Wild Things sign two pitchers

  • January 21, 2013

The Washington Wild Things added two pitchers to their staff for this season: right-hander Cole Brand and left-hander Matt Phillips.

Brand, a native of Cleveland, Tenn., spent three seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals’ system. He split the 2012 season between the Gulf Coast League Cardinals and the Johnson City Cardinals. Combined, he had a 2-0 record with a 2.97 ERA in 21 games, all in relief. Brand was picked in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft by St. Louis.

Phillips, from Orcutt, Calif., was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and pitched in the team’s affiliate in the GCL that year. He had a 3-0 record and 0.78 ERA in 12 games, 23 innings, all in relief.

He missed the 2011 season with an injury and made just one appearance last season with the Abilene Prairie Dogs of the North American Baseball League.
