Small college basketball: Cal’s big comeback beats Clarion

Senior guard Keith Lowe scored 26 points and triggered a big second-half comeback as California University rallied to defeat Clarion 79-74 in a PSAC West Division game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

Clarion (3-11, 5-13) finished the first half with a flurry and took a nine-point lead into halftime. The Golden Eagles stretched their advantage to 15 points (60-45) with 10 minutes remaining. That’s when Cal (7-7, 8-10) began its charge. The Vulcans outscored Clarion 20-2 over the next six minutes.

Lowe scored nine points during the rally, and Tynell Fortune gave the Vulcans a 63-62 lead with a three-pointer at the 5:08 mark.

The Vulcans used some excellent free-throw shooting to protect their lead, making 16 of 19 on the night. Fortune, who scored 16 points, was 8-for-8 at the line.

Cal’s Quentin Harding had 15 points, including four early in the second-half spurt.

Calvin Edwards led Clarion with 19 points and Mike Kromka had 18.

Women’s result

California 69, Clarion 44: Stephanie Michael and Chelsea McKnight combined for 34 points and made 10 of California’s 11 three-point field goals as the Vulcans pulled away in the second half and defeated Clarion 69-44 at the Convocation Center.

California (9-5 PSAC West, 13-5 overall) was locked in a tie game at halftime. But Michael made one of her six three-pointers, triggering a 13-4 spurt that enabled Cal to open a 44-33 lead. The Vulcans later had a 14-0 run over a four-minute stretch that gave Cal a 59-35 lead.

The Vulcans held Clarion (5-9, 9-11) to 19 second-half points.

Michael finished with a game-high 18 points. McKnight followed with 16 points and made four three-pointers. Ashley Hines had 10 points.
