Washington County jail warden retiring
Joseph Pelzer, Washington County jail warden since 1987, notified the county commissioners and prison board that he intends to retire next month.
Pelzer said his retirement will be effective Feb. 22, which happens to be the birthday of George Washington, the county’s namesake.
He was the last warden of the old jail and the first and only warden of the Washington County Correctional Facility, which was built in 1995.
Pelzer started working for the county as a part-time correctional officer in 1984, then became a counselor and later, deputy warden under Robert Poland.
