Duke lures Steelers wide receivers coach

The Steelers are in the market for a new wide receivers coach after Scottie Montgomery left the team to accept a position at Duke University.

The former Duke star is the third Steelers coach to leave since the end of the 2012 season. Offensive line coach Sean Kugler accepted the head coaching position at the University of Texas-El Paso, and special teams coordinator Amos Jones left to take the same position with the Arizona Cardinals.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has filled those positions, hiring Jack Bicknell Jr. as offensive line coach and Danny Smith as special teams coordinator.

According to the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer, Montgomery’s position with the Blue Devils has yet to be determined. But the Blue Devils currently have the positions of associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, passing game coordinator, special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach open on David Cutcliffe’s staff.

Montgomery had been with the Steelers since 2010 when Tomlin lured him away from Duke.

Montgomery, who played from 2000 to 2002 for the Denver Broncos and in 2003 for the Oakland Raiders, had been instrumental in the development of receivers Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.
