Man formally arraigned in deadly shooting

An Upper St. Clair man was formally arraigned Friday on homicide charges for killing a Washington man in a grocery store parking lot in October.

Brandon D. Thomas, 30, is accused of shooting and killing Vaughn Simonelli on Oct. 18 outside the Shop ’n Save supermarket at Beau Street and Jefferson Avenue in Washington after the two men had some type of confrontation while driving in separate vehicles to the store.

Thomas was formally arraigned on the homicide charge Friday before Washington County Judge Katherine B. Emery. First Assistant District Attorney Michael Lucas said the prosecution is not seeking the death penalty against Thomas.

Thomas is being held in the county jail without bond. However, Emery is considering a request by Thomas’ attorney to set bond so he could be released to await trial. The defense claims Thomas acted in self-defense.
