Chris Dewberry sank a three-point field goal with 27 seconds to play to cap a second-half rally and give West Virginia Wesleyan a 67-66 victory over California in a non-conference game.
Cal, which led by eight at halftime, took a 66-64 lead on two free throws by Anthony Lytle with 50 seconds to play. Dewberry then hit his game-winner for the only lead West Virginia Wesleyan (2-1) would have in the second half.
Dewberry finished with 11 points in 13 minutes. T.J. Thompson scored 16 points and Noah Cottrill chipped in with 15. Quentin Harding led the Vulcans (1-1) with 16 points. Mitchell Weedon added 12 and Keith Lowe 10.
Waynesburg 72, Penn State-Altoona 60: Waynesburg built an 18-point lead in the second half, then had to hold off a rally by Penn State-Altoona before taking a 72-60 victory in a non-conference game in Altoona.
The Yellow Jackets (2-2) led 66-60 with 50 seconds to play but secured the win by sinking six free throws, two each by Tim Kaiser, Jacob Fleegle and Casey Hope. Waynesburg led 54-36 with 11:49 to play.
Thomas Ellis and E.J. Coleman each scored 12 points for Waynesburg, which led 36-25 at halftime. Fleegle had 11 and Hope 10. Kurt Bonnet had seven points and nine rebounds.
Jonathan Ross had a game-high 28 points and Jordan Wells chipped in with 12 points for Penn State-Altoona (1-2).
Wash & Jeff 81, Muskingum 79: Zach Bellhy made a twisting layup with 1.3 seconds to play to break a tie game and give Washington & Jefferson its first victory of the season, 81-79, over Muskingum in a non-conference game.
Bellhy’s game-winner came after Dave Brown hit a three-point field goal with 16 seconds to play for Muskingum that tied the game, 79-79.
Bellhy, a Fort Cherry graduate, finished with 19 points and was one of three players in double figures for the Presidents (1-4). His brother, Nate Bellhy, tossed in a game-high 32 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Mitch Locher pitched in with 10 points.
Muskingum (0-4) held a 38-36 halftime lead and it ballooned to 43-36 two minutes into the second half. But Zach Bellhy gave W&J the lead for good, 52-51, with a three-pointer with 12:21 to play.
Five players scored in double figures for Muskingum, led by Brown’s 17 points. Clay Owings and Logan Kimble each had 12, Michael Klamo 11 and Reed Simpson 10.
Mt. Union 72, Waynesburg 56: Three players scored in double figures, led by Rose LaMattina, and Mt. Union outscored Waynesburg by 11 in the second half to take a 72-56 victory in a non-conference game Saturday at Marisa Fieldhouse.
Tierney Allen added 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the fourth-ranked Purple Raiders, who are 4-0. Aly Daniel added 11 points.
Hayden Giuliani led the Yellow Jackets (1-3) with 16 points and Brittany Spencer tossed in 11 points and had six rebounds. Waynesburg led 13-4 seven minutes into the game but ended up trailing at halftime, 28-23, as both teams shot poorly. Mt. Union finished at 31 percent (26 of 83) and Waynesburg was at 28 percent (19 of 68).
La Roche 83, Wash & Jeff 70: The Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team committed 28 turnovers that led to 31 points for La Roche in an 83-70 loss of a non-conference game at Henry Memorial Center.
W&J also missed 11 free throws, going 20-for-31 at the line, in suffering its first loss of the season.
The Redhawks (2-1) had four players in double figures led by LaShauna Brothers’ 17 points off the bench. Jessica Pitts added 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for La Roche, which shot 48 percent from the field (31 of 65).
La Roche never trailed after taking a 27-15 lead midway through the first half. The closest W&J got in the second half was 48-44, but La Roche went on a 16-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Chelsea Apke led W&J (3-1) with 21 points and five steals. Ashley Mikelonis added 14 points in 20 minutes.
