Trail bridge replacement discussed by council
McMURRAY - Mark Imgrund of the Montour Trail Council on Monday asked Peters Township Council for approval to proceed with the replacement of a bridge to connect the trail over Valley Brook Road near Route 19. Bids for a new bridge are expected by Nov. 30 with, as Imgrund said, a “notice to proceed soon after.”
Imgrund said a bridge, similar to one that was recently opened across Clifton Road in Bethel Park, will be the most cost-efficient way to connect the trail across Valley Brook Road in Peters Township. A similar design would be less expensive than other structures by $200,000 to $300,000.
Council member Frank Arcuri was not enthusiastic about the style, calling the Bethel Park bridge “unattractive,” but added, “I won’t be walking across it.”
Michael Silvestri, township manager, said it would ideal for construction on the bridge to occur during the planned redesign and improvement to the Valley Brook ramp project. During the project, Valley Brook Road would be closed to traffic for about two years. No date was given for either project.
Council also recommended that the township’s zoning hearing board uphold the township ordinance regulating colors on digital signs. Owners of the new location of SP Flooring in the former Ethan Allen furniture building on Washington Road, are asking for a multicolor sign as requested by a floor-covering company of which SP Flooring is a franchisee. The free-standing sign is grandfathered in and is less than the amount of square footage allowed by ordinance. However, the ordinance prohibits multicolor digital signs.
