his twin brother, Alfred Pemberton, were born October 13, 1941, in Van Voorhis, sons of Alfred and Jean Rebecca Kifer Pemberton.

Mr. Pemberton was a Vietnam veteran, having served with the U.S. Army.

He retired from United Airlines in Denver, Colo.

Surviving are his stepmother, Nora Reed Pemberton of Tampa, Fla; two sisters, Erma Jean (Ross Barth) Shannon of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Jill (Larry) Day of Willis; a brother, Robert (Joyce) Pemberton of Tampa; a sister-in-law, Rose Ann Pemberton of Bainbridge, Ohio; 12 nieces and nephews; and 25 great-nieces and nephews.

He also leaves his best friends, Bob, Bev, Brian and Bia Benzel of Commerce City.

Chester Roy Powell

Weirton Steel Blast Furnace retiree was an outdoorsman

Chester Roy Powell, 83, of Burgettstown, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in his home.

He was born January 24, 1926, in Pine Grove, W.Va., a son of Irvin and Cora Elizabeth Satterfield Powell.

Mr. Powell retired from Weirton Steel Blast Furnace with 33 years of service.

When he was not working, he was known to be an outdoorsman, having loved to hunt and fish.

Mr. Powell was a member of Weirton Heights Church of Christ and Weirton Steel 25 Year Club.

Surviving are his loving wife, Audra I. Wells Powell, whom he married July 17, 1948; two sons, Carl F. and Barbara Powell of Burgettstown and Larry R. Powell of Weirton, W.Va.; a daughter, Linda Darlene Corwin of Burgettstown; a brother, Drexel Powell of Mannington, W.Va.; five grandchildren, April Simms, Christopher Powell, Brandy Powell Cooke, Ashley Powell O’Neal and Brandon Corwin; and six great-grandchildren.

Deceased are a son, James David Powell; a brother, Dale Powell; and sisters Alta Roberts, Luda Wilson and Gladys Fisher.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, 3219 Main Street, Weirton, where services will be held at 12:45 p.m. Friday, April 17, with Minister Steve Smithbauer presiding. William Woodburn

A.C. Dellovade retireeserved in the U.S. Navy

William “Jiggs” Woodburn, 66, of Front Royal, Va., formerly of Avella, died at 3:08 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Washington Hospital.

He was born December 12, 1942, in Avella, a son of William and Dorothy Mull Woodburn.

Mr. Woodburn was a 1962 graduate of Avella High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 567 in McDonald.

Mr. Woodburn had worked for Pfizer Alloy Metal for 25 years and A.C. Dellovade, retiring in 2006.

Surviving are a daughter, Shelly Woodburn of Avella; a son, William F. (Michelle) Woodburn of Avella; his companion, Barbara Ramey, with whom he made his home; four grandchildren, Jillian Weekley, Ryan Gross, Garitt Woodburn and Brooke Madison Woodburn; four brothers, Richard “Itsy” (Beatrice) Woodburn of Avella, Russell “Hop” (Estelle) Woodburn of Avella, Fredrick (Anna) Woodburn of Hickory and Roland “Woody” (Delphine) Woodburn of Wellsburg, W.Va.; and a sister, Doris (Wayne) Peterson of Carmichaels.

Annette Lynn Shuba

Former member of Trinity Bible Fellowship

Annette Lynn Shuba, 48, of Chandlersville, Ohio, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in The Morrison House, Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care, Zanesville, Ohio, following a three-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

She was born October 24, 1960, in Waynesburg, a daughter of Shirley Ball Craig of Washington and the late Edmond Craig.

Mrs. Shuba had worked at Washington Honda-Subaru for three years and, for the past year, worked as a server at Denny’s Restaurant in Zanesville.

She was Protestant and a former member of Trinity Bible Fellowship in Washington.

Mrs. Shuba was active with her family in Relay For Life in Columbus. She was known to many as “Mama Shuba.”

On August 3, 1979, she married Michael John Shuba Jr., who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Michael J. Shuba III of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Cherie Shuba of Columbus and Ashley Shuba of Zanesville; two brothers, John Craig and Scott Craig, both of Washington; and a sister, Susan Dorazio of Washington.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in William G. Robert W. Greenwood

Former Cumberland Mine coal miner

Robert W. Greenwood, 69, of Dilliner, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, in Cloverdale Personal Care Home, Masontown.

He was born December 7, 1939, in Briar Hill, a son of Frank K. Greenwood and Laura Daugherty Greenwood Gladys.

Mr. Greenwood was a 1958 graduate of Mapletown High School.

He worked as a coal miner in Cumberland Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers of America and Fraternal Order of Eagles 1932 in Point Marion.

Surviving are two daughters, Tina L. Pozywio of Valparaiso, Ind., and Tammy Lynn Linden and husband Ken of Greensboro, and two grandchildren, Dustin Cox and Crystal Cox.

Deceased is his sister, Lillian May Olsen.
