A Smith Township man being processed on assault and other charges broke free from a holding cell at the township police station Saturday afternoon and was found sitting at a nearby bar, having a beer.

Timothy Bonner, 40, of 312 Vance Drive, Langeloth, was charged by Smith police with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, harassment, criminal mischief, defiant trespass, flight to avoid prosecution, disorderly conduct, public drunkenness and escape.

Police were called about 4:45 p.m. to the home of Penny Speers, 312 Vance, for a man causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Speers told police Bonner was tearing up the house.

Officer Derek Dayoub told Bonner to sit down and give police his identification. Bonner started making derogatory comments to Dayoub and Officer Dean Casciola. When the officers tried to take Bonner into custody, he struggled with the officers and kicked at Dayoub as the officer tried to handcuff him. Dayoub suffered a finger injury.

Speers told police Bonner tried to take her tractor, damaging it and rendering it inoperable. She told police Bonner had taken several Vicodin pills and drank a half-bottle of vodka. Bonner reportedly started throwing things when she told him to leave.

When the officers put Bonner in the holding cell to type the paperwork on the charges, they removed his handcuffs and belt. The officers heard a loud bang and checked to find Bonner running out the back door after knocking the cell door off its hinges. Police received information Bonner was at a nearby bar and found him sitting there, drinking a beer.

Bonner was arraigned before District Judge Gary Havelka and placed in the Washington County jail on $10,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 5 before Havelka.
