Two killed on county roads
An Independence Township man and an East Finley Township woman were killed Sunday in separate one-vehicle accidents.
Clarence Ernest Dudley, 26, of Donahoe Street, was pronounced dead at 8:25 a.m. by Washington County Coroner Tim Warco. He died of multiple injuries.
Grace Katherine Sauerzopf, 21, of Burnsville Ridge Road, was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m. by Warco. She died of head injuries.
The crashes are being investigated by state police.
According to Warco, Dudley was traveling alone on Route 50 when he approached a right bend near Gardner Street and lost control of the vehicle, which crossed the center line and went over a guardrail and embankment of the eastbound lane.
Dudley was ejected from the vehicle, Warco said. The exact time of the incident remains undetermined. Police were made aware of the crash by a passing motorist, the coroner said.
Avella fire Chief Eric Temple said his department was called about 6:52 a.m. for a report of debris on the road near the Avella Sportsmens Club.
“When we got there, we found clothes, toys and car parts all over the place,” Temple said. Firefighters checked the area and found a small car over the hill. They found the body of a young man who apparently had been thrown from the car.
Temple said it is not known when the crash occurred, although some residents of the area reported hearing the sound of a crash.
It is the same location in which a young Washington man was killed earlier this year. Temple said there is a bend on that stretch of road.
In August, 19-year-old Tyler James Roy was killed when his pickup truck crashed off Avella Road at Gardner Road in the township. Roy also was ejected from his vehicle. Avella firefighters found him under his truck when they arrived at the scene. Roy’s vehicle also was spotted by a passing motorist.
Sauerzopf also was traveling alone at the time of her accident, Warco said.
According to Warco, Sauerzopf was driving south on Burnsville Ridge Road when she left a bend in the road and lost control of her car, traveling off the road before crossing the road, traveling along a hillside and coming to rest overturned on the road.
