Wash High dealt first loss at holiday tourney

Darrious Carter had a double-double and three other players scored in double figures to power Indiana past Washington, 66-57, in the West Allegheny Christmas Tournament.

Carter had 18 points and 20 rebounds for Indiana (6-1), who outscored the Prexies 36-29 in the second half. Riley Stapleton tossed in 15 points, Blake Shields added 14 points, and Kevin Jack had 10.

Josh Wise scored a game-high 26 points for the Prexies (6-1), who lost for the first time in seven games. Jaylin Kelly chipped in with 13.

South Fayette 59, Blackhawk 49: Senior point guard Evan Bonnaure scored 17 of the South Fayette boys basketball team’s 19 points in the third quarter, part of a 13-point edge in the frame that helped the Lions earn a 59-49 victory Thursday over Blackhawk in the C.J. Betters Tournament at the Community College of Beaver County.

Bonnaure finished with 25 points and made seven 3-pointers. He made nine of his 16 shots, including seven of 10 from three-point range.

C.J. Rudisill helped out with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Zach Challingsworth had five points and four steals off the bench.

Tyler Engle led Blackhawk (3-4) with 12 points.

South Fayette (5-1) will play New Castle today.

Carmichaels 60, Mapletown 50: Brandon Lawless scored 22 points and Sean Smoggie added 18 and three 3-pointers, as the Mikes (6-1) moved into the championship game of their own King Coal Lions Tournament with a 60-50 win over Mapletown.

Dereck Riggleman had four 3-pointers and finished with 28 points for Mapletown (0-7), but Carmichaels outscored the Maples, 24-14, in the final quarter to erase a one-point deficit at halftime. Kevin Ridgely contributed 10 points for Mapletown.

Trinity 68, Northgate 59: Trinity pulled away from Northgate with a strong fourth quarter to take a 68-59 victory in the Trinity Christmas Tournament.

Corey Hunsberger scored 24 points for the Hillers (8-2), who had a 21-14 edge in the final minutes. Christian Koroly poured in 17 points, Berton Miller added 11 and Jared Deep 10.

Paymon Russell led Northgate (5-2) with 17 points and Justin Parra chipped in with 12.

Jeannette 73: Monessen 46: Julian Batts and Duke Brown combined for 47 points to power Jeannette to a 73-46 victory over Monessen in the Gateway Christmas Tournament.

Batts scored 24 and Brown 23 for the Jayhawks (8-0).

Ty Yuille scored 12 points for the Greyhounds (0-7).

Beaver 59, McGuffey 46: Aaron Barlow scored a game-high 29 points to pace Beaver to a 59-46 victory over McGuffey in the Mohawk Christmas Tournament.

Austin Logan added eight points for Beaver (8-0).

Taylor Pasquariello led McGuffey (4-4) with 14 points and Jesse McKee added 10.

Peters Township 68, Mercyhurst Prep 46: Gabe Pritz scored a game-high 23 points to lead Peters Township to a 68-46 victory over Mercyhurst Prep in the North Allegheny Christmas tournament.

Joe Brucker had 12 points on four three-point field goals for the Indians (4-4).

Carl Anderson and Alex Borges each scored nine for Mercyhurst Prep (2-4).

The Indians play in the championship game at 8 tonight.

Yough 54, Bentworth 34: Ben D’Amico and Dom Miele combined for 35 points to propel Yough to a 54-34 victory over Bentworth in the Charleroi Christmas Tournament.

D’Amico led the way for the 3-5 Cougars with 18 points and Miele added 17.

Cody Levine paced the Bearcats (4-3), who play Sunday at 5 p.m. in a losers’ bracket game, with 14 points.

Butler 54, Canon-McMillan 46: Butler rallied from a one-point deficit at halftime with a strong third quarter to knock off Canon-McMillan, 54-4-6, at the Trinity Christmas Tournament.

Adam Krause scored 13 points for Butler (3-5), which outscored CM 17-5 in the third quarter.

Seth Combs and Sam Bohn each tossed in 11 points for the Big Macs (4-5).

In other games: Charleroi defeated Southmoreland, 77-56, Seton-La Salle beat Ringgold, 84-36; Jefferson-Morgan played Beth-Center; and California played Belle Vernon. Details on those games were not made available to the Observer-Reporter.

Girls results

McGuffey 77, Brownsville 35: Sammie Weiss had a triple-double to lead McGuffey in its own tournament, finishing with 35 points, 15 steals and 11 rebounds during a lopsided win over Brownsville.

Rachel Czulewicz added 12 points for McGuffey, which improved to 6-1.

Marrisa Boatright had a team-high 13 points for Brownsville (2-4).

Connellsville 41, Waynesburg 28: Lyndsey Huhn led all scorers with 10 points, but Waynesburg dropped its Laurel Highlands Christmas Clash opener, 41-28. Nobody reached double figures for Connellsville, which improved to 3-5. Maria Merendino scored a team-high nine points, and Brittany Craig added eight.

Besides Huhn, Kerilyn Wilkins contributed eight points for the Raiders (2-6). Waynesburg will play Carmichaels today at 11 a.m.

Upper St. Clair 61, Belle Vernon 58: Elayna Kaylor had 19 points and Jordan Serio added 18 to lead Upper St. Clair to a 61-58 victory over Belle Vernon in the Laurel Highlands Christmas Clash. The Panthers improved to 5-2 with the win.

Jessica Slagus finished with 24 points for Belle Vernon (5-2), and her younger sister Kaitlyn chipped in with 12. Belle Vernon’s Tiernie Singleton and Upper St. Clair’s Jordan Serio each contributed 10 points.

Belle Vernon will play Laurel Highlands at 12:45 p.m. today.

Jefferson-Morgan 51, Geibel 31: Ally Bogden scored a game-high 17 points to lead Jefferson-Morgan over Geibel 51-31 in the Gators’ own tournament. Ashley Faddis added 11 points for the Rockets, who improved to 3-4.

Peyton McIntyre led Geibel (1-6) with 14 points.

Central Valley 44, South Fayette 34: Madi Rowan scored 17 points and Central Valley held South Fayette to six points in the middle two quarters to take a 44-34 victory in the C.J. Betters Tournament at CCBC.

Sierra Barrett added 15 for CV (6-0).

Kristen Hardt paced South Fayette (3-3) with 10 points. The Lions play New Brighton today at noon.

Carmichaels 49, Frazier 29: Morgan Berardi tossed in a game-high 17 points to lead Carmichaels to a 49-29 victory over Frazier in the Laurel Highlands Christmas Tournament.

Amanda Brown chipped in with 14 and Caroline Cree added 10 for the Mikes (7-1), who play Waynesburg at 11 a.m. today.

Hannah Kline had 15 points for the Commodores (3-2), who were outscored 26-12 over the second half.

Bentworth 66, Mapletown 10: Four players scored in double figures to help Bentworth to a 66-10 victory over Mapletown in the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.

Taylor Pompei led the Bearcats (3-5) with 17 points. Reilly Skerbetz poured in 12 points, Karli Kubincanek added 11 and Catie Lukich scored 10.

Renee Dingle led the Maples (0-4) with four points.

OLSH 60, West Greene 13: Tia Scuilli pumped in 13 points to pace OLSH to a 60-13 victory over West Greene in the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.

Bri Van Volkenburg added 10 points for OLSH (6-1), which led 31-9 at halftime.

Madison Raber scored seven points to key West Greene (5-2).

In other games: Avella lost to Bishop Canevin, 75-19; Charleroi beat Trinity Christian 58-27; Brentwood beat California, 60-26; Slippery Rock topped Peters Township, 46-37; Carmichaels beat Frazier, 49-29; Wash High dropped a 61-21 decision to Kennedy Catholic; and Burgettstown fell, 47-22, to Beaver.
