U.S. Steel retiree, Air Force vet born in Spraggs
Larry W. Phillips, 65, of South Amherst, formerly of Lorain, both in Ohio, passed away Monday, December 3, 2012, in MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio, after a sudden illness.
He was born February 16, 1947, in Spraggs.
Mr. Phillips was a 1966 graduate of Elyria (Ohio) High School.
He worked for U.S. Steel at the Lorain Pipe Mill, retiring in February 2012. He was also a deputy with Lorain County Sheriff’s Department in 1979, serving 10 years on road patrol.
Mr. Phillips was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Elyria Eagles 431 and Lorain AMVETS Post 47.
Surviving are sons Todd J.A. Phillips of Tucson, Ariz., and Tad W. (Shelby) Phillips of Vermilion, Ohio; grandsons Jonathan, David and Cooper Phillips; granddaughter Laura Vasi; and sisters Linda (Max) Jones of LaGrange, Ohio, Ruth (Larry) Mecera of Carmichaels and Sandra (William) Marshall of Valrico, Fla.
Deceased are his parents, Stanley W. and Verna E. Moore Phillips Dragan, and stepfather John Dragan in 1999.
The family will have a celebration of life gathering in his honor from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15, in Spraggs United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
