WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg’s High Street was bustling with shoppers who came out for the annual Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful Downtown Holiday Open House Friday. The oftentimes sleepy borough was alive as carolers, street musicians and horse-drawn carriages full of families made its way down the streets.

“It has been just beautiful, fantastic,” said Connie Hart, event coordinator for the Waynesburg Chamber of Commerce. “Every door we went into was packed, and the Canstruction was a big hit.”

About a dozen sculptures made of cans and other food products were displayed in store fronts along the street, created by local artists for the Corner Cupboard Food Bank. The open house and Canstruction were sponsored by Consol Energy.

Waynesburg Borough Mayor Blair Zimmerman called the event “the best yet.”

“It is the best we have ever had. The vendors are doing well. I have spoken with my police, and there have been no issues,” Zimmerman said. “The temperature is perfect. It’s just a perfect night. I can remember it being busy downtown like this on Saturday nights when I was a kid.”

Waynesburg Music store owners, Don and Pandora Pruse, who are in their second year of business in the borough, said they were really happy with the event.

“I think it is better this year than last year,” Pandora said. “People really like the art sculpture that Don’s guitar student, Zack Kinsell, did of a guitar and amplifier.”

The traffic inside the store was so busy that Don has just two spots left for instruction in his schedule.

“My lessons are completely filled up except for those two spots. I sold a guitar, an amp, strings, and it has been great, fantastic,” Don said.

From the burn barrels on every corner to Ebenezer Scrooge’s image projected onto the side of a building, it was a fun and festive evening in downtown Waynesburg.
