Blacharczyk to Seton Hill
Brent Blacharczyk, a senior linebacker for the McGuffey football team, has committed to play football next season at NCAA Division II Seton Hill University in Greensburg.
Blacharczyk was the Highlanders’ leading tackler this past season and was a second team All-Century Conference pick, helping McGuffey to a 5-5 record.
The 6-1, 215-pound Blacharczyk chose Seton Hill over IUP, Gannon, Clarion and Alderson-Broaddus.
Sale of Coyotes falls through
A league official has told the Associated Press that the prospective owner of the Phoenix Coyotes is unable to complete his purchase of the team before a lease agreement deal with the City of Glendale expires.
Greg Jamison will issue a statement saying he can’t meet the deadline, but still hopes to buy the team, the official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the situation.
Jamison had until midnight Thursday to complete his purchase of the Coyotes from the NHL under terms of a 20-year, $308 million lease agreement with Glendale for Jobing.com Arena.
New Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers has said he will not extend the lease deal, opening up the possibility of other potential bidders to compete with Jamison to buy the team.
Indians sign Capps
The Indians have signed free-agent reliever Matt Capps to a minor league contract.
Capps’ deal, announced Thursday, includes a non-roster invitation to spring training. The 29-year-old right-hander has 138 career saves in 444 appearances for Pittsburgh, Washington and Minnesota. He opened last season closing for the Twins and had 14 saves in his first 15 chances, but was slowed by shoulder inflammation and pitched just four innings after June 15.
The Twins declined their $6 million option on Capps for 2013, instead paying him a $250,000 buyout.
Capps was the winning pitcher for the National League in the 2010 All-Star game. That season, he had a career-high 42 saves and a 2.47 ERA in 74 games for the Nationals and Twins.
He has recorded at least 14 saves in each of the past six seasons.
