West Greene to consider school closing vote
ROGERSVILLE – West Greene School Board expects to vote officially next month to close the district’s two elementary schools once construction of the proposed new elementary center is completed in 2014.
The board earlier began the process of closing the Springhill-Freeport and Graysville elementary schools. Public hearings on the closings, as required by state law, were held last February.
The district plans to construct a new elementary addition at the middle-senior high school and consolidate all grades at one location.
Board solicitor Barbara Graham told the board Thursday that it probably would be voting officially to close the buildings next month, as it proceeds through the process. The motion to close the buildings would be approved prior to the board awarding contracts for construction of the new elementary addition.
The district plans to seek bids for the $15 million construction project this spring, which would allow work to begin this summer. The new addition is expected to be completed in August 2014.
In other business, the board approved a three-year contract with the district’s new director of facilities, Gregory Carey.
Carey was hired by the board last month at a salary of $50,000 to replace Mike Pierson. The board voted in October not to extend Pierson’s contract. Carey will start in the district Feb. 1.
Amy Keeler, director of food services reported kitchens at the middle-senior high and Springhill-Freeport received an unannounced inspection from the state Department of Agriculture on Jan. 16 and both kitchens received excellent reports with no violations.
The board approved Tim Barnes as the student senate sponsor for the 2012-13 school year and Cody Rush to work with the director of technology for two days a week during the second semester.
The board approved two teacher professional development requests: one for Rebecca McCollum to attend a Marine Corps educator workshop in Parris Island, N.C., Feb. 5 to 8, and the other for Jeremy Olisar to attend the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association annual conference in Erie April 18 to 20.
The board voted to approve a request by head football coach John Coss and assistant coaches to attend the Glazier Football Clinic in Atlantic City, N.J., from Feb. 28 to March 2.
