County selected to received EFSP grant

November 30, 2012

Greene County has been selected to receive an award under Phase 30 of the Emergency Food and Shelter Programs in the amount of $13,668.

The selection was made by the national board governed by Federal Emergency Management Agency that consisted of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA and United Way World Wide, which will provide the administrative staff and function as fiscal agent.

The board was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the county.

A local board made up of representatives from the Greene County United Way, Catholic Charities, Community Action Southwest, Corner Cupboard Food Bank, Greene County Human Services, Salvation Army and Waynesburg Ministerial Association, will determine how the funds awarded to Greene County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs, run by local service organizations in the area.

The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds under this phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the national board, local organizations chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Qualifying applicants are urged to apply.

Greene County has previously distributed emergency food and shelter funds to the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Community Action Southwest, Corner Cupboard Food Bank and Salvation Army.

Public/private voluntary organizations interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Barb Wise, executive director at Greene County United Way, 748 East High Street, Waynesburg, or call 724-852-1009. Applications must be received no later than Dec. 17.
