Mystery Photo No. 22
Although clues abound in this old photo from the Observer-Reporter archives, its location and date are a mystery to us. We are hoping some of our readers can help us solve this puzzle.
A group poses in front of a line of shops, the most prominent being a Greek café. The window lettering at top is in Greek characters and would be pronounced something like “kafenion ellaz.” Below, the lettering reads, “cigars and tobacco, candies and ice cream, soft drinks of all kinds, Greek (last work obscured).”
The next shop, in front of which sits a lone woman, also offers soft drinks and ice cream. The sign at the top of that building designates it as “Miners Hall Local No. 1826.” There is a four-digit number above it – possibly the date of construction – but it is obscured by telephone wires.
If you can identify the date and location of this photo, or provide any information about the people, the shops or the union hall, email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at email@example.com, or leave a message for him with your telephone number by calling 724-222-2200, extension 2400.
With any luck, we’ll solve this Mystery Photo and publish the solution next Monday.
