Girls basketball: West Greene upsets California
West Greene got double-doubles by sisters Madison and Alyssa Raber to help the Pioneers upend California, 49-37, in a Section 3-A game.
Madison Raber had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Alyssa Raber tossed in 13 points and had 12 rebounds for the Pioneers (3-5, 11-8), who outscored California (4-4, 13-6) in each of the four quarters. Emily Courtwright had six points and 10 rebounds.
West Greene needs a win over Jefferson-Morgan Feb. 8 to earn a spot in the WPIAL playoffs.
Courtnee McMasters scored a game-high 21 points for the Trojans and Natalie Baron added 10.
Jefferson-Morgan 49, Mapletown 8: Katie Shaffer had 17 points and Ashley Faddis added 14 as Jefferson-Morgan shut down Mapletown, 49-8, in a Section 3-A game.
The win helped the Rockets (3-5, 7-11) keep pace with West Greene, tied for fourth place in the section standings.
Mapletown falls to 0-8, 0-16.
Monessen 49, Winchester-Thurston 47: Mariah Ward put back a missed shot with two seconds to play to give Monessen a thrilling 49-47 victory over Winchester-Thurston in a Section 4-A game.
Ward led the Greyhounds (3-4, 5-11) with 19 points and Chelsea Szakal added 15.
Lexi Longero paced Winchester-Thurston (5-3, 10-7) with 16 points and Brytany Humphies added 15.
Washington 42, SS Beaver 36: Washington jumped to a 20-13 halftime and made that stand in the second half of a 42-36 victory over South Side Beaver in a Section 5-AA game.
Taylor Ellis and Tajah Gordon each scored 11 points for the Prexies (7-3, 11-8).
Cheyenne Winkle led the Rams (5-6, 7-12) with 14 points.
Steel Valley 44, Fort Cherry 36: Ce Ce Dixon had 16 points as Steel Valley rallied to beat Fort Cherry, 44-36, in a Section 4-AA game.
Cayley Labishak added 10 points for Steel Valley (7-3, 13-6), which trailed 25-19 at the half.
Jenna Lucas had 18 points, while Rachel Bellhy had 11 for Fort Cherry (4-6, 7-9.
West Mifflin 64, Waynesburg 25: West Mifflin outscored Waynesburg 25-0 in the third quarter on the way to a 64-25 victory in a Section 4-AAA game.
Paige Flore had 18 points, Taylor Thomas 14 and Alyssa Cairns 12 for WM (7-4, 8-11).
Lyndsey Huhn tossed in nine points and Michele Cesa added six for the Raiders (0-10, 3-15).
Ringgold 54, Brownsville 19: Ringgold built a 32-4 halftime lead and cruised to a 54-19 victory over Brownsville in a Section 4-AAA game.
Kara Foster led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points for the Rams (6-5, 9-9).
Brownsville fell to 5-13, including 1-9 in the section.
South Fayette 55, Moon 44: Kristen Hardt and Lauren Crites scored 10 points each as South Fayette won a critical 5-AAA game, 55-44, over Moon.
The win solidifies South Fayette’s playoff position, improving the Lions to 6-4 in section and 10-6 overall.
Amirah Moore had 16 points and Abby Unis 14 for Moon (4-6, 9-11).
Upper St. Clair 61, Canon-McMillan 35: Mandy Serio had 20 points to lead Upper St. Clair to a 61-35 Section 4-AAAA win over Canon-McMillan.
Rachel Mazzie added 12 points, while Jordan Serio had 11, for USC (4-6, 9-10).
Brittany Hutchinson had 11 points, and Olivia Lorusso scored 10 for Canon-McMillan (2-9, 8-11).
Baldwin 66, Peters Township 44: Mandy Johnston’s 26 points led Baldwin past Peters Township, 66-44, in Section 4-AAAA.
Kayla Ebert added 11 points for Baldwin (4-6, 9-9).
Madison Kerr had 13 points, Casey Cogley 11 and Bridget Loether 10 for Peters Township (0-10, 3-15).
Belle Vernon 55, Thomas Jefferson 41: Jessica and Kaitlyn Slagus had a double-double and Belle Vernon outscored Thomas Jefferson 13-3 in the final quarter for a 55-41 victor in Section 5-AAA.
Jessica Slagus had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Kaitlyn Slagus had 16 points and 11 rebounds for BV (8-2, 14-4).
Alexas Yanief had 18 points for TJ (4-6, 7-12).
