California knocks off Belle Vernon
Austin Wingo finished with 18 points to lead three players in double-figures, as California earned a 61-52 victory over Belle Vernon in a non-section boys basketball game on Wednesday.
Evan Patterson had 17 points, Tanner Huffman 15, and Brian Fisher contributed nine for California, which improved to 10-1.
The Trojans outscored Belle Vernon, 36-19, over the second and third quarters to pull away.
Jason Capco scored 19 points for the Leopards (2-10).
Bentworth 52, Mapletown 47: Cody Levine had 28 points to lead all scorers during Bentworth’s non-section win over Mapletown, 52-47 at home. Chris Blackburn added 16 points for Bentworth, which went 15 of 20 from the free throw line to improve to 5-6.
Mapletown got 18 points from Dereck Riggleman, but they werren’t enough as the Maples fell to 2-9 on the season.
Carmichaels 73, Frazier 42: Brandon Lawless had 31 points and Carmichaels scored 30 points in the third quarter during a 73-42 route of Frazier. Sean Smoggie contributed 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and Josh Mundell finished with 12 for Carmichaels, which improved to 10-2 with the win.
Paul Pellick led Frazier (1-8) with 10 points.
Burgettstown 61, Western Beaver 47: Burgettstown had just four players score, but three were in double figures, as the Blue Devils downed Western Beaver, 61-47, in a non-section game.
Jonathan Sabo had 22 points, Josh Mack 18 points and 15 rebounds and Ryan Glover 16 points and nine rebounds for the Blue Devils (6-7), who trailed 40-37 before closing the game on a 24-7 run.
Nick Miller led Western Beaver (3-8) with 23 points.
McGuffey 55, Albert Galatin 30: Darrell Briggs and Caleb Reihner scored 14 points each as McGuffey defeated Albert Galatin, 55-30, in a non-section game.
Taylor Pasquariello added 10 points for the Highlanders (6-7).
Josh Zidek led Albert Galatin (0-11) with 10 points.
Carmichaels 48, Frazier 41: Carmichaels closed the game with eight straight points to erase a one-point deficit and snag a 48-41 non-section win over Frazier.
Mallory Stajnrajh put Carmichaels in front to stay on a putback with 1:48 to go.
Morgan Berardi finished with a game-high 23 points for the Mikes (11-1). Amanda Brown added 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
Lauren Timko led Frazier (4-6) with 16 points.
