KUTZTOWN – If you think free throws aren’t important, then you haven’t talked today to the men’s basketball teams at California and Kutztown universities.

California made 19 of 20 free throws Friday night and held on for a 79-71 victory over Kutztown in a PSAC game.

While Cal (4-2, 4-6) can look at its spectacular free-throw shooting as the key to victory, Kutztown (2-4, 3-9) can blame the loss on the its performance at the charity stripe. Kutztown made only nine of 23 free throws, including only five of 15 attempts in the second half.

Cal took control of the game with a 12-1 run late that opened up a 70-61 lead with less than three minutes remaining. The Vulcans then protected the lead at the free-throw line.

Keith Lowe had another big game for Cal, scoring a game-high 23 points. Mitchell Weedon provided plenty of support, scoring 20 points, including four during the key late-game surge. Tynell Fortune had 12 points and five assists, and Jake Jacubec came off the bench to score 11 points.

Abdul King and Micah Fraction each scored 17 points for Kutztown.
