Greenbriar employees aid 2000 Turkeys

What’s better than pennies from heaven?

Pennies from Greenbriar Treatment Center.

For the second year, employees of Greenbriar Treatment Center in Washington collected pennies to donate to 2000 Turkeys.

On Friday, the center – determined to do its part to provide financially strapped Washington County residents with a happy Thanksgiving – presented the 2000 Turkeys campaign with a check for $425 (the 2000 Turkeys board would have accepted the pennies, but is glad Greenbriar sent in the check instead).

That donation, along with several individual and corporate contributions, brings the 2012 campaign total to $57,363.20. 2000 Turkeys provides Thanksgiving meals for Washington County families who are underemployed or unemployed, and who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner. Every $10 donation provides a Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings for family of four. 2000 Turkeys is the largest single fundraiser on behalf of the Greater Washington County Food Bank and its neighboring pantries. The food bank has established qualification guidelines for families who receive the Thanksgiving dinners.

Jamie Clark, financial clerk for Greenbriar, came up with the idea last year, and Greenbriar employees jumped aboard. “Nobody thinks about pennies. They end up at the bottom of your purse, but they add up so quickly,” said Clark. “I’ll go throughout the building asking if anyone has pennies, and there’s one gentleman who, everytime I ask, throws in a dollar.”

A former Girl Scout leader, Clark said she encouraged her troop, and her own children, to participate in community service activities.

“I brought up my kids to know that there are people out there who are less fortunate than we are. We don’t know how blessed we are. When I mail in that check to 2000 Turkeys, I know it helps people here.”

Appearing at WJPA Radio station Friday to present checks to 2000 Turkeys were Gus Bauer of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, Mike Kazmarski of the United Labor Committee of Washington County, and Mike Lucas, first assistant district attorney of Washington County.

“Any member out there or nonmember who rides motorcycles, get your wallet out and send a check. Put a couple dollars on a check and send it in here,” said Bauer, who noted the Red Knights donation was raised from the annual Red Ride. “It’s a worthy cause.”

The goal is to raise $100,000 and to feed the 18,200 people in Washington County who are in need. Last year, 2000 Turkeys provided Thanksgiving meals for more than 4,000 households.

To donate to the 2000 Turkeys campaign, please send checks, payable to “2000 Turkeys,” to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, PA 15301. Thanks to the following, who generously donated to the 2000 Turkeys campaign during the week:
