J-M’s Conti wins Southmoreland title
Jefferson-Morgan’s Dustin Conti won the 182-pound title to highlight the area wrestlers’ efforts at Southmoreland Holiday Classic when he earned a 7-1 decision over Terrell Fields of Valley.
Austin McDermitt of Burgettstown reached the 106-pound final, but he suffered an 11-2 major decision to Austin Griffiths of Southmoreland.
Same story for Charleroi’s Nick Gavazzi and Beth-Center’s Jason Stay. Gavazzi made it to the 138-pound final and dropped a 3-1 decision to Noah Tarr of Blairsville, while Stay was defeated by Drew Gartland of Northern Bedford by the score of 9-1.
Butler won the team title with 193 points. Mt. Pleasant, despite not having anyone in the finals, took second at 148, and Greensville tied Northern Bedford for third with 145 points.
South Fayette girls swimmers shine
Maddie Bartrug won two individual events and swam on two victorious relay teams to lead the South Fayette girls swim and dive team to the title at the West Allegheny Christmas Swimming and Diving Invitational Thursday and Friday.
Bartrug finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.09 and was also victorious in the 100 free in 54.34.
South Fayette’s 200 medley relay team of Mary Rosati, Morgan Fink, Bartrug and Tiana Marrese placed first with a time of 1:53.69. Bartrug, Rosati, Sydney Briner and Fink won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:45.32.
Other first-place finishers included diver Gracie Klimek (207.00), Rosati in the 500 free (5:16.05) and Fink in the 100 backstroke (1:00.35).
The Lions totaled 332 points, Indiana 249 and West Allegheny 262. West Allegheny had won this event the previous two years en route to garnering WPIAL Class AA championships.
The South Fayette boys finished second with 249 points, as Indiana cruised to first place with 398.
Ryne Fromholzer of South Fayette postyed first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:51.18) and 500 free (5:08.29), while diver Stephen Zombek was victorious in the 1-meter with a score of 211.45.
