Cal women hold off D&E

California University built a 14-point halftime lead, then held off a second-half rally by Davis & Elkins to earn a 60-55 victory in a non-conference game at the Convocation Center Sunday.

The Vulcans improved to 7-2 with a perfect 4-0 record against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference members. Davis & Elkins falls to 4-5 overall and saw a three-game win streak snapped.

Ryah Gadson had a career-high 14 points off the bench. She made 5-of-9 attempts from the floor, including 2 of 4 from three-point range, in 18 minutes. Gadson has scored a combined 33 points in the last three games after scoring 24 points in the first six games.

Emma Mahady contributed 11 points and Stephanie Michael poured in nine points, handed out three assists and had four steals for Cal,which led 38-24 at halftime.

Jorden Lykes paced D&E (4-5) with 15 points and Alicia Lentz chipped in with 12 and Sharmaine Baker 10.

Wash & Jeff 71, Ohio Wesleyan 66: Washington & Jefferson College held Ohio Wesleyan to seven points over the final four minutes of the game and sank eight free throws in that time to secure a 71-66 victory over Ohio Wesleyan in the Hoops for Hope Basketball Classic.

Chelsea Apke had a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Presidents (8-3).Valerie Dunlap scored 13 points and Kara Seamon and Emily Abraham each added 12.

Apke and Seamon were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Seamon added six assists and four rebounds for the Presidents, who won both games of the classic tournament format.

Four players reached double figures for the Battling Bishops (1-11), led by Sarah McQuade and Mary Corbett, who each scored 14 points. Emily Julius had 13 and Hanna Fedorka 10.

Men’s results

Tiffin 80, California 71: Joe Graessle scored a game-high 29 points to pace Tiffin to an 80-71 victory over California in a non-conference game.

Graessle also had four assists and two steals. Mike Boan chipped in with 13 and Isaiah Twine and Cody Dennison each had 11 points for Tiffin (5-6).

Keith Lowe paced the Vulcans (4-5) with 24 points and Tynell Fortune added 12. Anthony Lyle and Jeremy Posey each scored 10 points.
