Wrestling roundup: Johnston pin wins for West Greene
Needing a pin to advance West Greene in the WPIAL Class AA team tournament, 145-pounder Matt Johnston delivered, recording a fall to give the Pioneers to a 37-36 victory over Derry in their fifth-place match in Section 2-AA Wednesday night.
The Pioneers rallied from a 36-24 deficit in the final three bouts, getting a decision from Wade Blackmon at 132, a major decision from Tyler Gilbert at 138 and Johnston’s fall to advance into Monday’s WPIAL team tournament.
Sheldon Phillips also had a pin for West Greene, while Dalton Wildman picked up a win by injury default.
Jacob Hayman and Jarrett Dorazio had pins for Derry.
Waynesburg 39, Montour 33: Waynesburg jumped out to a 20-0 lead after four bouts and held on for a 39-33 victory over Montour in the fifth-place match in Section 4-AAA.
Logan Henderson and Shawn Wilson recorded pins, while Cole Rush and A.C. Headlee both had major decisions to give the Raiders a lead they would not relenquish.
Michael Heasley and Cody Tanner also recorded pins for Waynesburg, which advances to Monday’s WPIAL team tournament.
Tyler Kim, Roland Ganley and Austin Ganley had pins for Montour.
Avella 47, South Side Beaver 21: Avella won six of the first seven weight classes – four by fall and two via forfeit – and cruised to a 47-21 victory over visiting Avella in the Section 1-AA fifth-place match.
Brian Gordon (152) got the match off to a good start for Avella with a first-period fall, and Shawn Carl (160) and Derek Allen (195) and heavyweight Jake Temple also produced pins that staked the Eagles to a 36-6 lead. Temple’s pin came in only 15 seconds.
SSB closed to within 47-21 before Nick Kusich (138) and Dakota Humphrey (145) closed the match with a fall and technical fall, respectively, for Avella.
Peters Township 34, Belle Vernon 31: After falling behind 22-15, Peters Township rallied to win five of the final seven bouts to knock off Belle Vernon in the 2-AAA championships at Connellsville to advance to the championship match.
Lucas Cervenak had a pin for the Indians at heavyweight.
Connellsville 48, Peters Township 17: Connellsville dominated the middle weights en route to a Section 2-AAA championship with a 48-17 win over Peters Township.
Connellsville won the 138-220 weight classes.
Peters Township picked up decisions by Phil Mary (120), Tyler Buckiso (126), Italo Merante (132) and Lucas Cerevanek (heavyweight).
